You can stream from an Ubuntu VPS to YouTube Live by creating a YouTube event, copying its RTMPS address and stream key, making your media available on the server, then running FFmpeg with settings suited to your source and output profile. A headless VPS cannot access a laptop camera or local capture card by itself: upload the file, download it to the server, mount remote storage, or provide another source the VPS can reach.
This guide covers a prerecorded-file workflow. It does not assume a particular VPS provider, server size, or India-to-YouTube network route has been tested.

What you need before starting
- An Ubuntu VPS with enough compute for the chosen encoding method and a stable outbound connection capable of sustaining the audio and video bitrate.
- A video or other source accessible to the VPS. A local laptop camera or capture card is not automatically available to a headless server.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a stream event in YouTube Studio.
- FFmpeg built with the encoder and output protocol your command requires. Build options can vary by Ubuntu release and package, so verify your installation rather than assuming it includes every codec.
- Permission to use the video and audio you plan to stream. Rights, monetization eligibility, and country-specific legal requirements depend on the content and circumstances.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that before a scheduled broadcast.
How to create a YouTube live stream and find its URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and the stream key. Use the values for this event; do not guess an endpoint or reuse a key without checking it.
- If you want RTMPS, copy the RTMPS URL shown in the stream settings. The ordinary RTMP address initially displayed is not a substitute for confirming the secure address.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public script, article, screenshot, or shared log. Supply it through a protected environment or secret mechanism, and avoid exposing it in shell history or process logs where possible.

Prepare the Ubuntu VPS and inspect the source
Make sure FFmpeg has the needed support
Install FFmpeg using a package or build suitable for the Ubuntu release on your VPS. Then check the installed version and available encoders:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
For the example below, verify support for libx264, AAC audio encoding, and RTMPS output. An FFmpeg installation can differ in its build options; if an encoder or protocol is missing, use a build that includes it or adapt the command to an available encoder.
Put the media where the server can read it
Upload the recording, download it to the VPS, or mount/access its remote location reliably. A remote mount or download that stalls can interrupt input even when the VPS-to-YouTube connection is fine.
Inspect the media before choosing output settings. For example:
Rank #2
- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/input.mp4
Check its video dimensions, frame rate, codecs, audio presence, and duration. The example command is for a 1080p30 H.264 output profile; it may need a scale filter, explicit stream mapping, timestamp handling, or different codecs for your actual input.
Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations give the following minimum and recommended video bitrates. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer quality or a special India network requirement.
| Output profile | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |

Recommended Free Tools
- YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and keyframes every two seconds, with no more than four seconds between keyframes.
- Audio guidance includes AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube’s guidance is 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz.
- Higher frame rates or resolution need more outbound capacity and may increase encoding load. A VPS’s CPU performance and network stability depend on provider, workload, and route.
Measure whether the VPS can sustain the selected combined audio and video bitrate over time. The available guidance does not establish a universal vCPU/RAM size or an extra-bandwidth percentage, and an India-region VPS is not automatically a better route to YouTube ingest.

Run FFmpeg and loop a prerecorded video
For a looping file, FFmpeg’s -re paces file input in real time and -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The following is an illustrative 1080p30 H.264 profile using YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation for that profile:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
Set RTMPS_URL and STREAM_KEY to the values copied from the current event, using a secure method appropriate to your environment. Do not paste a real key into a publicly shared command. This command pattern is not tested against every input or FFmpeg build. If the source is not 1080p30, lacks audio, uses incompatible codecs, or needs scaling or mapping, adjust the command rather than assuming these settings fit.
Software encoding with libx264 needs enough CPU to encode in real time. If it falls behind, consider a less demanding preset or an available hardware encoder, but verify the encoder exists and can maintain the intended output profile on your VPS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the preview and stream health before relying on it
- Start FFmpeg and open the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Confirm that the preview shows the expected picture and that audio is present and intelligible.
- Review stream-health messages and compare the reported stream against your chosen bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio setup.
- Test with representative motion and audio before the real broadcast. YouTube Help states, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- When finished, stop FFmpeg and end the event in YouTube Studio as appropriate.
YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics can identify issues including low or high bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, long GOP/keyframe intervals, missing audio or video, and stream starvation. Troubleshoot common FFmpeg-to-YouTube problems
YouTube receives no incoming data
- Confirm FFmpeg is still running and has not exited on an input, encoder, or network error.
- Check that the RTMPS URL and key came from the current event and were not mistyped.
- Verify the VPS can reach the endpoint and that the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS.
RTMPS TLS, SSL, or timeout errors
Confirm the URL uses the rtmps scheme and the server hostname shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes that port 443 may need to be specified; TLS SNI authentication also requires the server hostname. See YouTube Help: use an encoder for live streaming and Google for Developers: RTMPS ingestion.
Stream health is poor or unstable
- Compare actual video bitrate with the selected YouTube profile; a bitrate that is too low or too high can trigger a warning.
- Check the frame rate and keyframe interval. At 30 fps,
-g 60requests a keyframe interval of about two seconds. - Verify audio and video are both present and that encoding is keeping pace with real time.
- Check whether the source file, remote mount, or VPS outbound route is stalling.
The stream stops when the file ends
For an endless prerecorded loop, the input needs -stream_loop -1. A live camera or capture source is a different workflow: the capture device or feed must itself be accessible to the VPS.
The VPS is overloaded or the right server size is unclear
There is no universal vCPU or RAM recommendation that fits every source. The needed capacity depends on source codec and resolution, output profile, software versus hardware encoding, concurrent workloads, and provider performance. Check actual encoding speed and sustained egress under your workload before depending on the server for a long broadcast.
Costs and India-specific considerations
The DIY method involves renting and operating a VPS, with costs and transfer limits determined by the provider and plan. Confirm India-region availability, sustained egress or transfer quotas, CPU/GPU capability, and recovery or monitoring options directly with a provider; no particular VPS price or provider route is established here. YouTube’s encoder settings do not prescribe a separate bitrate table for India.

For an event shorter than 12 hours, YouTube documents automatic archiving; do not assume a 24/7 stream will be archived in full. See YouTube Help: live encoder settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream from uploaded prerecorded videos rather than direct FFmpeg/VPS control, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it runs from the cloud, accepts any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day with no card.
Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and the same features on every plan; only the billing length changes. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
