How to Run a Private Personal AI Assistant Locally on Your Computer

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can run a ChatGPT-style assistant entirely on your computer by installing a local model runner, downloading a model whose files fit your available memory, and chatting through a desktop or browser interface. LM Studio is the simplest integrated desktop route; Ollama is better when you want a local service and API; Open WebUI can add a browser interface to Ollama and other compatible servers.

“Local” applies only to the endpoint you actually select. Your prompts stay on the device only when inference, document extraction, embeddings, speech processing, search and tools are also local and your network boundary prevents cloud fallbacks. Set up and test the basic model first, then add documents or tools one component at a time.

What a local AI assistant is—and what it is not

A local assistant is a language model whose inference process runs on your computer instead of on a hosted provider’s servers. The model weights are downloaded to local storage and loaded into system RAM, unified memory or dedicated GPU memory when you start a chat. Your application sends prompts to that local process and receives the response without needing a remote inference service.

This can improve control over sensitive conversations, reduce dependence on an internet connection and let you choose the model, interface and integrations. It does not automatically make every surrounding feature private. A browser interface may be configured to call a hosted model; a document pipeline may send files to a cloud extraction service; an embedding model or reranker may run elsewhere; and a search or plugin tool can transmit the text you give it.

Treat privacy as an architecture property, not a product label. Before using confidential material, identify every endpoint that handles it and verify that each one is local.

Ollama alone Someone building scripts, automations or a reusable local service Command-line and client applications Local API at http://localhost:11434 Use Ollama’s model workflow and connect compatible clients Audit every client connected to the API
Ollama plus Open WebUI Someone who wants a browser-based, multi-user-style chat experience on one computer Web browser Open WebUI can connect to Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM, LM Studio and other OpenAI-compatible servers Ollama manages models while Open WebUI supplies the interface Pin the interface release, persist its data, set a secret key and disable cloud tools for sensitive work
LM Studio plus Open WebUI Someone who prefers LM Studio’s model management but wants a browser client Browser connected to LM Studio’s compatible local endpoint Depends on the local server configuration you enable LM Studio downloads and loads models; Open WebUI connects to the exposed endpoint Confirm the selected provider is the LM Studio endpoint, not a hosted alternative

Start with one runner, one model and one short prompt. Additional layers make sense only after that path works.

Check your computer before downloading anything

Memory is the first constraint

Loading a model means allocating memory for its weights and other parameters. The required amount changes with the model’s parameter count, quantization format, context length and the number of conversations or requests you run at once. Your operating system and interface also need headroom, so a model that barely fits may still fail to load or become unusably slow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not pick hardware from a universal “minimum RAM” chart. Pick a model first, read the model publisher’s file-size and memory guidance, then compare that requirement with the memory available to the process. On a computer with a separate GPU, account for GPU memory and system RAM; on unified-memory hardware, both compete for the same pool.

Storage is more than the model file

Reserve space for the model weights, quantized variants you may test, chat history, document indexes, embeddings, extracted text, optional rerankers and speech models. Keep free space for operating-system updates and temporary downloads. A model can fit in memory and still fail because the drive is full while it is being downloaded or converted.

Acceleration and operating-system support

Smaller quantized models can run on a CPU or modest integrated hardware. Larger models generally benefit from more RAM or VRAM and from a supported GPU backend. Ollama’s Windows documentation describes native Windows support for NVIDIA and AMD Radeon GPUs; GPU acceleration also depends on a current driver and a compatible build. If you use containers for a web interface, follow the GPU-enabled container instructions for your platform rather than assuming that a host GPU is automatically visible inside the container.

Plan for the workload, not just a chat demo

  • Short, occasional chats: prioritize a model that leaves comfortable memory headroom.
  • Long documents: allow additional memory for a larger context and for the retrieval index.
  • Several users or parallel jobs: expect higher memory use and contention; test concurrency before exposing the service to others.
  • Voice input or output: reserve storage and memory for speech-recognition and speech-synthesis models.

Install and test LM Studio

LM Studio provides an integrated desktop workflow: discover a model, download it, load it into memory and chat. The labels can change between releases, so use the current installer and current in-app names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install the current application. Download the installer for your operating system from the official LM Studio distribution and complete the normal installation.
  2. Open Discover. Search for a model that has a license suitable for your use and a quantized file that fits your available memory. Model names, files and licenses change, so read the model card rather than relying on an old tutorial.
  3. Download one file. Begin with a smaller quantization if you are unsure of capacity. Keep the downloaded file on a local drive with sufficient free space.
  4. Load the model. Select the downloaded model and start a load. Watch memory use while it initializes; a load failure usually means the selected file, context setting or concurrent workload exceeds available memory.
  5. Send a short test prompt. Ask a simple question and confirm that the response arrives before importing documents or enabling tools. This isolates model and runner problems from later components.
  6. Decide whether you need a local server. If another application or Open WebUI must use LM Studio, enable its documented local-server function and configure the client to use that endpoint. Keep the endpoint bound to the local machine unless you intentionally need access from another device.

