How to Run Local AI Agents on an NVIDIA RTX Spark

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a local AI agent on an NVIDIA RTX Spark PC, you need three separate pieces: a local model runtime that exposes an inference endpoint, an agent such as OpenClaw or Hermes Agent, and a policy layer that limits what the agent can do. RTX Spark is a Windows 11 on ARM platform, so install and configure the Windows version of each component for your exact OEM computer—not the Linux first-boot procedure documented for DGX Spark.

Start by identifying the specific RTX Spark laptop or compact desktop, confirming its unified-memory capacity and Windows support, then update Windows and graphics drivers. After you connect the agent to a local model endpoint, test a harmless task and verify that denied files, commands, and network destinations remain denied before allowing the agent to work with real data.

What RTX Spark is—and what it is not

RTX Spark is NVIDIA’s name for a class of Windows 11 on ARM PCs built for local AI workloads. NVIDIA announced systems from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface, and MSI, with Acer and GIGABYTE models to follow. The announcement said systems would arrive in October 2026, but that statement is not a verified inventory of currently shipping configurations. Treat the exact product page for the computer you are considering as the authority for memory, ports, drivers, and availability.

The platform combines a Blackwell RTX GPU and a Grace CPU in a unified-memory design. NVIDIA’s published figures are platform maximums and vendor claims, not independent measurements of every partner computer:

Specification What NVIDIA announces How to interpret it
Unified memory Up to 128 GB The maximum for the platform; an individual OEM system may have less and normally cannot be upgraded to the platform maximum.
AI compute Up to 1 petaflop An announced peak figure, not a guaranteed application throughput or benchmark result for every PC.
GPU 6,144 CUDA cores NVIDIA’s specification for the Blackwell RTX GPU in the RTX Spark superchip.
CPU 20-core Grace CPU Connected to the GPU through NVLink-C2C, according to NVIDIA.
Operating system focus Windows 11 on ARM Use the OEM’s Windows setup, firmware, and driver instructions. Linux DGX Spark instructions are a different path.

Those figures help explain why RTX Spark is attractive for on-device models, but they do not tell you which model sizes, context lengths, quantization formats, or agent tools will work on your particular machine. The installed memory, driver branch, runtime, and agent release determine the practical result.

Understand the local-agent stack before installing anything

A local agent is not the same thing as a local model. The model runtime performs inference; the agent turns the model’s responses into a loop that can read information, call tools, and take actions. A policy or containment layer controls those actions. Keeping these roles separate makes troubleshooting and security decisions much clearer.

1. Model runtime and endpoint

Install a runtime that can load a model on the RTX Spark system and expose an endpoint the agent understands. NVIDIA describes local workflows using Ollama-compatible and OpenAI-compatible interfaces. The exact runtime, model files, GPU backend, and Windows-on-ARM support can change, so use the current instructions for the runtime release you choose and confirm that it recognizes the RTX Spark driver stack.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Agent application

NVIDIA and Microsoft identify OpenClaw and Hermes Agent as options in the Windows agent ecosystem. An agent may be a native Windows application, a service, or a workflow that runs through Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Select the Windows or WSL method documented for the current release; do not assume that a Linux command from a DGX Spark guide works unchanged in PowerShell or on Windows ARM.

3. Policy and containment

NVIDIA describes OpenShell and Microsoft security primitives as policy and containment features for agents. They can help restrict tools, files, processes, and network access, but a policy layer is not a guarantee of safety. Read the effective policy, test a denial, and keep any agent dashboard or control API protected with authentication and local-only binding unless you have a specific reason to expose it.

Choose a topology: one PC or local-network routing

For a first installation, run the model and agent on the same RTX Spark computer. NVIDIA PAIR is optional in that arrangement. PAIR can provide Ollama-compatible and OpenAI-compatible proxy endpoints and route independent requests among eligible computers on your local network, which is useful when several systems have different models or engines.

