Yes—you can keep using Android apps while running a Linux environment on the same phone. The most practical no-root method is Termux, an Android terminal app that provides a Linux userspace and installs additional command-line packages through APT. Android remains the phone’s operating system, so this does not replace Android with desktop Linux or make every Linux graphical application compatible.
What “running Android and Linux apps” means
There are two different things people call a “Linux app on Android.” The first is a Linux command-line program packaged for an Android environment. Termux is designed for this use: it runs as an Android app, opens a shell, and provides packages for development, scripting, file work and system utilities.

The second is a conventional desktop Linux application, such as a graphical program built for a desktop distribution. That application may depend on a particular desktop stack, display server, graphics driver, processor architecture or system library. Termux alone does not establish compatibility with those requirements. A full graphical Linux desktop therefore needs separate, app-specific verification rather than a general promise that it will work.

What you need before installing
- An Android phone on a release supported by the current Termux project instructions. The project describes full support for Android 7 and later, while also listing separate package variants for Android 5 and 6; check the current release notes because support and packaging can change.
- Enough free storage for the Termux base installation and the packages you choose.
- A single, trusted distribution source for Termux and every Termux plug-in you install.
- A network connection for downloading the application, package metadata and packages.
- Realistic expectations: command-line software is the established use case; desktop graphical software, hardware acceleration and particular handset compatibility are not guaranteed.
Install Termux without creating a signing conflict
Use the installation instructions in the current official Termux repository. Termux has been distributed through more than one channel, including F-Droid, GitHub releases and a Google Play build. These channels do not use the same signing keys.

Do not install the main Termux app from one source and a plug-in—such as a separate API, widget or task component—from another. The project warns that differently sourced APKs have different signing keys while sharing an Android user ID. Android will treat that as a conflict. If you need to change channels, uninstall the existing Termux app and all of its plug-ins first, then install the complete set from the new source. Uninstalling can remove the old environment, so copy out any files or scripts you need before switching.
Set up the Linux environment inside Termux
- Open Termux after installation. The first screen is an Android terminal. It is not a boot menu and does not replace the Android launcher.
- Let the initial environment finish preparing. Termux starts with a minimal base system. Keep the app open and allow package metadata to be obtained before attempting to install additional software.
- Update package information. Use Termux’s current package-manager instructions to refresh its package indexes. The exact command syntax can change, so use the built-in help or the current official documentation rather than copying an outdated command from an unrelated tutorial.
- Install only the packages you need. Termux uses APT-based package management. Search the current package catalog for the shell tools, programming languages, editors or utilities required by your task, then install them through Termux’s documented package commands.
- Test one small task. Launch the installed program in the terminal, create a test file in Termux’s storage and confirm that the result is what you expect before building a larger workflow.
- Keep Android as your normal app environment. Leave Termux with the Android home gesture or app switcher. Reopen it from the launcher whenever you need the Linux shell.
This process adds a Linux userspace and packages; it does not install a second bootable operating system. Package names, availability and commands can vary with the current Termux release and the phone’s processor architecture.

Android apps and Termux are separate Android applications. Start a command-line job in Termux, switch to an Android app with the recent-apps screen, and return to Termux when needed. The two environments do not merge into one shared desktop: Android apps use Android interfaces and permissions, while Termux programs run in its own app-controlled environment.
A practical arrangement is to keep a long-running command in one Termux session and use Android for messaging, browsing, documents or authentication. Whether a task remains alive while Termux is in the background depends on Android’s power management, the manufacturer’s battery policies and the Android release. Android 12 and later may kill excessive or numerous background processes, so a command that works while Termux is visible is not necessarily a reliable unattended service.

Keeping an important task alive
- Prefer short, restartable jobs when the phone is mobile or battery-constrained.
- Keep Termux in the foreground during a job that must finish promptly.
- Review the phone’s battery-optimization controls for Termux, understanding that manufacturer settings differ.
- Save output frequently so a process terminated by Android does not destroy the work.
- Do not describe a background process as guaranteed: Android’s compatibility and power policies still apply.
What kinds of Linux software are a good fit?
The strongest fit is software that can operate in a terminal and whose dependencies are available in the Termux package repositories. Typical categories include:
- Shell scripts and command-line automation.
- Programming language runtimes, compilers and development utilities offered by the package catalog.
- Text processing, archives, file-management tools and other terminal utilities.
- Network diagnostic or data-processing tools that work within Android’s permitted network and storage access.
- Local services used for development or testing, provided Android allows the process to remain active.
“Available for Linux” is not enough by itself. A desktop binary may target a different processor architecture, expect a desktop display server, require libraries that Termux does not package or assume permissions that Android withholds. Check the package’s Termux availability and its requirements individually.
Why desktop graphical Linux apps are a separate problem
Termux gives you a Linux environment, not an automatic desktop session. A graphical program needs a display path and often a window manager, graphics libraries, input integration and hardware support. Those pieces can be supplied by additional projects in some configurations, but the result is app-, device- and Android-version-specific.
Do not assume that installing a Linux package will produce a usable Android window. Before attempting a graphical application, verify all of the following for that exact program:
- Whether a compatible Android display method is supported.
- Whether the application’s architecture matches the phone.
- Whether its required libraries and graphics features are available.
- How keyboard, touch, audio, camera and file access are handled.
- Whether the Android release and the phone manufacturer permit the required background and hardware behavior.
Without that verification, the defensible expectation is a terminal program rather than a full desktop GUI. A remote desktop connection to another computer is also a different arrangement: it displays software running elsewhere, not a Linux application running locally on the phone.