LM Studio’s downloaded-model chat and document processing can remain on the device. Catalog search and downloading new models require internet access, so complete those tasks before disconnecting if you want an offline workstation.

Install and test Ollama

Ollama is the better starting point when you want a background local service, a stable API for scripts or several clients that can share one model runner. On Windows it runs as a native application and documents NVIDIA and AMD Radeon GPU paths.

  1. Check the operating system. On Windows, use Windows 10 version 22H2 or newer and install the current graphics driver required by your GPU. Other operating systems have their own current package requirements.
  2. Install the current Ollama package. Use the official installer for your platform. Allow the application to start its local service.
  3. Download a model. Use Ollama’s model workflow to obtain a model whose license and quantized size match your use and hardware. Model identifiers and availability are not permanent, so verify them at installation time.
  4. Run a basic chat. Start the model through Ollama’s documented workflow and send a short prompt. Confirm a response before connecting an interface or a retrieval pipeline.
  5. Verify the local API. Ollama serves its local API at http://localhost:11434. Configure compatible applications to use that address and do not substitute a hosted endpoint when handling private prompts.
  6. Keep the service local unless required otherwise. A local-only binding reduces accidental exposure. If you deliberately make it reachable from another device, add authentication and network controls appropriate to that environment.

A successful API response proves that the model runner works; it does not prove that a client, tool or document service connected to it is local.

Add Open WebUI for a browser-based assistant

Open WebUI is optional. It provides a ChatGPT-style browser interface and can connect to Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM, LM Studio and other OpenAI-compatible servers. The endpoint selected for a conversation determines where inference occurs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the documented bundled Ollama deployment

The bundled Ollama deployment publishes the interface through the documented port mapping 3000:8080 and stores Ollama and Open WebUI data in persistent volumes. Use a pinned release tag rather than an unpinned moving tag when you need repeatable updates.

  1. Install a supported container runtime. Make sure it can persist volumes and, if needed, expose the host GPU to the container.
  2. Deploy the bundled image using the current Open WebUI instructions. Keep the Ollama and Open WebUI data directories on a drive with enough capacity for models, chats and indexes.
  3. Set a persistent WEBUI_SECRET_KEY. Store it outside disposable container configuration so restarting or recreating the container does not invalidate sessions or weaken protection.
  4. Open the local interface. Browse to the host’s port 3000 and complete the initial account setup. Do not expose that port to the public internet without a deliberate authentication and network design.
  5. Choose the local provider explicitly. In the connection or model settings, select your local Ollama, LM Studio or other local endpoint. If a hosted provider is enabled, treat it as a separate privacy path.
  6. Test ordinary chat. Use a harmless prompt first, then verify the conversation is stored where you expect before adding sensitive material.

Audit what the browser interface can call

Open WebUI’s local inference option does not make separately configured cloud tools, extraction services or embedding providers local. Review provider, tool, search, retrieval and speech settings. For a hard privacy boundary, remove or disable cloud connections, keep the service bound to trusted interfaces and enforce the boundary with firewall rules or network isolation.

Build private document retrieval without accidental uploads

Document question-answering is a separate system from ordinary chat. A typical local retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline extracts text, splits it into chunks, creates embeddings, stores an index, retrieves relevant chunks and sends those chunks to the language model. Each stage can run locally or remotely.

  1. Prepare a test document. Use a non-sensitive file first and confirm that its text can be extracted correctly, including tables, scans and unusual encodings.
  2. Choose a local embedding model. Download the embedding model while connected, verify its license and keep its files on the same local storage boundary.
  3. Choose extraction software. PDFs, office files and scanned images may require different extractors or OCR. A local language model does not guarantee that extraction is local.
  4. Create an index. Store embeddings and extracted text in a local directory or database with suitable file permissions. Back it up separately from chat history if the documents matter.
  5. Add a reranker only if needed. A reranker can improve which passages are selected, but it is another model and another memory requirement.
  6. Ask a document-specific test question. Check that the answer cites or quotes the expected passage. Ordinary conversation succeeding does not prove that extraction, embedding and retrieval are configured correctly.
  7. Inspect network activity. Confirm that the RAG components contact only local addresses. If the application offers a cloud fallback, disable it before importing confidential files.

