To run an ambient music radio station on YouTube, use streaming software such as OBS to combine a looping music playlist with a visual scene, then send that audio-and-video feed to YouTube as a live broadcast. Before going public, enable live access, confirm you have the necessary music rights, and test the entire setup with an unlisted stream. A playlist loop by itself does not start a YouTube broadcast or guarantee that it will stay online.
What you need for a YouTube ambient music livestream
The basic setup has three parts: music you are authorized to broadcast, an encoder that plays the music and creates the audio/video feed, and a YouTube live broadcast to receive that feed. OBS Studio is one documented encoder option. Its VLC Video source can play a playlist, while its Media Source can loop one local media file.

- Music: original or commissioned tracks, or third-party recordings covered by permissions for your intended use.
- Encoder and playlist: OBS with a VLC Video source for a playlist, or a Media Source for one file.
- Visual scene: a still image, animation, or other visual you have the right to use.
- YouTube live access: confirm that the channel can go live before scheduling a public launch.
YouTube for Artists says more than 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is platform-wide context, not a forecast of viewership for an ambient music channel.
Enable live streaming and verify your channel
If this is your first livestream, YouTube for Artists advises enabling live streaming by verifying the account at least 24 hours before going live. Check YouTube Studio to confirm live access is available for your channel; do not leave this step until launch day.

YouTube for Artists describes encoder streaming as offering more customization and control than a simple mobile or webcam stream. The Google Live Streaming API documentation also includes a 24/7 feed as a broadcast use case. That describes a supported broadcast model, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service or continuous availability of your encoder, account, or connection.
Clear music rights before you build the broadcast
Confirm that you have permission for both the composition and the sound recording. Check that the grant covers YouTube livestreaming, the territories where you intend to make the broadcast available, monetization if applicable, and use in an archive or replay if you plan to retain one. Keep a copy of the agreement. The rights needed depend on the specific music and license; a label, distributor, publisher, or rights holder can clarify the scope.
YouTube warns that all live streams are scanned for third-party matches. If copyrighted content is identified, YouTube may replace the stream image, interrupt the stream, or terminate it if the content remains. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: if a recording is managed through Content ID, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its allowlist. Set up the looping playlist in OBS
Choose a playlist or a single long file
Use a VLC Video source if you want to manage individual tracks as a playlist. OBS documents a Loop Playlist property for this source, enabled by default. A playlist is easier to revise track by track, but you need to manage its individual items.
If your complete ambient program is already one local media file, add it as a Media Source and use its Loop property. One file has fewer playlist items to maintain; changing the program may mean replacing or editing that file. These are workflow trade-offs, not guarantees about reliability.
Add the media source and visual
- In OBS, create or select the scene for your broadcast.
- Add a VLC Video source and configure its media playlist, or add a Media Source for one local file.
- For a playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled. For one file, enable Loop in the Media Source properties.
- Add your visual as another scene element, then check that it appears as intended alongside the audio source.
- Play the scene and listen for audible gaps, unexpectedly loud transitions, or missing tracks. Confirm that the playlist returns to the beginning after its final item.
OBS’s Media Sources guide lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio formats for Media Source. Playlist format compatibility depends on the selected source and the VLC environment installed on your system; check the formats you actually plan to use. Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and use its live workflow to create or schedule the broadcast.
- Select the encoder option and follow the current Studio prompts to connect your encoder to the broadcast.
- In OBS, configure the connection using the stream-key or connection details provided by YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not show it in the scene, screenshots, or a public post.
- Start the encoder feed and check the live preview and broadcast status in Studio before making the stream public.

YouTube for Artists advises: “Test your live stream in an unlisted stream before your go-live date, especially for high-production or high-investment events.” Set the broadcast to unlisted for this end-to-end check. Verify the actual YouTube output rather than relying only on what OBS shows.
- Listen for clean audio, sensible volume, and smooth transitions between tracks.
- Wait long enough to confirm the playlist reaches its end and loops back.
- Check the visual, including whether it stays present throughout playback.
- Watch the connection and Studio status for interruptions or warnings.
- Review any copyright or Content ID alerts before moving to a public broadcast.
Choose whether to keep an archive
Decide whether you want YouTube to retain the completed livestream. An archive can make the broadcast available for replay, but it also brings replay rights into scope. YouTube says claims on an archived live stream may be made after the stream completes, so check Studio after the broadcast ends and review the archived video for claims.

Keep the broadcast running: OBS at home or a cloud service
With a local OBS setup, the encoder runs on your own computer and depends on that computer and its network connection remaining available. The sources do not establish a universal computer specification or a particular hardware purchase as necessary. Plan how you will monitor the encoder and respond if the computer, connection, or YouTube broadcast stops.

Troubleshoot common problems
- Live access is unavailable: if this is your first broadcast, complete account verification and enable live streaming in advance; YouTube for Artists recommends at least 24 hours.
- The playlist does not play or loop: check that the correct source is active, its media items are valid in the selected VLC environment, and the appropriate Loop Playlist or Loop setting is enabled.
- The YouTube preview has no audio or visual: inspect the OBS scene and media source, then confirm the output in the unlisted end-to-end test before launch.
- The stream is interrupted or the image changes: check YouTube Studio for copyright or Content ID notices. Resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner; if the track is managed through Content ID, request channel allowlisting.
- A claim appears after the broadcast: review the completed archive in Studio. YouTube says archived live-stream claims can occur after the stream completes.
