How to Run an FFmpeg YouTube Loop Stream on an Indian Cloud VPS

You can loop a video to YouTube Live from an Indian cloud VPS with FFmpeg by reading the file at its normal rate, looping the input indefinitely, and sending the encoded output to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The key distinction: -stream_loop -1 repeats the file; it does not reconnect a failed YouTube output. Test the actual file and network, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and configure process supervision separately before leaving a stream unattended.

What you need before you start

  • A Linux VPS in an Indian region with enough disk space for your media, CPU capacity for your chosen encoding method, and outbound transfer capacity for sustained streaming.
  • FFmpeg and ffprobe installed on the VPS.
  • A video you own or are authorized to stream, with compatible audio and video tracks.
  • A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its current RTMPS server URL and stream key.

Do not assume that one VPS size suits every stream. Copying compatible codecs usually uses less CPU than continuously transcoding; the VPS still has to sustain the outgoing bitrate. A nearby region can be convenient for your geography, but the practical test is whether the server can deliver continuously to YouTube at your selected settings.

Choose an Indian VPS region and plan

Two documented India-region examples are DigitalOcean’s Bangalore datacenter (blr1) and Amazon Lightsail in Mumbai (ap-south-1). Their regional availability is not a recommendation of any particular plan. Check the provider’s current plan availability, sustained CPU behavior, outbound transfer allowance and overage, storage, console access, monitoring, support, and total billed cost before choosing.

If you will transcode continuously, compare compute options carefully: AWS advises considering EC2 for workloads such as video encoding that need consistently high CPU performance. No specific plan size or current price can be recommended without testing the workload and checking the provider’s current terms.

Install FFmpeg and inspect your file

  1. Connect to the VPS using the provider’s console or your normal secure SSH method.
  2. Install FFmpeg from a trusted package source for your Linux distribution or an official FFmpeg build. Package names and versions vary by distribution; consult its current documentation rather than running an unverified install script.
  3. Confirm the installation: run ffmpeg -version. Check that the output identifies the installed build.
  4. Inspect the media: run ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4. Review the video and audio streams, codecs, frame rate, dimensions, and duration. Replace the path with your actual uploaded file.
  5. Upload the source file using a secure transfer method and confirm that it arrived intact and fits on the VPS disk.

The examples below use a local MP4 path. Use a file that you are entitled to broadcast; having a copy does not automatically grant live-streaming rights.

Create or select a YouTube Live stream

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the channel that will broadcast.
  2. Create a stream or select the existing stream you intend to use.
  3. Open the stream’s settings and copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube’s ingestion address and key are channel settings; do not assume an old address or key is still the one to use.
  4. Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a tutorial, screenshot, public script, shared configuration file, or support post. Shell history, process listings, and logs can also expose credentials depending on how you launch FFmpeg.

YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its Live Streaming API overview for ingestion concepts.

Choose copy or transcode

Transcode when the source needs conversion

The following is an illustrative H.264/AAC transcode command. It is not a benchmark or a universal configuration. Its 1080p30 video target uses YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation of 5 Mbps for that resolution and frame rate. Choose a resolution and bitrate appropriate to the source and verify that the VPS can sustain the workload.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

Replace the path and placeholder RTMPS destination with the values for your file and YouTube stream. Never publish the real key. This example forces 30 fps and a 60-frame GOP, yielding a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. If your source has different frame characteristics, test the result instead of assuming these values are ideal.

Stream-copy only when the source is compatible

If the source’s codecs, container, timestamps, and audio are suitable for YouTube’s ingest, stream-copy can avoid video re-encoding and reduce CPU use. Verify the output and YouTube stream health before relying on it. A starting shape is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -c copy -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

This does not make an incompatible source compatible, set a target bitrate, or guarantee valid timestamps or keyframe spacing. If YouTube reports an ingest problem, inspect the source with ffprobe and use a tested transcode configuration instead.

