A local encoder needs a computer, media files, power, and a reliable internet connection available for the stream to continue. Before going live, confirm your channel is eligible and clear the rights for every recording and musical work in the stream.
What you need before starting
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube’s getting-started guidance says the channel must be verified, have no livestream restriction in the previous 90 days, and the person livestreaming must be at least 16.
- A playback route: Use an encoder on a computer you can keep running, or arrange cloud playout that sends the feed to YouTube.
- Permission for the complete program: Check the rights for each recording and the underlying music or lyrics as applicable, including the territories where the stream can be watched.
- A way to monitor and recover: Decide how you will notice a failed feed, review YouTube Studio for warnings, and resume after an interruption.
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights on the person providing the live content, including music licensing rights. A recording being online, owned by your organization, or performed for religious purposes does not by itself establish permission to stream it.

Set up a local encoder stream
1. Confirm eligibility and create the broadcast
- Verify the channel and check that it has not had a livestream restriction in the last 90 days. Confirm the age requirement for the person livestreaming.
- In YouTube’s Live Control Room, choose encoder streaming and create the broadcast.
- Copy the stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your channel.
The stream key tells the encoder where to send the video and lets YouTube accept the feed. Keep it secure when configuring either a local encoder or a cloud service.
2. Prepare the recording or playlist
Put the cleared recordings in the order you want viewers to hear them. In OBS or your chosen encoder, add the media source or sources and configure playback to repeat using that encoder’s current instructions. YouTube supports encoder streaming, but its general encoder guidance does not prescribe a particular OBS playlist or looping menu sequence; check the current instructions for the software version you use.

Test the whole playlist, not just its first item. Listen and watch through a transition, verify that the picture and sound continue, and check that the encoder is sending a feed YouTube can receive before leaving it unattended.
3. Choose compatible video and stream settings
Use the current YouTube encoder guidance for the resolution and settings you intend to send. Match the encoder’s output to that guidance rather than guessing a bitrate or keyframe interval: the material available here does not establish a reliable set of numeric values for every resolution, frame rate, encoder, or connection. Confirm the chosen settings in the encoder and check YouTube’s stream health during a test.

For a local setup, playback depends on the computer staying powered on and connected, the files remaining accessible, and the network continuing to upload the feed. Plan for someone or an alerting method to notice a stopped encoder or a YouTube warning; starting a loop alone does not provide monitoring or recovery.

- Start a test feed and confirm YouTube receives it and reports healthy stream status.
- Check audio, image, playlist order, and transitions. Confirm that the loop returns to the beginning as expected.
- Leave the setup running long enough to check that playback continues and that the encoder behaves as expected after a transition.
- Keep a copy of permissions and a contact for each rights holder available to whoever monitors the stream.
- If YouTube interrupts the broadcast, review YouTube Studio for the warning or strike, address the specific issue, and verify that the channel is eligible to resume before restarting.
Clear rights for the exact kirtan recordings
Rights depend on the particular recordings, performers, rights holders, and territories. There is no blanket permission that can be inferred for Sikh kirtan as a category. Make an inventory for every item before scheduling it:

- Recording title and the specific recording or version you will use.
- Performer and recording owner, where known.
- Underlying composition, lyrics, or other relevant musical works and their rights holders.
- Written permission or licenses covering livestreaming in the territories where the stream will be available.
- Whether the permission also covers an archived replay and monetization, if either is planned.
- Any requirement to add your channel to a rights holder’s Content ID allowlist.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match may trigger a warning, a placeholder image, interruption, or termination. Even if you have a license, the stream can be interrupted if the relevant rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting before the broadcast, and retain the response with your permissions.
Decide whether to keep an archived replay
Archiving is a separate choice from sending the live feed. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the stream is complete if you choose to archive it. Check that your permissions cover both the live transmission and any replay before enabling an archive.

Copyright permission is not the same as monetization eligibility
Do not assume a continuously looping kirtan stream will earn ad revenue. YouTube’s reused-content policy is separate from copyright enforcement, applies channel-wide, and can affect monetization even where permission exists. Repetitive or minimally varied programming may have monetization problems. Consider the originality and viewer value of the full channel, and assess it against YouTube Partner Program policy; no general rule establishes the outcome for a particular Sikh kirtan channel.