Do you need root?
No. The standard Termux route is explicitly designed to work without rooting or special setup. You install an Android application, then install packages inside its user-controlled environment.

Rooting or unlocking the bootloader is a separate, advanced device-modification path. The Android Open Source Project describes bootloader unlocking as a way some device owners install another operating system, obtain debugging access or use features unavailable through Android APIs. It can affect warranty terms, erase data, reduce device security and create recovery problems. None of those steps is required for the documented Termux workflow.

Understand Android’s security boundaries
Android is built on the Linux kernel, but an Android app does not receive unrestricted kernel access. Android assigns applications separate user IDs and processes, and the kernel enforces an application sandbox. Termux is subject to that model just like other Android apps.
Android’s compatibility requirements say alternate execution environments must preserve the platform’s security and permission model. They must not let one app access another app’s private sandbox, and they must not grant superuser privileges to applications using the alternate runtime. Consequently:
- Termux cannot legitimately bypass another app’s private data protection.
- A Linux command cannot automatically become root merely because it runs in a terminal.
- Storage, camera, microphone, contacts and network access remain governed by Android permissions and the interfaces exposed to the app.
- Claims that a Linux environment “turns Android into unrestricted Linux” are misleading.
Storage and file access
Keep project files in locations that Termux can access through its Android storage permission and the current Termux storage setup. Android’s scoped-storage rules and the phone manufacturer’s file manager can affect which directories are visible. A file visible in an Android file manager is not automatically readable by every Linux process, and a file created in Termux is not necessarily shown in every Android app without an explicit share or storage-access step.

For important work, use a deliberate arrangement: keep active scripts in the Termux environment, export finished documents through Android’s sharing or file interface, and maintain a separate backup. Avoid treating the Termux private directory as the only copy of irreplaceable data, especially before changing installation sources or uninstalling the app.

“The plug-in will not install.”
Check whether the plug-in came from the same source as the main Termux APK. Different signing keys cannot be mixed. Back up files, uninstall the existing Termux and plug-in APKs, then reinstall the complete set from one channel.
“The package cannot be found.”
Refresh Termux’s package metadata, confirm the package name in the current catalog and check whether the project supports your phone’s architecture and Android release. A package available in a desktop Linux distribution is not necessarily available in Termux.
“The command works, then stops when I switch apps.”
Android may suspend or kill background processes. This is especially relevant on Android 12 and later, where the Termux project warns that excessive or numerous background processes may be terminated. Keep the session visible for critical work, reduce concurrent jobs and save checkpoints.
“A graphical program opens to a blank screen.”
That usually indicates an unverified display or graphics stack rather than a simple missing shell package. Confirm the exact display method, required libraries, processor architecture and Android compatibility for that program before changing system settings.
“I expected root commands to work.”
Termux’s no-root design is intentional. A command that requires superuser privileges cannot be made safe or functional merely by installing it inside Termux. Use Android-supported APIs, or decide whether the risks of a separate rooted device project are justified.
Choosing the right approach

A sensible first project
Start with a small command-line task rather than a full desktop ambition. Install one package that matches your immediate need, create a test directory, run the program while Termux is visible and save the output. Then switch to an Android app and return to inspect whether the process and files remain available. This reveals your phone’s storage permissions, battery behavior and package compatibility without risking a large setup.
Once that works, add packages one at a time and record the commands or package names used. Keeping a short setup note makes it easier to rebuild the environment after a phone reset or a channel change. Update from the same distribution source and check the current Termux repository for changes to Android-version support, release status and known limitations.

Install Termux from one current, consistent source to run Linux command-line software alongside ordinary Android apps, and you do not need root. Android’s sandbox, permissions, processor architecture and background-process rules continue to govern the result. Treat full Linux desktop applications, graphics acceleration and long-running background services as separate compatibility projects—not automatic features of running Termux.