What the important FFmpeg options do

  • -re reads a file at its native rate, equivalent to a read rate of 1. It is useful when simulating a live source from a file. Do not apply low read rates to an actual live or capture input; FFmpeg warns this can cause packet loss.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It does not retry or repair a failed output connection.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes video as H.264; -preset veryfast trades compression efficiency for less encoding work. Actual CPU needs depend on the file, frame size, frame rate, and VPS.
  • -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a widely compatible pixel format.
  • -r 30 requests 30 fps in this example; -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set the target video rate, maximum rate, and rate-control buffer. They do not substitute for measuring sustained outbound delivery.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 selects AAC audio, a 128 kbps audio target, 44.1 kHz sampling, and stereo. Confirm that these choices suit the source.
  • -f flv selects the container used for this RTMP(S) output workflow.

Match settings to YouTube’s recommendations

YouTube’s published guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its listed RTMP/RTMPS video codecs include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; listed audio codecs include AAC and MP3. The example command uses H.264 and AAC.

H.264 output target YouTube-published recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps

These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees of viewer quality or performance. Check YouTube’s settings page for current guidance and use a target supported by both your source and sustained VPS/network capacity.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Start with the stream set up in YouTube Live Control Room and run the FFmpeg command in a terminal you can monitor.
  2. Use representative parts of the real video, including its normal movement and audio. Check that picture and sound arrive as expected and that the output does not drift or repeatedly fail at the loop boundary.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. Resolve warnings before making the stream public or leaving it running.
  4. Observe resource and network behavior under the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. A command that starts successfully may still overload a VPS or exceed practical delivery capacity over time.
  5. Only after a successful test, arrange process supervision, safe logging, and alerts for both FFmpeg exits and YouTube stream-health problems.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and reviewing its messages. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings and test guidance.

Looping, reconnecting, and process supervision are separate

An input loop keeps feeding the file while FFmpeg is running; it cannot recover an RTMPS output that has disconnected. For ongoing operation, use a process supervisor or service manager to detect and restart an exited process, log safely, and alert on failures. A restart is not the same as seamless continuity, and reconnecting to YouTube may not preserve one uninterrupted broadcast.

FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer approach that can attempt output recovery after temporary failure; review the FFmpeg all-options reference and test any recovery configuration with your actual ingest. A supervisor restart and FIFO output recovery solve different failure cases. HTTP input reconnect options discussed in the ffplay documentation concern HTTP inputs, not a failed YouTube RTMP(S) output.

Do not place secrets in broadly readable unit files or logs. A protected environment or configuration file can reduce casual exposure, but file permissions, process visibility, and log content still need review. If the stream key is exposed, replace it in YouTube settings and update the VPS configuration.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube never receives the stream Wrong or stale server URL/key, incorrect destination syntax, or outbound connectivity trouble Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, check the destination carefully without sharing the key, and review FFmpeg output and provider network controls.
FFmpeg exits when the file ends The input-loop option is missing or misplaced Confirm -stream_loop -1 appears before the input it applies to, such as -i /path/to/video.mp4.
Loop runs but the stream does not recover after a disconnect Looping is being mistaken for output reconnection Configure and test output recovery or a supervisor restart separately; monitor YouTube after reconnection.
CPU stays high or output stutters during transcoding The VPS cannot sustain the encoding workload at the selected settings Measure under the real workload; lower the output target if suitable, choose a more capable compute option, or test stream-copy if the source is compatible.
YouTube reports an encoder or stream-health warning Codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, audio, or delivery is unsuitable Check the source with ffprobe, compare output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations, and test again while watching stream health.
Loop boundary has a pause, abrupt cut, or audio mismatch The source’s start and end points or timestamps do not join cleanly Inspect the media around its boundaries and test repeated playback before leaving it live; re-encode or edit the source if needed.
Stream stops after a restart or key change The saved destination no longer matches the active YouTube stream Confirm the selected Live Control Room stream and update the protected configuration with its current settings.

Copyright, reused content, and account-specific limits

Only stream material you own or have permission to broadcast. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if its audio or video violates rights or platform rules. Repeating a file does not establish permission or make content original. YouTube account eligibility, live-stream limits, and duration behavior can vary; check the current requirements and notices shown for your channel rather than assuming every account can run every stream indefinitely.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than maintaining an FFmpeg VPS, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
