You can run a YouTube radio station from OBS over an Indian broadband connection if your channel is eligible for live streaming, your music rights cover the broadcast, and your chosen stream bitrate stays stable on the connection at the place and time you stream. Measure sustained upload rather than relying on the plan’s advertised speed, start with a modest video profile, test with representative audio and motion, and watch both YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame indicators.
What you need before setting up
- A YouTube channel verified for live streaming, with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube Help lists both conditions for encoder streaming (YouTube live streaming tips).
- OBS Studio installed on the computer that will send the stream. OBS sends directly from your computer to the streaming service; OBS does not provide an intermediate streaming server (OBS Project Help Portal).
- A measured, sustained upload connection capable of carrying your selected video and audio bitrate with room for variation.
- Permission to stream the music and other material, including the relevant rights for territories where the live stream is available.
There is no single broadband speed that can be called sufficient for every Indian radio stream. The ISP, location, plan conditions, household use and time of day all matter. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and testing the stream before relying on it (YouTube encoder settings and bitrates).

Set up the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Confirm live access. In YouTube Studio, check that the channel can go live. If live access is unavailable, resolve the channel’s verification or restriction status before configuring OBS.
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream and set its title, visibility and other broadcast details. For the current workflow, follow YouTube’s Manage live stream settings instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and key. YouTube provides these details for the encoder. The stream key authorizes the encoder to send the feed to the broadcast; treat it like a password. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Enter the YouTube connection details in OBS. Select YouTube as the streaming service and connect using the matching OBS workflow, or enter the ingestion details YouTube provides if using a custom connection. OBS labels and connection screens can vary by release, so use the current OBS and YouTube interfaces rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Build the radio scene. Add the audio source that will play the licensed programme and a suitable still image or simple visual. If you use an audio visualizer or animated artwork, include that motion in your test because it can change the encoding load and the connection’s behavior.
Choose a bitrate and video profile your connection can sustain
Use YouTube’s encoder table as a guide to the output bitrate, then compare it with sustained upload measured where the computer will run. The figures below are YouTube Help’s recommended video bitrates, not minimum upload speeds and not a guarantee that a particular Indian connection can sustain them. The page does not display a publication year. For a radio station with a static image, choosing a lower resolution and frame rate is a practical way to reduce bandwidth needs; it is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement.
| Video profile | H.264 recommended video bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations for the listed profiles; the page does not display a publication year. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers H.264, H.265 and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS. Encoder availability depends on OBS, the computer and its hardware or software support. Use a supported encoder that runs reliably, and consult the full YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table if choosing a different resolution, frame rate or codec.

- Do not equate plan speed with stream capacity. Test upload at the actual streaming location and around the times you intend to run the station. Advertised broadband speed alone does not establish sustained upload performance.
- Leave headroom. Do not select a bitrate that merely matches a brief speed-test result. If performance varies or other household traffic competes for upload, reduce the bitrate or resolution and retest.
- Start modestly for a static radio image. A still cover image usually does not need 60 fps. Pick a supported profile that looks acceptable and can be sustained, then test with any actual animation or overlays.
- Use constant bitrate. YouTube lists constant bitrate encoding for its encoder guidance. The selected target should be stable rather than an occasional peak your connection cannot maintain.
Set keyframes and audio
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations list AAC or MP3 audio, with stereo audio at 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz stereo sample rate. Use settings supported by the encoder and confirm the resulting stream in a test broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the current values.
Test the stream before making it a station
- Run a controlled test broadcast, using an appropriate visibility setting for your needs.
- Include the actual audio source and any moving graphics you plan to keep in the radio scene.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room stream health and OBS’s connection status and dropped-frame counters while the test runs.
- If dropped frames increase or OBS shows a yellow or red connection indicator, the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Reduce bitrate or resolution, investigate local network instability, then test again. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide covers connection-related checks.
- Listen to the broadcast from a viewer’s perspective and verify the picture, audio level and synchronization before using the settings for a longer run.
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A test is particularly important when changing the network, encoder, output profile, audio source or animated elements.

Choose latency for a mostly one-way radio stream
For a station that mainly plays music and has little real-time audience interaction, very low latency may offer little benefit. YouTube warns that lower latency can increase buffering for viewers. Favor a stable latency setting unless timely chat interaction is important, and test the choice with your intended audience and connection (Manage live stream settings).

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. If it detects a match, the stream may be interrupted or terminated when the issue is not resolved. A license by itself may not prevent an automated interruption: where licensed material is matched, ask the rights owner about allowlisting the channel through Content ID. YouTube explains live-stream matches and interruptions in Copyright issues with live streams.
- Confirm that the actual license permits live streaming, not merely listening to or downloading the music.
- Check that the rights cover the territories in which the stream will be available.
- Keep records of permissions and any Content ID allowlisting arrangements.
- Do not assume that a music subscription or possession of a track grants broadcast rights.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not connect or YouTube receives no feed | Stream key, stream URL, channel live access, or encoder connection details | Check YouTube Studio’s current stream details, confirm the key was copied correctly and reset it if exposed. Verify that live access is enabled. |
| OBS shows dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator | Upload stability or bitrate too high for sustained conditions | Lower bitrate or resolution, check local connection stability and household contention, then repeat a representative test. |
| Test works but a longer broadcast becomes unstable | Conditions may differ over time or the test may not have represented normal use | Test for a representative duration and at the time and location the stream will run; watch stream health and dropped-frame counters. |
| Viewers buffer despite the stream staying connected | Latency choice or viewer-side playback conditions | Review the latency setting. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase viewer buffering; test a more stable setting if interaction is not time-critical. |
| Music match warning or interruption | Third-party content detection, rights scope or missing allowlisting | Resolve the match with the rights owner, confirm live and territorial permissions, and ask about Content ID allowlisting where relevant. |
What Indian broadband users should budget and verify
There is no source-backed nationwide minimum upload speed, recommended Indian ISP, or universal data allowance for this setup. Check your provider’s own terms for plan limits, and make the bitrate decision from observed sustained upload at the streaming location. No specific computer, router, microphone, Ethernet cable or UPS is established as mandatory for this method; whether extra equipment helps depends on the connection and power conditions where you run it.
