If PowerShell blocks a downloaded script under RemoteSigned, review the file first, then use Unblock-File on that script. This removes its downloaded-file block without changing the effective execution policy. Check the policy and its scopes before deciding what to do, especially on a managed work or school PC.
Check which PowerShell edition and policy are in use
These steps apply to Windows PowerShell. Windows PowerShell 5.1 and PowerShell 7 store execution-policy settings separately, so check the policy in the edition where you intend to run the script. Microsoft describes execution policy as a way to control conditions for running scripts and loading configuration files, not as a security boundary: it is “defense in depth.” Microsoft’s about_Execution_Policies documentation also notes that signed scripts can still be malicious.
In the PowerShell window you plan to use, run:
Get-ExecutionPolicy
Get-ExecutionPolicy -List
The first command shows the effective policy. The second lists the values set at individual scopes. The effective value may differ from one you tried to set if a higher-precedence scope or Group Policy controls it. Microsoft’s Get-ExecutionPolicy reference documents both checks.
Review the script before unblocking it
Only proceed if you obtained the file from a source you trust and have checked what it does. A downloaded-file marker is not proof that a script is harmful, and removing that marker is not a safety check. Read the script before running it; do not treat a valid signature as proof of harmless behavior.

Unblock only the reviewed file
If the effective policy is RemoteSigned and the issue is that a reviewed downloaded script carries the downloaded-file block, run this command in PowerShell, substituting the script’s actual path:
Unblock-File -Path .script.ps1
For example, if the file is in your Downloads folder, use its full path, such as Unblock-File -Path "$HOMEDownloadsscript.ps1". Microsoft documents this targeted approach in its Set-ExecutionPolicy reference. The command unblocks that file; it does not change the effective execution policy. Run Get-ExecutionPolicy again if you want to confirm the policy stayed the same.

Understand the alternatives and their reach
Changing a policy scope is broader than unblocking one reviewed file. These options have different persistence and effects:
| Option | Effect | Reach and persistence |
|---|---|---|
Unblock-File for one script |
Removes that file’s downloaded-file block; does not change execution policy. | Limited to the specified file. |
Process scope |
Sets policy for the current PowerShell session. | Ends when that process or session closes. |
CurrentUser scope |
Sets policy for the current user. | Applies beyond the current session, but not machine-wide. |
LocalMachine scope |
Sets policy for all users. | Machine-wide; changing it requires an elevated shell. |
RemoteSigned |
Requires a trusted-publisher signature for downloaded scripts, while allowing locally written scripts without signatures. | Behavior depends on file origin and the effective scope. |
AllSigned |
Requires signatures for all scripts, including locally written ones. | A signature does not establish that a script is benign. |
Bypass |
Nothing is blocked, and there are no warnings or prompts. | Not a suitable casual fix for one script. |
Scope definitions and policy behavior are documented in Microsoft’s about_Execution_Policies reference.

If the policy is controlled by your organization
If Group Policy sets the effective policy on a work or school device, ask your administrator how to proceed. Do not try to override an organization-managed setting. A locally entered value may not take effect when a higher-precedence policy controls the result.
