What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To keep an FFmpeg stream online during a scheduled power cut, back up the entire chain—not just the Raspberry Pi. That usually means the Pi, video or capture equipment, router, modem or fiber ONT, and any required network switch. Then configure FFmpeg with the YouTube Live stream URL and key, choose settings the Pi and your measured upload can sustain, and test the complete setup on backup power for the outage duration you need to cover.
There is no universal UPS size or guaranteed runtime: the Pi model, connected equipment, local outage length, and whether the ISP link stays available all matter. The steps below show how to configure the stream and work out what to test.

What must stay working for the stream to remain live?
A live stream needs an unbroken path from the video source to YouTube. Keeping the Pi powered is not enough if the router or internet connection goes down.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Video source: the file on the Pi, or the camera and capture device supplying live video.
- Encoder and network path: the Raspberry Pi, router, modem or fiber ONT, and any switch or PoE equipment the connection requires.
- Internet service: local backup power cannot keep the stream online if the ISP service itself becomes unavailable.
Make a list of every device in the path, note its power requirements, and confirm which devices need backup. Check your local electricity distribution company’s current notices for your area; scheduled cuts, their duration, and ISP continuity vary by locality. Do not assume a particular outage timetable or that mobile tethering will work without testing coverage, upload stability, data allowance, and latency at the site.

Identify the actual workload
Before choosing a command or backup supply, record the Pi model and operating system, the video and audio input, the input format, whether FFmpeg must encode or can copy an existing stream, and the intended resolution and frame rate. A file replay and a live camera capture use different input options; there is no universal capture command without knowing the device.
Use Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation for model-specific setup. Its current recommendations are 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5 and Pi 500; 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400; and 5 V at 2.5 A for the listed Pi 1, 2, 3, and Zero models. These are recommended power-supply ratings, not measurements of a streaming Pi’s consumption or estimates of battery runtime. Raspberry Pi advises: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” Its documentation also notes that voltage is measured at the plug, so cable voltage loss matters, particularly with removable cables.
Verify protocols and encoders in your FFmpeg build
Packaged FFmpeg builds can differ. Check the installed build before relying on a command:
Rank #2
- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
ffmpeg -protocols
ffmpeg -encoders
Confirm that the required input device, video encoder, audio encoder, and RTMP or RTMPS protocol are available. FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing syntax in its protocol documentation, but that does not mean every package includes the same protocol support. If you want RTMPS, verify that the installed build can use the YouTube endpoint you intend to configure.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the live stream and locate its server URL and stream key.
- Use the RTMPS server URL if your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected by TLS/SSL and recommends encrypting the stream; see its RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or shell history. Store credentials in a protected configuration or environment file, or in a service configuration with suitably restricted permissions.
- Use the exact endpoint and key format shown for your stream. Do not copy example credentials literally. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance discusses port 443 for certain SSL errors only where the endpoint and configuration call for it.
Set YouTube-compatible quality that your Pi and upload can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance calls for RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval recommendation, with four seconds as the maximum. H.264 is a documented option, but do not assume a particular Pi can encode every resolution and frame rate smoothly. Test the actual board and workflow.
YouTube’s H.264 recommended video bitrates are:
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a promise that your Indian-site connection can sustain them. Test upload bitrate on the actual connection and leave headroom for variation; choose a lower resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot reliably carry the stream. YouTube’s instruction is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The full settings and bitrate guidance are in YouTube’s encoder help page.

Publish a file with FFmpeg
This illustrative command loops a local file in real time and encodes H.264 video and AAC audio. Adapt the input, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, endpoint, and credential handling to your setup; it is not a universal Raspberry Pi command.

Change them to match the chosen YouTube setting and the sustained upload your connection can carry.-gand-keyint_minexpress the keyframe interval in frames. At 25 fps, 50 frames is two seconds; at 30 fps, use 60 for two seconds. Match the values to your chosen frame rate and validate the output.-c:v libx264uses software encoding. If a hardware H.264 encoder is available in your particular board and FFmpeg workflow, it may reduce CPU use; verify support and sustained performance rather than assuming it.
For a live source, replace the file input with the device-specific input and options, and check that the selected encoder can keep up without overheating or dropping frames. If the input is already encoded in a suitable format, copying it rather than re-encoding may be an option, but only when its video, audio, bitrate, and keyframe behavior meet the stream requirements.
Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Start with an unlisted or otherwise safe test stream, with the actual audio, video, input device, FFmpeg command, and network path.
- Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream health, and monitor dropped frames, upload stability, CPU temperature, and throttling during a sustained run.
- Run the same workload on the intended backup power and time how long the complete powered system lasts. Test the router, modem or ONT, switches, and capture equipment too—not just the Pi.
- Simulate a network interruption and a power transfer if it is safe to do so. Check whether FFmpeg reconnects, whether YouTube accepts the reconnection, and whether the same scheduled event resumes or needs manual attention.
- Test recovery after power returns, including whether the Pi boots, the service starts, the network reconnects, and the stream reaches YouTube again.
Do not assume that a service restart will restore the same YouTube event automatically. If you supervise FFmpeg as a service, configure restart behavior only after the manual command works, avoid rapid restart loops, keep logs bounded, and protect the stream key.

Choose backup power for the whole setup
There is no defensible universal battery capacity or runtime from the information in the title alone. Measure the complete system’s draw under the streaming workload and decide how long it must run, including a reserve. Then check the backup unit’s usable battery energy at that load, regulated output, transfer behavior, temperature limits, recharge time, battery replacement terms, and whether its shutdown/status signaling works with your Pi.
| Backup approach | When it may fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Pi-focused 5 V UPS or HAT | A compact setup where the Pi is the main powered load. | Exact Pi model compatibility, required output voltage and current, connectors, transfer interruption, runtime under the real load, and shutdown signaling. |
| Conventional AC UPS | A setup that also needs power for the router, modem or ONT, and several adapters. | Runtime with every required device connected, output and transfer behavior, suitable adapters, battery condition, and whether the ISP equipment stays online. |
These are categories, not recommendations for particular models. A Pi-only UPS does not protect the internet path. Even a UPS powering every local device cannot guarantee the ISP will keep service available during a cut.

If the outage may outlast the backup battery, stop the stream and shut down while reserve remains. Raspberry Pi documents sudo poweroff as the command-line shutdown action. Do not rely on automatic shutdown integration unless you have verified that the selected UPS can signal the board and that the shutdown behavior works under load.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the stream continue if only the Raspberry Pi has a UPS?
Only if the rest of the required video and internet path also remains powered and connected. A Pi-only backup does not protect the router, modem or ONT, switch, or ISP service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I use a mobile hotspot as backup internet?
Possibly, but test coverage, sustained upload, latency, and data allowance at the actual installation site before relying on it.
Does this FFmpeg setup stream from a camera?
The sample command is for a file. A camera or capture source needs device-specific FFmpeg input options and a test on the exact hardware.
