You can broadcast prerecorded gaming ambience as a YouTube live stream by sending the footage through an encoder such as OBS, using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. For a reliable setup, first verify your channel and rights to the gameplay and audio, test the feed privately, then monitor the public stream. YouTube does not promise indefinite uptime or automatic archiving for a 24/7 broadcast, and monetization is not guaranteed.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check current eligibility in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A prerecorded video you have the right to broadcast, including its gameplay, soundtrack, ambient audio, overlays, and any other third-party material.
- A computer capable of running an encoder and a stable internet connection. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required; its guidance does not establish a universal minimum computer specification. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- An encoder such as OBS, plus the stream URL and key created for your event in Live Control Room.
An encoder sends the video feed to YouTube; it does not, by itself, guarantee that a particular file will loop continuously. Plan how the video will repeat, how you will detect interruptions, and what you will do if the encoder or connection stops.

Check game and music rights first
Do not assume that owning a game or recording your own gameplay automatically gives you permission to broadcast or monetize it. Publishers set commercial-use terms for their games, and YouTube requires streamers to have the rights needed for their live content, including music rights. Review the specific publisher’s policy and keep copies of any relevant permissions. YouTube’s livestream terms cover rights responsibilities.

Game footage also does not automatically qualify for monetization. YouTube warns that extended gameplay without sufficient publisher permission or other qualifying value may not be accepted. Its video game and software content guidance says: “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.”

Prepare the footage and event
- Make the creative contribution clear. Use footage and audio you created or are licensed to use. Consider meaningful selection, editing, context, or other original value rather than presenting someone else’s recording or an undifferentiated loop as your own work.
- Check the finished file. Confirm that the image, audio levels, and intended loop point work as expected. Listen for silence, abrupt transitions, or audio that should not be included.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other event details before connecting the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the flow.
- Review stream settings. In Live Control Room, check latency, DVR, scheduled-stream visibility, and auto-start/auto-stop settings against your needs. Protect the stream key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Connect an encoder and test the stream
- Copy the event’s stream URL and key. In Live Control Room, use the connection details for the event you created. Do not publish or share the stream key.
- Configure the encoder. Add the prerecorded footage as the video source and route its audio as intended. YouTube identifies OBS as an HLS-capable encoder; that does not guarantee that every loop setup or default configuration will work. If you choose HLS, follow YouTube’s documented protocol requirements rather than assuming the encoder defaults are compatible. See Set up an HLS stream.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Check the Live Control Room preview for video and audio, then open the watch page on a separate device, including a phone if possible. Verify that playback is stable and that the intended footage and sound are reaching viewers.
- Check recording and archiving separately. Confirm any local recording you intend to keep. Do not treat a successful test as proof that YouTube will archive a day-long stream.
- Go public and monitor. Once the preview and watch page look right, start or switch the event to public as appropriate. Keep an eye on the encoder, connection, and YouTube status rather than assuming an always-on setup will recover or run indefinitely.
Choose between one long stream and shorter sessions
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish automatic archiving for a 24/7 stream, so check current Studio behavior and schedule shorter sessions if a replay matters. No universal session length is prescribed; weigh archive availability against the extra restart and monitoring work.

Understand monetization and reused-content risk
Live availability and monetization approval are separate questions. YouTube’s channel monetization policies, clarified on July 15, 2025 to call repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content,” apply at the channel level. Reused content is assessed separately, also at the channel level. Replaying the same footage with little variation can raise policy concerns, but repetition alone does not establish that a particular channel will pass or fail review. Meaningful original selection, editing, context, or other value can help viewers understand what you contributed; it does not guarantee monetization. Review YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The encoder will not connect: Recheck that you copied the stream URL and key for the correct event. If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key.
- The preview is blank or has no sound: Confirm that the correct video and audio sources are active in the encoder, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public.
- The watch page does not match the preview: Reopen the event’s public or unlisted watch page on another device and allow time for the feed to appear. Do not rely on the encoder’s local preview alone.
- The stream stops unexpectedly: Check the encoder and internet connection, then reconnect using the event’s current credentials. YouTube’s cited guidance does not guarantee automatic recovery or uninterrupted operation for a specific setup.
- You cannot find a replay of a long broadcast: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for a 24/7 session. Use shorter sessions when an archive is important and verify the resulting archive in Studio.
- Monetization is limited or denied: Review both game-publisher permissions and YouTube’s channel-wide policies. Rights to broadcast do not by themselves establish monetization eligibility, and a change to one stream may not resolve a channel-wide review.