Approach Best for What stays local Trade-offs
Single-PC inference One user, one RTX Spark, and the simplest troubleshooting path The model files, inference process, prompts, and responses can remain on the RTX Spark PC All requests compete for that computer’s memory and compute; no automatic failover to another machine
PAIR routing Multiple eligible computers on one trusted LAN or several model engines NVIDIA says prompts and responses remain on the local network when the application, model source, engine, and paired computers are all local More configuration, more machines to secure, and behavior depends on current PAIR compatibility and routing support

Use single-PC inference until you can explain which process serves the model, which process runs the agent, and which address and port connect them. Add PAIR only when distributing independent requests solves a real workload or availability problem.

Step-by-step setup on an RTX Spark Windows PC

Step 1: Record the exact hardware and Windows build

  1. Open Settings > System > About and record the manufacturer, model, processor, installed RAM, Windows edition, and OS build.
  2. Open Settings > System > System components if your Windows release provides that page, and note graphics and platform components. Otherwise, use the OEM support utility or Device Manager to identify the display adapter and driver version.
  3. Write down whether you plan to run the agent natively in Windows or through WSL. Keep the model files and agent configuration in a location with enough free space and a backup plan.
  4. Check the OEM product page for the exact unified-memory configuration, firmware notes, Windows-on-ARM support, and recovery instructions. “RTX Spark” identifies the platform family; it does not identify one fixed memory or port configuration.

Do not use a DGX Spark first-boot guide for this step. DGX Spark is a separate Linux product with its own operating system and setup path.

Step 2: Bring Windows, firmware, and drivers up to date

  1. Install pending updates through Settings > Windows Update, restart, and repeat until Windows reports that no further updates are available.
  2. Install firmware and platform updates from the exact OEM support page. Avoid mixing a driver package intended for another RTX Spark partner model.
  3. Install the NVIDIA graphics driver recommended for your Windows build and hardware. Record the driver version so you can correlate later model-runtime errors with a change.
  4. Restart again, then confirm in Device Manager that the display adapter has no warning icon. If the OEM supplies a hardware diagnostics tool, run its memory and graphics checks before installing an agent.

Windows-on-ARM compatibility can involve native ARM software, x64 emulation, and components that require a specific driver. A runtime that works on a conventional x64 gaming PC may not have identical support on RTX Spark, so verify architecture support in the runtime’s current documentation.

Step 3: Decide where model files and secrets will live

  • Use a dedicated directory for model files rather than mixing them with personal documents or the agent’s writable workspace.
  • Keep API keys, service credentials, and refresh tokens outside prompts and outside folders the agent can browse. Use Windows Credential Manager or the secret-storage mechanism documented by the agent.
  • Plan for model downloads to consume substantial disk space and network bandwidth. A 128 GB unified-memory maximum does not imply unlimited storage or that every model can be loaded at once.
  • Back up the agent’s configuration and policy files, but do not back up secrets in an unencrypted archive.

Step 4: Install and validate the model runtime

  1. Choose a runtime with a current Windows or WSL installation method that explicitly supports your RTX Spark configuration.
  2. Install the runtime using its current official procedure. If it offers both native Windows and WSL modes, choose one and keep the model path and service-management method consistent.
  3. Download a model supported by that runtime and license. Start with a size and quantization that the runtime lists as compatible with your available memory; do not infer support from the platform’s 128 GB maximum alone.
  4. Start the local inference service and verify that it responds to a simple prompt using the runtime’s own client or status page.
  5. Record the endpoint type—Ollama-compatible or OpenAI-compatible, for example—the listening address, port, model identifier, and whether authentication is enabled.

