Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor the cleanest source continuity, edit your gaming highlights into one continuous video file, check its ending-to-beginning loop point, and play it through an encoder connected to YouTube Live. That avoids relying on clip-to-clip transitions in a playlist, but it cannot prevent an internet, computer, or YouTube interruption. YouTube does not promise that playlists of separate media files will transition without gaps.
What “no-gap” can—and cannot—mean
A continuous source file can remove pauses caused by switching between highlight clips. It does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: the encoder, computer, network connection, or YouTube can still interrupt the stream. Treat source continuity and stream reliability as separate problems.

YouTube’s guidance covers encoder setup and stream health, but does not certify gapless transitions between separate files in OBS or other playback software. If you use a playlist, verify its behavior with the exact software and configuration you plan to use.
Choose how to play the highlights
| Approach | Best fit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| One pre-rendered continuous file | Strict source continuity and a straightforward playback setup | You must prepare the reel and inspect its loop point. It does not prevent network or platform interruptions. |
| Separate files in a playlist | Clips you need to swap or update independently | Transition behavior depends on the playback system; YouTube does not guarantee gapless transitions. Test the precise setup. |
Prepare and inspect a single-file reel
- Select and edit the highlights in the intended order, then render them as one continuous file.
- Normalize audio levels so changes between clips are not jarring. Check for abrupt silence, clipping, or unexpectedly loud transitions.
- Inspect the final seconds and opening seconds together. Adjust the edit so the end leads cleanly into the start if you plan to loop the file.
- Play the complete file locally before streaming. Check video, audio, duration, and the loop point using the playback setup you will use live.
Set up YouTube Live and connect an encoder
You need a verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. For prerecorded highlights, the encoder workflow is appropriate; a capture card is not needed just to play files. A capture card is relevant when routing live console gameplay into a computer encoder.

- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Choose the Gaming stream type, then set the title, description, visibility, and schedule you want.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Set the encoder to play the continuous highlight file, or configure the playlist you intend to use. Confirm that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube event before making the stream public.
Choose stable video and audio settings
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to values that your computer and upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder recommendations include H.264, H.265, and AV1 in supported workflows, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use the resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate example in YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream: YouTube Live encoder settings.
- Run an upload speed test and leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the connection’s best-case result.
- Use representative gameplay footage when testing; fast motion can expose encoding or connection problems that a static screen will not.
- Check that audio is present, synchronized, and not distorted in the Live Control Room preview.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the watch page plays on both desktop and mobile.
- Keep a local recording running and verify that its file is growing and playable.
RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
RTMP or RTMPS is the usual encoder ingest choice. HLS is a separate workflow for cases that need a supported HDR or codec path; YouTube specifies 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte-range support. HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments, so it is not an automatic upgrade for a highlights loop. OBS is among the encoders YouTube lists as HLS-capable. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Preflight continuity and reliability
- Allow time for setup: YouTube recommends preparing at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it begins.
- Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going live. Check audio, motion, stream health, and the intended public or unlisted watch page.
- If using a backup encoder, test failover by stopping the primary and verifying that the player rolls over as expected. A backup that has never been tested is not a dependable recovery plan.
- Confirm the local recording is accessible and intact. Keep it separate from the encoder’s playback source where practical, so a source-file problem does not also destroy the archive.
- During the stream, monitor picture, sound, and stream health. These steps improve readiness but cannot guarantee against every device, network, or platform failure.
Pick latency for the program
For a prerecorded loop without live conversation, viewer response speed is usually less important than stable playback. YouTube explains that lower latency means less read-ahead buffering, which can make viewers more likely to encounter playback issues; congestion can still delay a stream even when average bandwidth looks adequate. Choose the latency setting to suit the audience interaction you actually need. See YouTube’s live-streaming latency guidance.

YouTube may automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Record locally and consider planned session boundaries for a long-running channel. YouTube also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Disabling DVR prevents viewers from seeking back during the live stream, even if a recording becomes available afterward. You can create highlight clips while a stream is live. Copyright and reused gameplay
Only stream gameplay footage, music, overlays, and other material you have the rights or permissions to use. A game publisher’s permission to play a game does not automatically cover every song or other third-party asset in a highlight reel. YouTube may detect copyrighted material during a live stream; claims or restrictions can disrupt the broadcast or affect the video afterward. Review YouTube’s rules and the rights for the specific game and audio you use before building a loop. Repeatedly replaying a reel does not itself establish that you own its contents or have permission to broadcast them.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A pause or black frame between highlights | Separate-file transition or an edit gap | Use a continuous rendered file, inspect its transitions, or test the playlist behavior under the exact playback configuration. |
| The stream does not connect | Incorrect stream URL or key, an inactive event, or channel eligibility restrictions | Copy the current URL and key from the intended Live Control Room event; confirm the channel is verified and has no restriction in the prior 90 days. |
| Buffering or degraded stream health | Bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity, upload congestion, or unstable encoding | Reduce output bitrate or resolution, leave more upload headroom, and test again with representative motion. |
| Viewers hear missing, clipped, or uneven sound | Audio absent from the playback path, poor level matching, or an encoder audio setting mismatch | Check the local file and encoder meters, listen to the Live Control Room preview, and normalize levels in the reel. |
| No archive appears after a very long stream | The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold | Use a local recording and schedule shorter sessions when an on-platform archive matters. |
| Playback cuts out despite a clean source file | Computer, network, encoder, or platform interruption | Check encoder and stream-health status, verify the connection, and use a tested backup plan. A gapless file cannot prevent delivery failures. |
