How to Run a vMix YouTube Playlist Stream After Windows Updates and Reboots

To bring a vMix playlist stream back after a Windows update, check three separate things: vMix has reopened the right production, its List input is advancing and looping, and YouTube is receiving a live broadcast. A playlist’s Auto Next and Loop settings handle playback; they do not schedule vMix to launch or guarantee that YouTube reconnects after a reboot. The exact restart behavior depends on your computer, Windows build, vMix version, saved production, and YouTube stream setup, so test the full recovery on your own system.

What can and cannot be automated

vMix List inputs can play a sequence of video and audio files, advance automatically, and loop. vMix describes Playlist and List as options for basic or continuous playback, but it does not support time-of-day scheduling. As vMix puts it, “vMix is primarily designed for live streaming single events and as such does not support time of day scheduling.” vMix Knowledge Base, updated January 17, 2025.

Starting the playlist and starting the YouTube broadcast are separate states. The documented vMix Live Stream Now flow includes pressing Start in vMix; YouTube’s encoder Auto-start and Auto-stop settings are separate controls. The available official instructions do not establish a universal Windows procedure that reliably reopens a specific production, resumes its playlist, and restores the broadcast after an update-triggered reboot.

Prepare the playlist and stream before relying on them

Set up and save the List input

  1. Load the intended media. Create a vMix List input from the video and audio files you want to play, or use an M3U playlist. See the vMix List input guide.
  2. Check playback behavior. Confirm Auto Next is enabled so playback advances through the list, and enable Loop if the list should repeat. Auto Next is enabled by default according to vMix’s guide; verify the setting in your actual production rather than relying on a default.
  3. Save the production. Save the vMix production with the intended inputs and playlist. Then run it long enough to confirm the sequence advances and loops as expected.

Confirm the YouTube stream configuration

  1. Configure the YouTube destination in vMix. In the documented Live Stream Now workflow, create a stream or select an existing event, then press Start in vMix. Follow the vMix YouTube Live Stream Now instructions for that workflow.
  2. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the stream setup and the stream key associated with the event. Treat the key as a credential: do not share or publish it.
  3. Review the selected stream’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings in YouTube. These settings govern whether the encoder can control starting and stopping the broadcast; do not assume they are on or behave identically for every stream. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Test the complete Windows reboot workflow

Do a controlled restart before leaving the stream unattended. Test on the actual computer, Windows build, vMix version, saved production, and YouTube configuration you intend to use. vMix’s startup options documentation describes application options, but it does not establish that a streaming session will automatically resume after reboot. Do not treat a vMix launch-at-startup setting, if used, as proof that playback and YouTube streaming also resume.

  • Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
  1. Save the production and note the expected playlist content and YouTube event.
  2. Restart Windows deliberately, using the same account and network conditions expected after an update.
  3. Check whether vMix opened the intended saved production. Verify that the List input is advancing and looping.
  4. Check vMix’s stream status and the YouTube Live Control Room preview. If the event is not live, use the documented vMix start flow and check the applicable YouTube Auto-start behavior.
  5. Open the public watch page. Verify that it shows the current playlist content and that sound is audible, then continue monitoring picture and audio quality.

Record what happened at each step. A successful Windows login proves only that Windows started; it does not prove that the production, playlist, encoder connection, live event, or public playback recovered.

What to check after an update reboot

  • Windows and network: Wait for the update and restart cycle to finish. Confirm the expected user session is available and the computer has network access.
  • vMix production: Confirm the intended production is open, not merely that the vMix application launched.
  • Playlist: Check that the List input is playing the expected item, advances to the next item, and loops if required.
  • Encoder and event: Check vMix’s stream status and the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room. If it is not live, use the appropriate start flow.
  • Public playback: Check the public watch page for current picture and audible sound. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom over the stream bitrate; see its live streaming tips.

Troubleshoot the failure by state

What you see What to check Next action
Windows is running, but vMix is not open. Whether the expected user session and production-launch behavior occurred. Open vMix and load the intended saved production. Test separately whether your chosen Windows startup approach works after a full reboot; the cited startup guidance does not guarantee session recovery.
vMix is open, but the wrong production or no playlist is loaded. The production currently open and its List input contents. Load the saved production that contains the intended list, then verify playback and save any corrected setup.
The List input is stopped or does not advance. Auto Next, Loop, and the actual loaded list. Enable the required playback options, confirm the media entries, and test the list again.
The playlist plays, but YouTube is not live. vMix stream status, the selected YouTube event, stream setup, and Auto-start behavior. Use the vMix Start action for the selected stream or event as applicable, then check the Live Control Room preview.
YouTube shows a preview, but viewers do not see working playback. The public watch page, picture, sound, and stream quality. Check the public page directly and monitor audio and video; a control-room preview alone does not confirm the viewer-side result.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube without relying on a home computer to recover after Windows updates, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer can be off. It does not stream from a camera or to platforms other than YouTube.