Keep source files, extracted text, indexes and backups under the same access controls. Deleting a chat does not necessarily delete an index or an extracted temporary file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare for genuinely offline use

Offline operation requires more preparation than downloading a language model. While connected, obtain every application package, container image, model weight, embedding model, extraction or OCR model, reranker and optional speech asset you intend to use.

  1. Inventory dependencies. Write down the runner, interface, model files, retrieval models, speech assets and any tools used by your workflows.
  2. Cache installers and images. Keep copies locally and record the exact application or container release so an update is not required to recreate the setup.
  3. Persist application data. Use durable model directories, chat storage and Open WebUI volumes. A disposable container or temporary cache will not survive a rebuild.
  4. Restart-test before disconnecting. Shut down and restart the runner, interface and retrieval services. Test a fresh chat and a document question after the restart.
  5. Enforce the boundary. Use the operating system firewall, a separate network or physical disconnection if you require a hard offline guarantee. Merely closing a browser tab does not prevent a configured service from making a request.
  6. Disconnect and test again. Confirm that chat, retrieval and any required speech features still work without network access. Catalog browsing and new model downloads will not work until you reconnect.

Understand the privacy boundary before using sensitive data

Inference location

The selected model endpoint receives your prompt and generates the answer. In Open WebUI, verify the provider chosen for that conversation; a local interface can still route a request to a hosted model.

Embedding and extraction location

RAG systems may send files to separate embedding or extraction services. Keep those models and services on the same machine, or treat the data as leaving the device.

Web search, connectors, plugins and agent actions can transmit prompt text or retrieved passages. Disable them for confidential work unless you have verified their network behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage and access

Local data can still be exposed through another user account, a shared folder, an unprotected browser port, backups or malware. Use operating-system permissions, encrypted storage where appropriate and a local-only bind for services that do not need remote access.

How to choose a model responsibly

  • Fit first: compare the quantized file and expected runtime memory with your available RAM or VRAM, leaving headroom for the operating system and interface.
  • Match the task: general chat, coding, summarization, multilingual work and document retrieval can favor different models.
  • Read the license: confirm that personal, commercial or redistribution rights match your intended use.
  • Check context behavior: a model that fits with a short context may exceed memory when you increase context length or attach long documents.
  • Prefer reproducibility: record the model identifier, quantization, runner version and settings that produced useful results.

Names, quantized files and availability change. A recommendation that was suitable for one release may not describe the files available when you install.

Common failures and practical fixes

The model will not load

First reduce the selected context length and close other model processes. If it still fails, choose a smaller quantized file or free memory. Check both system RAM and GPU or unified memory; a file can fit one pool while the runtime needs another.

Responses are extremely slow

Confirm whether the runner is using the intended GPU backend and current driver. If acceleration is unavailable, reduce model size or context length and avoid parallel requests. A larger model is not automatically better for a workload that cannot run comfortably.

A document answer is empty or inaccurate

Test extraction separately with a plain-text file, then test embeddings and retrieval with a question whose answer is obvious. Scanned PDFs may need OCR; poor chunking or an undersized context can also hide the relevant passage.

The setup works online but fails offline

Identify the missing asset from the error message, reconnect and download that package, model or container layer, then restart-test again. Catalog access is not the same dependency as inference, so an assistant can chat offline even though its model browser cannot.

A supposedly private conversation leaves the machine

Review the selected provider, tools, search connectors, extraction service, embedding provider and network logs. Remove cloud integrations, switch every component to a local implementation and enforce a firewall or disconnected-network test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance without losing privacy

Updates can change model identifiers, provider lists, driver behavior, storage formats and default network settings. Before upgrading, record the working runner version, interface release, model files, endpoint addresses and volume locations. Back up chat data and document indexes, then upgrade one component at a time.

For Open WebUI, pin a release tag for production and keep WEBUI_SECRET_KEY persistent. For GPU acceleration, update drivers deliberately and rerun a short performance and privacy test. Do not assume that a new default tool or provider is local simply because the interface itself is installed on your computer.

A sensible rollout plan

  1. Day-one baseline: install LM Studio or Ollama, download one appropriately sized model and verify a short local chat.
  2. Interface upgrade: add Open WebUI only if a browser workflow, multiple clients or shared conversation history is useful.
  3. Privacy audit: list every endpoint and disable anything that is not required or cannot be verified as local.
  4. Document pilot: use a harmless file to validate extraction, embeddings, retrieval and storage before importing sensitive documents.
  5. Offline drill: restart everything, disconnect the network and test each feature you intend to rely on.
  6. Controlled expansion: add speech, tools, larger models or remote access one at a time, repeating the memory, latency and network checks after each change.

The result is a personal assistant whose behavior you can inspect: a chosen local model, a known interface, explicit storage locations and a verified network boundary. That is the practical definition of private local operation.
