An AI visibility audit measures whether—and how—a business appears in AI-generated search experiences, then turns the evidence into a prioritized plan. The defensible product is a documented baseline and useful next steps, not a promise that a client will be cited, recommended, or rank higher.
What an AI visibility audit measures
An audit brings together two kinds of evidence: platform-reported data, where a search provider makes it available, and repeatable observations of answers to a defined set of prompts. It can show where a business was cited, mentioned, or recommended in the audit’s sample, and identify technical or content issues worth addressing.

Keep the outcome types distinct. An impression in a provider report is not the same as a citation; a brand mention is not necessarily a linked source; and a recommendation is not proof of a ranking or business result. Your report should label what was measured and what was inferred.

Before investigating AI-specific visibility, check whether the client’s priority pages can be crawled and indexed and are eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Google says a page must meet those conditions to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimizations for those features. Indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Google also says its existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant, recommends useful, reliable, people-first content, and warns against scaled content made to manipulate search.
#1 Best Overall
This makes crawlability, indexability, and the actual page content the starting point—not an assumed AI-specific markup fix. Check whether the useful content is available in the rendered page and whether it clearly answers a real user need. Review accuracy, original detail, relevant entities, authorship where appropriate, and supporting evidence.
Use first-party reporting where it exists
Google Search Console
Verify the site in Search Console, inspect priority-page indexing, and review the Generative AI performance report. In its June 3, 2026 announcement, Google described Search reporting for impressions, pages, country, time, and device; Google said the worldwide rollout to websites was complete by August 31, 2026. Treat this as a visibility view, not a complete prompt log or a causal explanation for a change.

Bing Webmaster Tools
Review the AI Performance report for supported Bing experiences. Microsoft’s February 10, 2026 public-preview announcement described total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding-query phrases, URL-level citation activity, and trends. Grounding queries are a sample. Microsoft cautions that aggregate figures do not establish ranking, authority, or a page’s role in an individual answer.

Microsoft announced that Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare preview capabilities would begin a global rollout on June 16, 2026. If you use these features, identify the data as preview data in the report. Do not present citations or related aggregates as a universal ranking system.

Build a repeatable prompt-observation set
For engines or experiences without verified first-party reporting for the measure you need, collect observations consistently. Provider examples demonstrate prompt logs and recorded evidence as possible deliverables, but they do not establish a universal prompt count or prove that every engine has an equivalent dashboard.
Agree on scope with the client
- Define the business, products or services, target geography, and language.
- Select the engines and specific experiences to examine.
- Choose priority customer questions and a realistic competitor set.
- Separate informational prompts from comparison and purchase-intent prompts.
- Keep the prompt set stable between runs if you want to compare changes over time.
A category-specific prompt simulation or competitor benchmark can be useful, but no particular prompt count is established as statistically sufficient. State the sample’s boundaries instead of implying it represents every possible query.
Rank #4
Record each observation
- Prompt, date and time, locale or geography, platform, and experience.
- The full answer and any cited or linked sources.
- Brands named, with outcomes classified as absent, mentioned, cited, or directly recommended.
- A screenshot or export where practical, plus the URL and citation details needed to check the result.
Keep direct prompt observations separate from platform-reported metrics and vendor estimates. Label observations as snapshots tied to their date, locale, and tested experience.

| Method | Evidence it can provide | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console reporting | Google’s reported AI-related Search visibility dimensions, including impressions, pages, country, time, and device. | It is not a complete prompt set and does not, by itself, explain causation or guarantee eligibility or serving. |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Citation totals, cited-page measures, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends; some capabilities are marked preview. | Sampled queries and aggregate citation figures do not establish rank, authority, or an individual page’s role in an answer. |
| Manual prompt sampling | Recorded answers, mentions, citations, recommendations, competitors, and linked sources for the tested prompts and locale. | It is a bounded snapshot, not proof of how an engine behaves outside the sample. |
| Third-party monitoring or audit software | May help organize observations, comparisons, and repeat runs; evaluate its reported coverage and evidence. | Google says third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems. Do not describe vendor estimates as privileged Google telemetry. |
| URL and technical diagnostics | Crawl, indexing, rendering, and page-level evidence relevant to search eligibility and content availability. | Technical checks cannot guarantee that an eligible page will be used in an AI answer. |
When selecting a tool or method, compare data provenance, engine and locale coverage, repeatability, retained evidence, technical depth, interpretation limits, client access requirements, collection time, and cost. Software can support a workflow; it does not turn an observation or estimate into a platform-confirmed fact.
Best Value
Turn findings into evidence-led recommendations
For every finding, connect the evidence to a likely issue and a practical next action. Include the effort involved and how the client can re-measure the result. Mark conclusions as observed or inferred so the client can distinguish a recorded answer from your diagnosis.
- Evidence: identify the report, URL, prompt, date, locale, or answer behind the finding.
- Interpretation: explain what the evidence suggests without claiming more than it establishes.
- Action: name the technical or content change that addresses the identified issue.
- Effort and validation: estimate the work and specify the relevant report, URL check, or repeat observation for follow-up.
If a page does not appear in a small prompt sample, report that it was “not observed in this sample.” That is not proof that the platform never cites it. Avoid promising that a markup trick, wording format, or other “GEO hack” will secure a citation.
Package the audit as a clear service
There is no universal audit scope or established benchmark price in the available service examples. Define what the client is buying before collection begins. A productized scope can specify:
- Prompt count and types, engines and experiences, markets and languages, and competitor count.
- Client access required and the technical checks included.
- How observations will be recorded and what evidence will be retained.
- Deliverables, delivery timing, and a review meeting.
- Whether repeat measurement or implementation support is included or optional.
Possible deliverables include an executive summary, prompt-level appearance log, competitor scorecard, technical and content diagnosis, evidence log, and prioritized 90-day remediation roadmap. These are packaging examples, not an industry standard. Make sure each score or summary has a defined method; do not imply that a proprietary score is an official platform measure.
Present the engagement as a baseline that helps the client decide what to fix and measure next. Follow-on work—such as technical SEO, content improvement, entity consistency, or recurring monitoring—should trace back to an observed issue. Do not guarantee citations, rankings, traffic, or commercial outcomes.
Quick Recap
What to check before delivering
- Does every metric say whether it is first-party reporting, a direct observation, or a vendor estimate?
- Are dates, locale, engine, experience, prompt set, and competitor set documented?
- Are absence, mention, citation, and recommendation reported as different outcomes?
- Are preview features clearly labeled, and are sampled queries described as samples?
- Can the client see the evidence behind each recommendation and understand how to re-measure it?
- Does the report avoid treating eligibility as guaranteed visibility or a short sample as universal behavior?
