How to run apps on a round or non-rectangular display without cropped controls

Controls get cut off when a layout assumes a rectangular canvas but the device presents a circle, rounded corners, a notch, or another display cutout. The reliable fix is to design against the device’s actual safe area: keep essential content away from curved or obstructed edges, apply runtime window insets, and make secondary content scrollable. Treat round, rectangular, and cutout displays as different layout constraints rather than shrinking one square layout until it fits.

Why buttons and text are cropped

A conventional Android layout can measure correctly as a rectangle while the physical panel removes pixels from the corners or an edge. On a round watch display, the rectangular window still has corner coordinates, but those corner pixels do not exist on the panel. A button anchored to the top-right or bottom-left of that rectangle can therefore be measured, drawn, and partially hidden.

The same failure appears on irregular panels and phones with a notch or camera cutout. A full-screen window may extend behind system UI or the cutout, while a control remains positioned at a coordinate that is not safe for touch or text. Hard-coded status-bar, navigation-bar, or notch heights are especially fragile because window mode, orientation, and device configuration change those values.

Google Play quality guidance requires layouts, controls, and text to remain inside the physical boundary of both round and rectangular profiles (requirement WO-V16). The guidance also requires large or maximized font settings to avoid overlap and clipping. Android’s Wear layout documentation makes the practical reason explicit: content near the corners can be cropped on round devices, so a square-screen composition is not a reliable round-screen design.

Start with the display’s real safe area

Identify the profile before choosing a layout

Classify the target window as rectangular, round, or irregular/cutout before deciding where controls belong. A round watch screen needs radial clearance at every corner; a rectangular phone with a notch needs a safe inset around the cutout; a conventional rectangle can use more of its corners but still has to account for system bars and edge-to-edge behavior.

Do not infer the safe area from a screenshot or from a fixed device size. Read the window insets at runtime and let the layout respond when the system changes bars, orientation, font scale, or cutout configuration.

Keep the critical path central

Place the primary title, status, confirmation action, and other controls needed to complete the current task inside the display’s safe physical boundary. On a circular screen, a centered column or a vertically stacked arrangement is safer than corner-anchored cards. Reserve the perimeter for nonessential decoration or content that can be reached by scrolling.

Separate essential and secondary content

A small display cannot show an entire desktop-style panel at once. Put the most important state and action near the top of the journey. Move settings, explanations, and less frequent actions below them in a scrollable container. This is not merely a visual compromise: a circular display may expose only part of a long rectangular container, while the remaining content remains usable through scrolling.

Choose a shape-aware implementation

Use separate resources when the composition truly changes

If the round and rectangular versions need different grouping, ordering, or control placement, create separate round and rectangular resources. This gives each profile an intentional composition instead of forcing one set of constraints to serve incompatible geometries. Keep shared strings, colors, and behavior in common resources so the visual variants do not duplicate application logic.

Use one container when only the safe margins change

When the content hierarchy is the same, a shape-aware container can apply the required insets while preserving one layout. The container should receive runtime safe-area values and provide padding or margins to its children. Avoid a single fixed circular mask or a guessed margin: the cutout and system-bar insets can differ across devices and window modes.

Do not anchor important views to corners

Constraint chains that pin a control directly to two corners are the most common source of clipping on a round screen. Constrain important elements to the parent’s center, to a central guideline, or to neighboring content with minimum margins. If a control must sit near an edge, let the inset-aware parent define that edge rather than using a literal coordinate.

