Add the local video, turn on Loop, connect OBS to YouTube Live, and choose output settings the laptop and your upload connection can sustain. OBS working on a computer does not guarantee it can stream reliably for hours; test the complete setup before relying on it.
Check that your channel can go live
Before configuring OBS, confirm live streaming is available for your YouTube channel. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable access well before the broadcast. YouTube also states that streamers must be at least 16 years old.

Start in YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance and check access in YouTube Studio. If you plan to test publicly, schedule or create the stream in Live Control Room; an unlisted test can help you check the full workflow without making the broadcast public.
Prepare a simple looping scene in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, use the Scenes panel to add a scene for this broadcast. Keep it simple: the video and only the overlays or audio elements you actually need.
- Add the local video. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create or select a source, then browse to the video file stored on the laptop.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, check Loop, then confirm the source. OBS will replay the file when playback reaches the end.
- Check playback and sound. Start the source in the preview, make sure the picture fits the canvas, and confirm audio reaches the OBS audio meters at a sensible level. If you do not need a separate audio source, avoid adding one unnecessarily.
OBS documents MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM among the supported video formats. Its Media Source also has a hardware-decoding option when available; it is off by default. If you enable it, test playback and streaming on this specific laptop rather than assuming it will improve performance.

One video or a playlist
For a single file, Media Source with Loop is the straightforward option. For a playlist, OBS provides a separate VLC Video source with playlist-loop behavior. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; with 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide if a source behaves differently from the labels described here.
Keep the scene light
Video resolution, browser sources, filters and scene complexity all use resources. A high-resolution source scaled down to a smaller canvas can still demand more than a file that already matches the intended output. Remove sources and filters you do not need, and avoid adding animated or browser-based overlays until the basic loop is stable.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream and choose its visibility and other broadcast details.
- In YouTube’s stream setup, obtain the stream key and server information for an encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or the applicable YouTube ingest option, and connect the account or enter the server and key as prompted by the current OBS interface.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your channel. Do not show it in a screen recording or share it in a public message.
- Confirm the OBS preview and audio, then start streaming from OBS. Check Live Control Room to verify that YouTube receives the feed and reports stream health before treating the broadcast as live.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for broadcasts that combine sources such as gameplay, overlays, external audio or video, and other production elements. Labels can change; use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions if the current Studio flow differs.
Choose settings the laptop and connection can sustain
There is no dependable universal “old laptop” preset. The right output depends on the processor, available hardware encoder, cooling, scene, video, power condition and measured upload speed. Start conservatively, test with the real file and scene, and lower resolution or frame rate if OBS or the stream struggles.
YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations
YouTube’s current help table recommends the following H.264 video bitrates. These are recommendations for the listed output formats, not proof that a particular internet connection or laptop can sustain them. Leave upload headroom for network variation and other household traffic.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Run an upload speed test close to where the laptop will stream, then choose an output your connection can deliver consistently. YouTube advises testing beforehand and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Its live encoder settings guidance is the reference for bitrate recommendations; the table may change.
Encoder requirements to check
- Video codec: for RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: a two-second interval is recommended and the interval must not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream through its servers.
In Live Control Room, YouTube detects encoder resolution and frame rate by default. A custom stream key can be used for manual resolution settings. If the options in your OBS or Studio version differ, follow the current YouTube encoder instructions rather than forcing an unrelated preset.

Lower the OBS output resolution and frame rate, then test again. Lower resolution reduces encoder load; fewer frames reduce rendering and encoding work. Also simplify the scene and close unnecessary applications. OBS says compatible hardware does not guarantee that a machine can stream or record reliably; its system-requirements page is dated 2021-08-25, so treat compatibility as a baseline rather than a performance promise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test for a long broadcast and protect the content
- Run the laptop on reliable power, with sleep settings adjusted so the computer does not suspend during the stream. Keep ventilation clear and watch for heat-related slowdowns or shutdowns.
- Use the strongest available internet connection from the intended streaming location. Test the entire chain: the actual video, audio, overlays, OBS output and YouTube reception.
- Let the test run long enough to reveal problems that do not appear in a short preview. Monitor OBS for rendering or encoding issues and Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators.
- Make sure you have the rights to the video and audio. A loop does not make copyrighted material permissible. YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
If the laptop overheats, loses power, sleeps or the connection drops, the stream can stop. The outcome depends on the particular device and network; basic OBS compatibility cannot certify 24/7 operation. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements for channel restrictions and policy details.
When an always-on laptop is the wrong fit
Local OBS is a do-it-yourself approach: the laptop plays the file and sends the stream, so it must remain powered, connected and capable for the duration. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists Gyre as a cloud option for continuous prerecorded YouTube streams without a dedicated PC. Pricing and availability in India are not established here, so check the service directly before choosing it.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, with no re-encode and no quality tiers: one flat price per slot.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account. After that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Other billing lengths are available; UPI and cards work in India, while card checkout is available worldwide.
If avoiding an always-on laptop is worth it for your channel, start your free StreamNeo day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an old laptop run OBS and YouTube Live at the same time?
It can if its hardware, cooling, power and connection sustain the chosen settings, but age alone cannot determine that. Test the intended setup and duration.
Does OBS keep a video looping after it ends?
Yes. Add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop in its properties.
Can I use a playlist instead of one file?
Yes. OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and playlist looping, with VLC installed; use the matching 64-bit VLC installation for 64-bit OBS.
