You can run an Indian online radio station on YouTube around the clock by sending a continuous audio-and-video program from an encoder to YouTube Live. Before you automate it, confirm the channel is eligible to stream, test the encoder and internet connection, plan for restarts and archives, and—most importantly—secure the rights for every recording and underlying musical work you broadcast.
What you need for a 24/7 YouTube radio station
YouTube receives a live audio/video feed; it does not work like a radio automation system that independently schedules a music library. Your setup must create a program feed and send it to YouTube using an encoder. The feed can be automated music programming, a host-led show, or a combination. A live microphone is optional, not a requirement for a music-only station.

- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- An encoder. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. It names Wirecast as one software example; that is an example, not an endorsement. Choose a workflow that can play or receive your station’s program and produce a continuous live feed.
- Stable upload capacity. The internet connection must sustain the outgoing stream, with additional headroom for fluctuations and any backup stream.
- Program material you are allowed to broadcast. For commercial music, confirm permissions for both the sound recordings and the underlying compositions and lyrics, for the territories and uses involved.
- A monitoring and recovery plan. Someone—or a reliable operating process—must notice a stopped feed, encoder failure, network problem, or YouTube restriction and respond.
A USB microphone is useful only if presenters or interview guests will speak on air. It is not needed for automated music-only programming. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers external audio equipment, but no particular microphone model is established here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to set up and start the YouTube stream
- Check eligibility and activate live streaming in advance. Verify the channel and check for live-stream restrictions. Enable live streaming early enough to allow for YouTube’s stated activation window of up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Choose the program and encoder workflow. Decide whether the station is fully automated, presenter-led, or mixed. Set up the audio and any accompanying video in your chosen software or hardware encoder. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe both types; the right choice depends on your production and operating needs.
- Create a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Create the live stream there and locate the stream URL and stream key provided for the encoder. Configure the encoder with those values as required by its interface. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, share it casually, or show it in a screen recording.
- Use RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as an encrypted transport option. Select it in the encoder if that encoder supports it.
- Check the encoder’s stream settings against YouTube’s current guidance. Match the output to the audio/video program you are actually sending. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval; do not copy a setting from an unrelated stream or assume one bitrate fits every format. The recommendations can change, so check them in YouTube Help when configuring the encoder.
- Preview before going live. Send a test feed, check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and verify the sound and picture on the channel’s watch page. Test the actual playlists, transitions, and audio levels you plan to use—not just a short sample file.
- Start the live broadcast and keep monitoring it. Check encoder status, YouTube stream health, and the public watch page. Confirm that the program continues through track changes, scheduled breaks, and any automated handoffs.
Plan bandwidth, continuity, and restarts
Leave upload headroom
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend upload capacity 20% above the total stream bitrate. Treat that as a recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. If you send both a primary and a backup stream, account for their combined bitrate when estimating required capacity. Test from the actual broadcast location and monitor stream quality while the program is running.

Design for failures, not just a normal day
A 24/7 station needs a response plan for loss of internet, a crashed encoder, a power outage, an expired or incorrect stream key, and a stream that YouTube stops or restricts. Decide who checks the feed, how they will be alerted, what backup connection or equipment is available, and how the broadcast will be restarted. Test the recovery steps before relying on them overnight.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume YouTube will save a longer continuous broadcast as one archive. If you need a replay, plan tested restarts or handoffs under 12 hours and confirm the resulting archives appear as expected. A restart can interrupt the live program, so schedule it at a suitable point and have a clear handoff procedure.

Can you play Bollywood or other commercial music?
Only if you have the rights needed for the specific recordings, works, platform, territories, and uses. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility on the content provider to hold the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights, and to meet applicable territory requirements. YouTube may restrict live-streaming features for copyright strikes or when it detects a live broadcast matching copyrighted content.
Music involves more than one kind of right. IPRS describes rights in the underlying musical and literary works; the sound recording is a separate right. A license from one organization should not be treated as universal permission for every recording, composition, lyric, territory, or use. An IPRS license applies to works it controls and does not, by itself, establish clearance of the sound recording.

What to confirm before putting a song on air
- Who controls the sound recording, and whether you have permission to stream that recording live.
- Who controls the composition and lyrics, and whether the relevant permissions cover your use.
- Whether the permissions cover YouTube, the territories where the stream will be available, continuous radio-style streaming, and any resulting archive or replay.
- Whether the rights holder or licensing organization requires particular reporting, registration, notices, or other conditions.
- Whether each permission remains valid for the entire planned broadcast period.
IPRS lists license categories for uses including internet streaming and radio broadcast and says its licensing concerns works it controls. The applicable arrangement depends on the repertoire and use. No definitive price or blanket package for an individual YouTube radio stream is established here. Contact the relevant rights holders and licensing organizations for current terms, and get written confirmation of what is covered. The Copyright Act, 1957, including Chapters I and VIII, is part of India’s legal framework; this practical checklist is not individualized legal advice.
A YouTube account, a YouTube Music subscription, a radio license, or one collecting-society license should not be assumed to authorize continuous retransmission of commercial songs on YouTube. If you cannot verify the necessary rights for a track, leave it out.

How to troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream. | The channel may not be verified, may have a live-stream restriction, or first-time live activation may still be pending. | Check channel eligibility and restrictions, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation after enabling live streaming. |
| The encoder connects, but YouTube shows no usable preview. | The stream URL or key may be incorrect, the encoder may not be sending a compatible feed, or the stream may not yet have reached Live Control Room. | Recheck the URL and key in both systems, confirm the encoder is actively sending, and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health before going live. |
| The stream keeps buffering or its quality drops. | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable for the total outgoing bitrate. | Measure the connection under broadcast conditions, reduce the outgoing bitrate if appropriate to the format and YouTube’s current recommendations, and leave the recommended 20% headroom above total stream bitrate. Include backup-stream traffic in the total. |
| The stream stops after running for a while. | The encoder, computer, network, or power may have failed, or YouTube may have ended or restricted the broadcast. | Check the encoder and Live Control Room status, restore the feed, and follow the restart plan. Review YouTube’s notices and copyright status if a restriction appears. |
| A long broadcast does not appear as one replay. | YouTube’s automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for a longer continuous session. | Use and test a planned restart or handoff schedule if you need separate archives, then confirm that each expected replay is available. |
| A commercial song triggers a copyright issue. | The stream may lack required permissions, or the rights may not cover the recording, underlying work, territory, live use, or archive. | Review the relevant rights and YouTube notice, remove material you are not cleared to use, and obtain written confirmation from the rights holders or licensing organizations before using it again. |
Can a YouTube radio station earn money?
YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live revenue features. Ads require channel monetization and stream monetization to be enabled, and YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Eligibility and availability depend on the channel and feature. Do not forecast income from a generic estimate: actual results depend on your channel and audience.