Implementation workflow in Android

  1. Identify the display profile. Check whether the target is round, rectangular, or irregular and whether the window can run edge to edge. Include portrait and landscape profiles when the app supports both.
  2. Define the safe boundary. Read WindowInsetsCompat, including getDisplayCutout(), and combine the cutout’s safe insets with system-bar and input-method insets. Treat the largest applicable inset on each side as the minimum margin for critical content.
  3. Build the central composition. Put primary labels, buttons, and touch targets in the safe area. Avoid relying on corner coordinates that are valid only on a rectangle.
  4. Choose the shape strategy. Select separate round and rectangular resources when hierarchy or grouping changes; otherwise use one shape-aware container that consumes runtime insets.
  5. Add vertical scrolling. For a watch-sized or otherwise constrained display, place the main content in a vertical scroll container. Keep the first useful action near the top and allow secondary content to continue below the fold.
  6. Apply insets at runtime. Update padding or margins when the system dispatches new insets. Do not bake in a status-bar height, navigation-bar height, or notch value.
  7. Protect touch targets. Keep fine controls away from a cutout and from the clipped edge of a round panel. Maintain enough empty margin for the device’s actual safe area and for the user’s finger.
  8. Exercise failure states. Test long text, large fonts, dialogs, validation errors, loading states, and every scroll position. A screen that works only in its shortest state is not shape-safe.

Building the scrollable layout

ConstraintLayout inside NestedScrollView

Android’s Wear layout guidance recommends a ConstraintLayout inside a NestedScrollView for vertical containers. The constraint layout keeps relationships stable as the available width changes, while the scroll view gives the user access to content that cannot be displayed simultaneously on a circular panel.

Use a single vertical content flow rather than placing independent panels at all four corners. Give the scroll content a minimum height appropriate to the window, then let it grow for longer text and larger font settings. Keep the primary action in the flow so it moves with its explanatory content instead of being clipped by a fixed overlay.

Inset-aware padding

Apply safe-area padding to the scroll container or its immediate content parent. Applying it once at the correct boundary is preferable to adding unrelated margins to every child, which can create excessive spacing and still fail when the inset changes.

Edge-to-edge and system UI

Edge-to-edge layouts can draw behind status and navigation bars, input methods, and cutouts. That is acceptable only when the obscured region is deliberately treated as outside the interactive safe area. Verify that buttons, labels, dialogs, and error messages are not hidden by system UI in every supported window mode.

Android’s display-cutout behavior also depends on window policy. Windows that are not allowed into a cutout are laid out in the cutout-safe area; fullscreen and landscape modes can letterbox the cutout region. Your layout should respond to the resulting insets instead of assuming that every mode exposes the same usable rectangle.

Design guidance by display type

Display situation Primary risk Practical layout choice What to verify
Round watch display Rectangular corners are physically absent, so corner content can be cropped. Center the critical path, avoid corner anchors, and place the vertical content in a scroll container. Top, bottom, and side margins; every scroll position; large font settings.
Rectangular display System bars, edge-to-edge windows, or an input method can cover controls. Use the rectangular composition but consume runtime system-bar and IME insets. Portrait and landscape, keyboard visibility, dialogs, and transient bars.
Display with a notch or cutout Text or touch targets can occupy the cutout area. Read WindowInsetsCompat.getDisplayCutout() and keep important content in the reported safe region. Cutout bounding boxes, orientation changes, fullscreen policy, and edge-to-edge mode.
Irregular or changing window A fixed margin becomes wrong when the window configuration changes. Use a shape-aware container and recompute insets whenever Android dispatches them. Rotation, resizing, font scale, and any mode that changes system bars.

Typography and touch targets that survive shape changes

Large text is a layout test, not an optional polish pass

Google Play’s quality guidance specifically calls out maximized font settings. A label that fits at the default size can wrap into a button, push a neighboring control into the curve, or extend beyond a cutout-safe edge. Test the largest supported font setting with realistic translations and error messages, not just the shortest label.

Allow text to wrap or scroll rather than forcing a single line into a narrow circular width. Give buttons enough height for two-line labels and let the surrounding column expand. If a dialog becomes taller than the visible circle, make the dialog content scrollable while keeping its action row reachable.

Keep touch interactions away from clipped edges

A visual pixel can be present while the usable touch region is awkwardly close to the bezel or a cutout. Place fine-grained controls such as toggles, small icons, and links inside the safe area. Use larger, clearly separated targets for primary actions and ensure that scrolling does not move an action under a system bar.

