You can run a YouTube Live encoder on a Google Cloud Compute Engine VM and send it to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. For a 24/7 setup, configure the encoder, arrange boot startup and process supervision, protect the stream key, and monitor reconnects. A startup script alone does not keep a failed encoder running, and neither the VM nor YouTube workflow should be treated as guaranteed interruption-free.
How the VM-to-YouTube setup works
The Compute Engine VM hosts an encoder such as FFmpeg. The encoder reads a media file or another permitted source and sends the resulting stream to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube provides the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room; the VM does not replace YouTube’s live-streaming service.
This guide describes the architecture and configuration decisions, not a tested end-to-end FFmpeg deployment. Exact commands depend on the VM operating system, input format, codecs and whether the media needs to be encoded or can be passed through. Test the complete setup on your chosen machine and media before relying on it continuously.
Set up the YouTube stream and safeguard its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s configuration. Keep the key private: do not put a real key in a public script, repository, screenshot or article example.
- Restrict access to the configuration and secret. Limit who can read or change the files and account credentials used by the encoder.
- Reset a compromised key. YouTube says a channel owner or manager can reset it. Update the encoder with the replacement key before restarting the stream.
Create and size the Compute Engine VM
Create a Linux VM in Compute Engine. Pick its region, machine resources and disk based on the workload and your cost requirements; there is no universally established minimum machine type for every codec, resolution, frame rate and input.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Decide whether the VM must encode
- If the source needs real-time encoding, the VM must have enough CPU capacity for the chosen codec and output settings. Validate this under the actual workload; the sources do not establish a guaranteed machine size.
- If the source is already encoded and your workflow can pass it through or remux it, resource needs may differ from real-time transcoding. Confirm compatibility and test rather than assuming any file can be relayed unchanged.
Account for disk and region
Choose disk capacity for the media and any files or logs your deployment needs. Compute Engine pricing varies by region and resource configuration, so estimate the VM and storage using Google’s pricing calculator for the intended setup rather than relying on a generic monthly figure. Google’s product overview advertises a free tier that includes one e2-micro VM instance, up to 30 GB of standard persistent disk and up to 1 GB of outbound transfer per month. Check current terms and eligible regions; those allowances do not establish that a 24/7 streaming workload or your selected resources are covered.
Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for the codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to send. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS; RTMPS encrypts data through Google’s servers. The encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video options, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into formats for viewers.

Choose a bitrate and keyframe interval
| Output example | YouTube-listed recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a promise of picture quality or a specification for VM size. Bitrate guidance varies with codec, resolution and frame rate; check the current YouTube table for your actual target. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It also advises testing upload bitrate with a speed test and choosing settings reliable for the available connection. In a VM workflow, assess the VM’s encoding capacity and outbound path as well as the target bitrate.
Use the right input and output
Configure the encoder with the actual input—for example, a permitted looped media file—then set the output protocol, YouTube ingest URL and secret stream key. Set the video codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval and audio codec deliberately. Avoid copying a command meant for a different file format or encoder build without checking its options and testing the output.

Make the encoder start and recover
Compute Engine Linux startup scripts can run commands when a VM boots. Google’s documentation defines a startup script as a file containing commands that run when a VM instance boots. Public images include the guest environment needed for metadata startup scripts. This is useful for boot-time setup, but a startup script does not by itself prove that the encoder will restart after an application failure.
- Choose a boot mechanism. Use a Compute Engine startup script or a service manager to launch the encoder after boot.
- Configure supervision. Use a process supervisor or service manager that can detect an encoder exit and restart it according to your needs. Configure sensible restart behavior so a persistent configuration error does not cause an uncontrolled restart loop.
- Keep secrets out of public configuration. Restrict permissions on files or metadata that contain the stream key, and limit account access.
- Capture logs and monitor state. Watch encoder logs, VM health and YouTube Live Control Room for failed connections or stream-health messages.
- Test recovery paths. Verify reconnect behavior after an encoder failure and confirm the service starts after a VM reboot. A reboot test is not a substitute for monitoring the live stream afterward.
Test before leaving it unattended
YouTube advises creators to test before starting a live stream. Send representative audio and motion, check the stream in Live Control Room, and review stream-health messages. Confirm that the stream key and output settings work, the content plays as intended, and your supervisor can recover from an encoder exit. Test what happens after a VM reboot and check that logs give you enough information to diagnose failures.

Google’s VPC pricing page places Compute Engine traffic to YouTube in a no-charge data-transfer category. That does not make the VM or its disk free. Google’s free-tier figures are allowances subject to current eligibility and terms, not evidence that a 24/7 deployment will have no bill. Pricing pages and terms can change, so verify them when estimating.
Do not confuse the VM with the Live Stream API
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate managed service, not the same thing as running an encoder on a Compute Engine VM and sending its output directly to YouTube. The API limits page says its channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than STOPPED or STOPPING. That condition applies to a Live Stream API channel; it does not establish a 24-hour limit for a VM encoder. The available guidance also does not establish an unlimited-duration guarantee for direct VM-to-YouTube streaming. Plan for monitoring, reconnect handling and possible interruptions.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm the correct stream URL and current key are configured, and that the encoder is using the intended RTMP or RTMPS output. | Correct the endpoint or key, then check encoder logs and Live Control Room. Reset a key if it may have been exposed. |
| The stream starts but has poor or unstable health | Compare the output bitrate and format with YouTube’s current settings; check VM encode capacity and the outbound path. | Test with representative motion and audio, then choose settings the VM and connection can sustain. |
| The encoder stops and stays stopped | A boot script runs at VM boot; it does not necessarily restart a process that later exits. | Configure process supervision and inspect logs to identify the underlying failure. |
| The stream does not resume after a VM reboot | Check the startup script or service manager, guest environment, permissions and secret availability. | Fix the boot configuration, reboot in a controlled test and verify the stream in Live Control Room. |
| A bill is higher than expected | Review VM runtime, machine type, region, disk and applicable network charges against the estimate. | Recalculate with the actual configuration and check current Google Cloud pricing and free-tier eligibility. |