Bind the service to the local machine by default. A service listening on every network interface can be reached by other devices and increases the consequences of a misconfigured firewall or agent.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Step 5: Install OpenClaw or Hermes Agent

  1. Read the current Windows installation notes for the agent you selected. Confirm whether the release is native Windows, WSL-based, or dependent on another host process.
  2. Install only the components required for the agent’s model connector and tools. Avoid granting administrator rights unless the documented feature genuinely requires them.
  3. Open the agent’s model settings and select the connector that matches your runtime. Enter the local endpoint and the exact model identifier reported by the runtime.
  4. Save the configuration, restart the agent if requested, and send a short prompt that does not contain private data.
  5. Check the agent log for a successful model response. An authentication error usually means the endpoint expects a key; a connection-refused error usually means the runtime is stopped, listening on another address, or blocked by a firewall; a model-not-found error usually means the identifier does not match the loaded model.

NVIDIA’s OpenClaw material describes both native Windows and WSL approaches. Hardware-tagged examples can be specific to DGX Spark, so treat the Windows workflow as general guidance and verify each command and compatibility note against the current OpenClaw release for RTX Spark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 6: Add policy boundaries before enabling tools

Before the agent can read files, execute commands, or call network services, write down the smallest permission set needed for the task. Then implement and test it in the agent’s policy or containment controls.

  • Files: allow a dedicated working directory first. Deny personal folders, browser profiles, password stores, SSH keys, and system directories unless a narrowly defined task requires a specific file.
  • Processes and commands: begin with read-only diagnostics. Require confirmation for package installation, deletion, registry changes, service control, and commands that can alter many files.
  • Network: allow only the model endpoint and required services. Keep the dashboard and control API on localhost or the trusted LAN, and create explicit firewall rules rather than disabling the firewall.
  • Credentials: never paste secrets into a prompt. Use scoped credentials and revoke them when a test is complete.
  • Human approval: require an approval step for sending messages, publishing content, making purchases, changing cloud resources, or running code fetched from the internet.

OpenShell and Windows security primitives are intended to help enforce boundaries, but the effective result depends on your configuration and the agent’s implementation. A tool that can escape its intended directory, inherit a powerful token, or reach an unfiltered network can still cause damage even when the model itself runs locally.

Step 7: Run a controlled acceptance test

  1. Ask the model a factual question that does not require tools. Confirm that the response comes from the local endpoint and that the log identifies the expected model.
  2. Give the agent a harmless task in its dedicated workspace, such as creating a small text file with a known name.
  3. Ask it to read a file outside the workspace. The correct result is a policy denial, not a successful read.
  4. Ask it to propose—but not execute—a benign command. Confirm that execution requires the approval mechanism you selected.
  5. Test an outbound request to a destination that should be blocked. Confirm that the firewall or policy records the denial.
  6. Review logs for prompts, tool calls, errors, and network destinations. Remove test data and rotate any temporary credentials.

No general benchmark can prove that every RTX Spark configuration will deliver a particular token rate, context length, or model size. Measure your own workload only after the safety test passes, and record the model, quantization, runtime, driver, Windows build, and concurrent tasks alongside any result.

RTX Spark versus DGX Spark: do not mix the procedures

Privacy and network exposure: what “local” really means

When the model and agent run on the RTX Spark computer, prompts and responses can remain on that machine, but the agent may still read local files, execute programs, or call external services. Local inference protects data from a remote model provider only when the complete workflow is local. A plugin, browser tool, telemetry component, cloud connector, or remote model fallback can send data elsewhere.

PAIR extends the definition of local across a network. NVIDIA says prompts and responses remain on the local network when the application, model source, engine, and paired computers are all local. That condition matters: if any component uses a cloud endpoint, the request is no longer entirely local. Segment paired computers on a trusted network, authenticate their control interfaces, and inventory which models and tools each computer exposes.

Review the agent’s logs and Windows firewall rules after updates. A software update can change the listening address, add a service, or broaden permissions. Treat every new tool as a new trust decision rather than assuming that the model’s location makes the tool safe.

