Give a local AI agent only the files, tools, and actions its task requires. Start with read-only access, avoid Full Disk Access unless the work genuinely needs it, and require your approval before consequential actions. A model running on your Mac does not, by itself, prove that the agent has no network access or that your data cannot leave the computer.
What “local” does—and doesn’t—protect
“Local” describes where a model runs; it does not describe every capability around it. An agent may have separate tools or integrations that can read files, run commands, access websites, or send information over a network. Those capabilities depend on the agent’s design, its settings, and the permissions granted in macOS.

Think of two separate questions: where inference happens, and what the agent is allowed to do. Check both before giving it access to personal or work data. Do not assume that a local model guarantees that prompts, files, or tool results stay on the Mac.

What macOS protections can and can’t do
App Sandbox and file access
Apple’s App Sandbox documentation describes a way for apps to limit access to system resources and user data. Sandboxed apps can request access to files a person selects and to standard folders; the specific permissions and behavior depend on the app. App Sandbox is an operating-system boundary, not an AI-agent policy: it does not decide which tools the agent should use or whether its actions suit your task.

Apple states: “Your app can’t automatically gain full disk access through an entitlement or with code: the person using your app must choose to grant access in System Settings > Privacy & Security.” That permission path is Apple’s documented route for granting Full Disk Access; other file access may use narrower, user-selected permissions.
Full Disk Access
Full Disk Access is a broad permission, not a routine setup step for an agent. Apple’s October 2, 2026 developer announcement warns that it can expose sensitive material including files, mail, messages, and browsing history. Apple also announced additional controls intended to require more explicit user action, but did not specify all implementation details. The interface may therefore vary by macOS version; check the current System Settings before following older instructions.

Gatekeeper and notarization
Gatekeeper checks downloaded software for signals including whether it comes from an identified developer, is notarized, and has been altered. Apple describes notarization as a check for known malware in its platform security guide. A successful check is useful evidence about the download, not a guarantee that the app is harmless, properly scoped, or designed to keep data local.

Define the smallest useful scope
Before opening the agent, name the folders it needs and the operations it must perform. For summarizing documents, for example, the initial scope can be limited to reading the selected documents. Add access to other folders or write operations only when the task requires them.

Grant access narrowly
Prefer selecting particular files or folders, or using standard folder access where the app supports it, over granting Full Disk Access. If a permission prompt asks for broader access than the task appears to need, decline it and see whether a narrower workflow is available. Do not treat a request from the app as proof that the permission is necessary.

Remove tools the task doesn’t need
Disable unused integrations and connected services. If the agent offers separate read and write permissions, keep them separate. Prefer a specific file-read or file-write tool over arbitrary shell access or open-ended execution when the narrower option will do the job. OWASP’s guidance on AI agent security and excessive agency recommends minimizing tool functionality and permissions and enforcing authorization where actions execute, rather than relying on the model to police itself.

Keep approval for consequential actions
Require a person to inspect the proposed action before the agent deletes or overwrites files, changes system or permission settings, sends messages or files externally, or performs another high-impact or hard-to-reverse operation. Review the target and parameters—not just the agent’s explanation—and cancel if they do not match the intended task. OWASP recommends approval and action previews for high-impact actions.

Verify the app before granting access
Check that a downloaded agent comes from the developer you intended and pay attention to macOS security warnings. Gatekeeper and notarization checks can inform that decision, but do not replace reviewing what permissions the app requests or which integrations it enables.

Protect against instructions hidden in content
An agent can encounter text designed to redirect it while reading a website, document, email, repository, or tool output. OWASP calls this prompt injection; it can come directly from user input or indirectly from material the agent retrieves. Treat that material as content to analyze, not as authority to change your instructions, expand access, or take action.
- Keep your task instructions separate from content the agent is asked to inspect.
- Do not approve a new action just because a document or webpage told the agent to request it.
- When the agent proposes a change outside the task’s stated scope, stop and inspect the request before proceeding.
Recheck access when the task changes
Permissions that made sense for one job may be excessive for the next. Before a new task, check which folders, tools, write capabilities, and network-connected integrations are enabled. Remove access that is no longer needed, and do not leave broad permissions in place simply for convenience. The right configuration depends on the agent and macOS version; no general permission checklist can establish that a particular app is sandboxed or that its behavior is safe.