Testing matrix for round and non-rectangular screens

  • Profiles: test a round profile, a standard rectangle, and each irregular or cutout profile you claim to support.
  • Orientations: test portrait and landscape wherever the app can enter both; cutout placement and safe insets can change after rotation.
  • Window modes: test edge-to-edge, fullscreen, and ordinary system-bar modes. Confirm that letterboxed cutout behavior does not hide content.
  • Typography: use the largest supported font setting, long localized strings, multiline labels, and accessibility text scaling.
  • States: inspect loading, empty, success, validation error, offline, permission, and confirmation-dialog states. Error text is often longer than the happy path.
  • Interaction: scroll from the top to the bottom, focus every field, open the keyboard where applicable, and activate every button near an edge.
  • Visual boundary: look specifically at corners, curved edges, cutout bounding boxes, and the area under status or navigation bars. A screenshot alone is not enough; exercise the physical touch area on a test device when possible.

A Wear OS smartwatch can serve as a physical test device for round and rectangular profiles, but hardware testing does not replace shape-aware resources, runtime insets, or automated checks on other configurations.

Troubleshooting cropped controls

The control is clipped only on a round screen

Find views constrained to a corner or to the rectangular parent edge. Move the critical control into the central column, add shape-aware side margins, or provide a round-specific resource. If the content is taller than the visible circle, place it in a vertical scroll container rather than reducing text until it becomes unreadable.

The control disappears behind a notch or status bar

Check whether the window is drawing edge to edge and whether the layout consumes system and display-cutout insets. Replace fixed top padding with values from WindowInsetsCompat and getDisplayCutout(). Recheck after rotation and when the input method opens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large fonts cause overlap

Remove fixed heights from text-bearing rows, allow labels to wrap, and let the vertical container grow. Keep the action in normal document flow or make the action area independently reachable. Test the largest font setting again with the longest expected message.

Scrolling works, but the last action is unreachable

Inspect bottom padding after applying navigation-bar and cutout insets. The final control needs enough scroll content below it to clear the system UI and the physical edge. Avoid placing it in a fixed overlay that does not participate in the scroll range.

A single layout looks acceptable but is hard to maintain

Split only the parts that genuinely differ between shapes. Keep shared behavior and resources common, and use an inset-aware container for margins that vary at runtime. This limits duplicated layout code while preserving fidelity where the geometry requires a different composition.

Choosing between separate layouts and one adaptive layout

Decision factor Separate round and rectangular resources One shape-aware layout
Fidelity to each shape Highest when grouping or control order must change. Good when the hierarchy is identical and only safe margins differ.
Duplicated layout code More visual resources to maintain. Less duplication, with shared constraints and behavior.
Font scaling Each profile can reserve its own wrapping and spacing. Requires flexible heights and constraints that tolerate reflow.
Scrolling complexity Can be tuned independently for a watch-sized profile. One scroll model must remain usable across widths and shapes.
Cutout and system-bar handling Both variants still need runtime insets. One inset-aware parent can centralize the calculation.
Testing effort More resources and combinations to validate. Fewer resources, but more adaptive states to exercise.

Choose separate resources when the screen’s information hierarchy changes with the shape. Choose one adaptive layout when the same sequence of content can remain intact after safe-area padding and scrolling are applied. Neither option removes the need to test physical boundaries, system UI, and large text.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Release checklist

  • Every critical label, button, dialog, and error message stays inside the physical display boundary on round and rectangular profiles.
  • Display-cutout data and system-bar insets are read at runtime; no fixed notch or status-bar height controls the layout.
  • Primary actions are central or otherwise inside the reported safe area, not anchored to a potentially clipped corner.
  • Long content is reachable through vertical scrolling, including the final action and any confirmation controls.
  • Large or maximized font settings do not overlap, truncate, or push controls under system UI.
  • Portrait, landscape, edge-to-edge, fullscreen, cutout, keyboard, and every scroll position have been checked where supported.
  • Round-specific and rectangular resources are used when one composition cannot preserve the same hierarchy on both shapes.

Bottom line

Prevent cropped controls by treating the display shape and safe area as first-class layout constraints. Center the essential journey, consume WindowInsetsCompat and display-cutout data at runtime, put overflow in a vertical scroll container, and validate large text, system UI, cutouts, and every supported profile. A rectangular layout scaled down is not a round-screen layout; the geometry must be designed for the screen the user actually holds.
