For a sequence of prerecorded coaching classes, add OBS’s VLC Video Source, load the approved video files in the intended order, and connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Keep shuffle off for a planned class sequence; turn on playlist looping only if the program should repeat. Use OBS’s regular Media Source for a single video instead.
Before you build the stream
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Its general live setup guidance says streamers must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before scheduling the class stream. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.

Get authorization for every part of the recording
Before broadcasting, obtain authorization appropriate to the recordings and your location. Check that permission covers the class recordings, instructors, slides, music, and any other included material. Having a copy of a recording does not, by itself, establish permission to rebroadcast it; requirements depend on the specific rights and jurisdiction.
Recommended Free Tools
Prepare and check the files
- Put the approved class videos in a clearly named folder and decide the precise playback order.
- Play every file locally to confirm it opens and its audio is audible.
- Write a run sheet for the opening, class sequence, any breaks, and the ending.
Choose the right OBS source
| OBS source | Best for | Playback controls and prerequisites |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source | A playlist of multiple local video files. | Supports playlist loop and shuffle controls. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| Media Source | One video file at a time, such as a single class recording, title card, or break screen. | Supports loop and restart controls. OBS documents it for Windows, macOS, and Linux. |
OBS describes VLC Video Source as playlist-capable: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” See the OBS Media Sources documentation and OBS Sources Guide.

Build the playlist and scenes
Install VLC and add the playlist
- Install VLC before opening the VLC Video Source settings. Match its architecture to OBS: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS.
- In OBS, create or select a scene for the class playlist. In the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Add the class files to the playlist in the order on your run sheet. Verify that the list starts with the intended first class.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a planned curriculum sequence. Enable Loop Playlist only if the classes should start again from the beginning after the last file.
- Check the VLC source’s visibility behavior and test what happens when the scene is hidden and shown again; choose the behavior that fits your planned transitions.
Create opening, class, and ending scenes
Use separate scenes for the opening or title card, the VLC playlist, and the ending or holding screen. This makes it easier to keep the first class hidden until the scheduled start and to avoid leaving a finished class on screen. A straightforward Fade or Cut transition is sufficient. OBS scenes can combine sources and use transitions such as these; see the OBS Sources Guide.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling ahead can give viewers a watch page to find in advance.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open its stream settings, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream credentials. If the connection form asks for the server, use YouTube’s stream URL; enter the key in the stream-key field.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and ingest settings for your connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Do not choose a bitrate without checking that your available upload capacity can sustain it.
For current connection and encoder setup instructions, see YouTube: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Test the full program, then start the event
- Start the encoder connection in advance and wait for the stream to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm the watch page or event is accessible to the intended audience and that the preview shows the correct scene.
- Play through the playlist far enough to check that one class ends and the next begins as expected. Verify opening and ending scene changes, audio levels, and any planned breaks.
- Before making the event public, check the preview and stream health. During the broadcast, monitor both audio and video quality. YouTube’s guidance says to “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.
Keep the upload connection stable
The computer sends the encoder feed continuously, so the internet connection needs reliable upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate, with headroom for variation. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream and advises leaving bandwidth headroom. If Wi-Fi proves unstable, Ethernet is an option when the computer and router support wired networking; it is not a mandatory upgrade. See YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing | VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and confirm that 64-bit OBS is paired with 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS. |
| Playlist order is unexpected | Shuffle is enabled or files were added in a different order than planned. | Disable Shuffle Playlist and compare the source list with the run sheet. |
| The sequence stops at the last class | Loop Playlist is disabled. | Enable looping only if you want the program to repeat; otherwise, plan for the ending scene. |
| A class video has no audible sound | The file’s audio may be missing or the source may not be producing audible output. | Play the file locally, then test it in OBS and check the audio meters and monitoring path before going live. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, or the channel may not be eligible to stream. | Recheck the credentials in Live Control Room and OBS, and verify channel eligibility. Reset an exposed key. |
| Preview buffers or stream health degrades | Upload capacity may be insufficient or the connection may be unstable. | Check the chosen bitrate against sustainable upload capacity, leave headroom, and test a wired connection if Wi-Fi is unreliable. |
| The wrong scene appears at the start | The playlist scene was active before the planned opening, or a transition was not tested. | Use separate opening, playlist, and ending scenes and verify their order in a full rehearsal. |
