YouTube’s guidance supports automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; it does not guarantee that one event can remain live indefinitely. This guide shows how to set up and test the FFmpeg path, explains its limits, and offers a cloud alternative if you do not want to keep a computer running.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu 24.04 computer that can stay powered on, connected to the internet and available to run FFmpeg.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s eligibility guidance was accessed October 3, 2026. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- A source, such as a local video file, and enough outbound bandwidth for the stream.
- An FFmpeg installation whose available encoders and protocols support your chosen settings. Ubuntu 24.04 builds can differ; do not assume a particular encoder or secure protocol is present without checking.
There are three separate parts to the setup: YouTube creates the live event and provides its ingest details; FFmpeg reads and encodes the source; Ubuntu and your network must keep the process running and let it reach YouTube.

Enable YouTube Live and get the ingest details
- Verify the channel and confirm it can stream live. YouTube may require up to 24 hours after first enabling live streaming before you can start.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. Follow the current on-screen setup flow.
- Copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use those exact values in FFmpeg rather than an example server address.
- Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Avoid pasting a literal key into a shell command that will be saved in shell history or shown in process listings. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder workflow says starting the encoder creates the watch page. For a scheduled stream, wait until the Live Control Room preview appears, then use its go-live control when appropriate. See YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder and YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings.

Check the FFmpeg build installed on Ubuntu
Before configuring the stream, inspect the FFmpeg that will actually run. The documentation hosted by FFmpeg describes the newest revision and advises users of older releases to consult documentation for their installed version; it does not establish which encoders or protocols are included in every Ubuntu 24.04 package.

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -protocols
ffmpeg -encoders
Check that the output includes the video encoder you intend to use and the protocol needed by the ingest URL. For the example below, that means confirming libx264 and RTMP support. If you plan to use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS connection, confirm that your build and the endpoint support it before choosing the URL scheme. If a capability is missing, use a suitable build or another available encoder and check its documentation; do not assume a specific Ubuntu package has it. FFmpeg documents that build capabilities vary in its command-line documentation and protocol documentation.
Send a video file to YouTube Live
FFmpeg’s documented real-time file-to-RTMP pattern is ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. In that pattern, -re reads the file at its normal playback rate and -f flv selects the output format used by the example. This illustrative command adds common encoding options, but it is not a tested or universal YouTube preset:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k
-maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -pix_fmt yuv420p
-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv
'rtmp://INGEST_SERVER/live/STREAM_KEY'
Replace input.mp4 with your source file and replace the entire sample destination with the exact ingest URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. Do not copy the placeholder URL. Avoid leaving a real key in shell history. The flags shown assume an available libx264 encoder and an RTMP-capable build; check those capabilities first.

Match the output settings to your source and event
YouTube’s typical SDR encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. In the example, -g 60 means a 60-frame GOP: at 30 fps that is a two-second interval. Choose a GOP appropriate to the frame rate you actually send.
The example’s video bitrate is not a recommendation for every resolution or codec. YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30; use its current resolution- and codec-specific table for other combinations, and do not apply H.264 figures to H.265 or AV1. Check your event’s settings and the current table before deployment: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to its servers. Use it only after confirming your FFmpeg build and the supplied ingest endpoint support it. The sample uses RTMP to illustrate the documented command shape, not to override YouTube’s current secure-connection guidance. This guidance covers typical SDR; HDR and HLS have separate requirements.

Looping a video is a separate configuration
The command above sends one file as a real-time input; it does not configure an endless playlist or establish an always-on event. FFmpeg has input-looping options, but the exact syntax must be checked against the installed version’s ffmpeg -h full output or its versioned manual before using it. Do not deploy an unverified loop command as if it were a guaranteed 24/7 setup.
Live cameras, capture devices and network sources need different input options and have different failure modes from a local file. Confirm the input syntax and reconnect behavior for the actual source instead of substituting it blindly into this file-based example.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the stream and leave network headroom
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to the real content. A static test image or silence may not reveal problems that occur with the actual source.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm that both picture and sound are present and that the stream health indicators are acceptable.
- Check your outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% capacity beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate; this is operational headroom, not a guarantee against congestion or outages.
- During the stream, monitor FFmpeg output, the Live Control Room’s stream health and the actual watch page. A process that has not exited is not proof that viewers are receiving usable audio and video.
YouTube advises: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Its streaming tips also warn: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Read YouTube Help: Streaming tips before relying on an unattended connection.

What “always-on” means in practice
Running FFmpeg continuously is a host-operations problem as well as an encoding task. The Ubuntu computer must stay powered on and connected, and somebody needs a way to notice if the process, input, network or YouTube ingest fails. A process supervisor can be part of that design, but it must be configured and monitored; a restart policy alone does not prove that YouTube’s event stayed live, that the same watch page remains active, or that the source resumed cleanly.
Plan how an operator will check FFmpeg logs and process status, and periodically verify the YouTube preview or watch page. A second encoder may reduce the risk of a single machine failure, but it requires a tested failover path and adds another stream’s bitrate load while it is sending. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover for events; it is not a substitute for checking what viewers receive.
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive guidance does not establish that a single event can run forever without intervention. Treat an around-the-clock channel as an operational setup that may require event management and recovery, not as a guarantee supplied by one FFmpeg command. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Common problems and what to check
- FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder: the installed build does not provide the selected encoder. Review
ffmpeg -encoders, then choose an available encoder or install a suitable build after checking its documentation. - Connection fails or YouTube receives no feed: confirm the server URL and key were copied correctly, check that the key belongs to the intended event, and verify the build supports the URL’s protocol. Reset the key if you suspect it was exposed.
- Video appears but has poor or intermittent quality: inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health, compare the outgoing bitrate with YouTube’s table for the chosen codec and resolution, and check whether available upload capacity meets the bitrate plus recommended headroom.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: test the actual source’s audio before deployment and check that FFmpeg is mapping and encoding the intended audio stream. Confirm the resulting sound in YouTube’s preview; the example’s AAC setting cannot correct a source that has no usable audio track.
- The stream stops when the file ends: the shown command sends a file in real time; it does not configure a repeat. Verify looping syntax for the installed FFmpeg version and test the full sequence before leaving it unattended.
- FFmpeg is running but the live page is unavailable: check the Live Control Room and watch page, not only the local process. A local restart may not restore the event or preserve its page; follow YouTube’s event workflow and confirm the preview before asking viewers to return.