Troubleshooting common failures

The runtime cannot see the GPU

  • Confirm that Windows and the OEM firmware are current and that Device Manager shows the RTX adapter without an error.
  • Check that the installed runtime build supports Windows on ARM and the current NVIDIA driver.
  • Restart the runtime after a driver update; some services detect hardware only at startup.
  • If the runtime still falls back to CPU, capture its version, driver version, architecture, and startup log before changing multiple settings.

The agent cannot connect to the endpoint

  • Verify that the model service is running and that the endpoint address and port match the runtime’s status output.
  • Test from the same computer first. A local connection failure is not fixed by opening the service to the network.
  • Check Windows Firewall for a narrowly scoped rule and confirm whether the runtime requires authentication.
  • Make sure the agent’s connector type matches the endpoint: an OpenAI-compatible client cannot automatically use every Ollama-specific path, and vice versa.

The model loads but runs out of memory

  • Check the model’s documented memory requirement, quantization, context setting, and any concurrent processes.
  • Close other GPU-accelerated applications and reduce context or batch settings only within the runtime’s supported limits.
  • Try a smaller or more aggressively quantized model rather than assuming the platform maximum applies to your OEM configuration.
  • Record whether the failure occurs during model load or during a long context; the remedies can differ.

The agent performs an action that should be blocked

  • Stop the agent and revoke any credentials it may have accessed.
  • Inspect the effective policy, not just the policy file you intended to use. A broader inherited rule or administrator token may be active.
  • Move the agent to a fresh dedicated workspace, remove unnecessary tools, and repeat the denial test.
  • Do not treat a successful block in one interface as proof that every plugin or alternate execution path is restricted.

Maintenance checklist

  • After Windows, driver, runtime, or agent updates, repeat the harmless read, write, command-approval, and blocked-network tests.
  • Keep a version record for Windows, firmware, NVIDIA driver, model runtime, model identifier, agent, and policy layer.
  • Review listening ports and firewall rules monthly and after installing a new connector.
  • Remove unused models, plugins, paired computers, and credentials.
  • Back up policy and configuration files securely, then verify that a restore does not reintroduce old secrets or broader permissions.
  • Recheck the exact OEM product page before relying on a published memory, port, or availability claim; partner configurations can differ even when both carry the RTX Spark name.

When this setup is a good fit

An RTX Spark local-agent setup is most useful when you need repeatable automation over local files or applications, want model requests to stay on a controlled computer or LAN, and are willing to manage software versions and permissions. It is less suitable when you need a turnkey cloud service, broad third-party integrations with little administration, or guaranteed performance independent of the chosen model and OEM configuration.

The practical decision is not simply whether the PC has enough advertised AI compute. It is whether the exact Windows system supports your chosen runtime, whether the agent’s tools can be constrained to the work you intend, and whether you can verify those constraints after every software change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need NVIDIA PAIR to run an agent on one RTX Spark PC?

No. PAIR is optional for a single-computer setup. You can connect the agent directly to a local Ollama-compatible or OpenAI-compatible endpoint; PAIR is for routing independent requests among eligible computers on a local network.

Can I follow the DGX Spark NemoClaw or first-boot commands on RTX Spark?

No. DGX Spark is a separate Linux system. RTX Spark uses Windows 11 on ARM and requires the OEM’s Windows onboarding plus the current Windows or WSL instructions for the selected agent.

Does local inference mean an agent cannot send data online?

No. The model may run locally while an agent plugin, browser tool, cloud connector, or remote fallback sends data externally. Audit tools, credentials, endpoints, and firewall rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What model size will RTX Spark run?

The available model size depends on the exact OEM memory configuration, quantization, context length, runtime, driver, and other running processes. The announced 128 GB figure is a platform maximum, not a guarantee for every computer or model.

How can I tell whether the agent is really using the local model?

Check the runtime’s local status output and the agent log for the endpoint address and model identifier, then disconnect external connectors and run a harmless test prompt. A successful response alone does not prove that no fallback service was used.
