To run a prerecorded podcast as a repeating YouTube Live broadcast, make a scene in OBS, add your files through its VLC Video source, enable playlist looping, connect OBS to a YouTube stream with the stream URL and key, then test the preview and audio before going live. Keep OBS and the computer running for the duration: this is a do-it-yourself setup, not a cloud relay.
Before setting up OBS, check YouTube live access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16 years old. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so check the channel’s Live Control Room before preparing a scheduled broadcast. Prepare the podcast playlist in OBS
Install VLC with the right bitness
OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents the source and its properties.
Add a source and files
- Open OBS and create or select a scene for the radio stream.
- In the Sources box, select + and choose VLC Video Source.
- Name the source, then add the podcast audio or video files to its playlist in the source properties.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want the sequence to restart after its last item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want the item order randomized.
- For a single file that should repeat, OBS’s built-in Media Source can loop one local file; use VLC Video when you need a multi-item playlist or shuffle.
Arrange a static image or other visual in the scene if the podcast is audio-only. A microphone, camera, capture card, or hardware encoder is not required for a prerecorded playlist with a static visual.

Check audio and test the scene
Play the playlist and watch OBS’s audio mixer meters to confirm the intended sound reaches the stream. If you use audio devices, choose them in Settings → Audio. OBS explains the initial setup in its Quick Start Guide.
- Listen to the scene through a short test broadcast or recording; confirm levels are audible and not distorted.
- Check that the video or static image appears as intended and that playlist transitions work.
- Test with representative material, not just a silent opening frame.
Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube if available, or set the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room, check the picture, sound, and stream health, then select Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
Treat the stream key like a password: YouTube describes it as the address and password for the stream, and anyone who gets access may be able to send a feed. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Choose output settings that fit your connection
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval for the encoder workflow. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together; higher output settings require more upload capacity. YouTube’s bitrate table lists H.264 at 1080p30 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection can sustain a stream reliably.

Check your actual upload performance, leave that margin, and monitor stream health rather than selecting the largest resolution by default. A wired connection can be a troubleshooting option if Wi-Fi is unstable, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.

Handle copyright, continuity, and replays deliberately
Clear every part of the broadcast
YouTube’s stream-creation guidance tells creators to ensure stream materials do not infringe others’ content. Confirm you have rights for public livestream rebroadcast of the podcast episodes, music beds, artwork, and any video used. Owning a copy of a recording, or using OBS and VLC, does not itself grant rebroadcast rights.
Plan for the computer and archive
With OBS and VLC, the computer, OBS, media files, and internet connection must remain available while the broadcast runs. Keep the device powered and prevent sleep; monitor playback, audio, and stream health during long sessions. If the PC or connection fails, the stream can stop.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete, automatically available replay. For longer programming, plan a local recording or divide the schedule into sessions, then check how the resulting replays appear on your channel. Troubleshoot common problems
- VLC Video Source is missing or will not play: Install VLC, and make sure its bitness matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS after installation.
- The playlist stops at the last item: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Items play in an unexpected order: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled; turn it off for a fixed sequence.
- OBS meters show no podcast audio: Confirm the correct source and audio device are active, then check Settings → Audio and test playback again.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm the selected server URL and stream key match the stream in Live Control Room, and verify OBS has started sending.
- The stream drops or health is poor: Check the upload connection and reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed to restore headroom; YouTube recommends about 20% upload capacity beyond the selected bitrate.
- The replay is incomplete or absent after a long run: The automatic archive statement covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for a 24/7 run. Use local recording or session-based programming and inspect the resulting replays.
