Yes—you can run a local large language model (LLM) on a laptop with no discrete GPU. The CPU is the universal fallback: it loads the model into system memory and generates tokens there. A supported integrated GPU can accelerate some workloads, but it is optional and depends on the processor, drivers, operating system, runtime and model format.

For the least setup, use LM Studio’s graphical interface or Ollama’s command line. Use llama.cpp directly when you need more control over quantization, CPU settings, a local server or an accelerator backend. Your practical limits are system RAM, free disk space, context length, model size and heat—not the absence of a gaming-class GPU.

What “without a discrete GPU” actually means

A discrete GPU is a separate graphics card with its own high-bandwidth memory. A laptop without one can still perform inference on its CPU. In CPU inference, the model weights and the working context occupy ordinary system RAM, while the processor performs the mathematical operations that produce each next token.

Many laptops also contain an integrated GPU (iGPU) built into the processor. It usually borrows system memory rather than having dedicated VRAM. Some runtimes can use that hardware, but support is selective. An iGPU is not a drop-in replacement for a discrete card, and enabling it can require a specific driver, backend and compatible model build.

Generation speed varies too much to promise a universal tokens-per-second figure. The processor, memory bandwidth, thermal limits, model architecture, quantization, context length and runtime all matter. Test the exact model on the exact laptop before deciding whether a workload is practical.

Check the laptop before downloading anything

Do these checks first. A model’s download size is only the storage occupied by its files; it is not the complete amount of RAM required while the model is running.

Check Why it matters What to record
System memory The operating system, model weights, context and other applications all compete for RAM. Total RAM and how much is free when the laptop is idle.
Free storage Model files can consume several gigabytes, and keeping multiple quantizations multiplies that requirement. Free space on the internal drive and the destination folder.
Operating system and CPU Runtimes have different installers and instruction-set requirements. Windows, macOS or Linux; CPU family; and whether the system is x64 or Apple Silicon.
Thermals and power Long CPU workloads can make a thin laptop reduce its clock speed or drain its battery quickly. Whether you can run from wall power with unobstructed ventilation.
Integrated-GPU details Acceleration is hardware- and driver-specific. Exact GPU model, driver version and available shared memory, if you intend to test an iGPU backend.

On Windows, open Settings > System > About to see the processor and installed RAM. On macOS, choose Apple menu > About This Mac; Apple Silicon systems use the MLX path in applications that support it. On Linux, your desktop’s system-information panel or tools such as free -h and lscpu show memory and CPU details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LM Studio’s current requirements list AVX2 for x64 Windows and recommend at least 16 GB of RAM. Its Apple Silicon guidance also recommends 16 GB or more; an 8 GB Mac should use a smaller model and a modest context. Requirements can change with the application version, so check the LM Studio system-requirements page for your operating system before installing.

Choose a model that fits memory, not just disk space

Start with the smallest model that can answer your questions acceptably. A compact model with a short context is much more likely to feel usable on a CPU-only laptop than a large model that forces the system into swapping.

Choice Best starting use Trade-off
Small model (roughly 1B–3B class) Simple chat, rewriting, short summaries and basic local automation. Lower memory demand and easier CPU inference, but weaker reasoning and less reliable long-form output.
Mid-size model (roughly 7B–8B class) More capable general chat and coding when the laptop has sufficient memory. Higher RAM use and slower CPU generation; context length becomes especially important.
Large model Only when you have ample memory and accept long waits. Often impractical on a thin CPU-only laptop, even if the download fits on disk.
Quantized build Running a model in less memory through a runtime that supports the format. Lower numerical precision can change output quality; it does not make a large model free to run.

llama.cpp documents integer quantization levels from 1.5-bit through 8-bit. Lower-bit files usually need less memory, while higher-bit files preserve more numerical precision. Treat quantization as a trade-off, not a guarantee that two files will produce identical answers. Confirm that the runtime you choose supports the model’s format.

Ollama’s Llama 3.2 listing is a useful illustration of why download size and runtime memory are different. The page lists 1.3 GB and 2.0 GB downloads for smaller tags, including a 1B variant; those figures describe the listed model downloads, not a universal RAM requirement for every model or context. See the Ollama Llama 3.2 model listing for the current tags and sizes.

Option 1: Run a model in LM Studio

LM Studio is the simplest graphical route. It runs llama.cpp models on macOS, Windows and Linux, and supports MLX models on Apple Silicon Macs. Once the model files are present, it can work offline and can expose local API endpoints for applications on your computer. The application documentation is at LM Studio’s app documentation.

  1. Install the correct build. Download the version for your operating system and confirm the requirements, especially AVX2 on x64 Windows and the memory guidance for your Mac.
  2. Open the model catalog. Search for a small model first. Prefer a quantized build when your selected runtime supports it, and note the download size before starting.
  3. Download the weights. Keep enough free disk space for the file and future versions. Do not close the laptop or interrupt the download until the application reports completion.
  4. Select the runtime. Choose llama.cpp for broadly compatible CPU inference. On an Apple Silicon Mac, choose an MLX build when the model and application offer one and you want to test that backend.
  5. Load the model. Begin with a short context and conservative memory settings. Leave RAM available for the operating system and your prompt.
  6. Send a small test prompt. Ask for a short answer first. Watch whether generation is steady, whether the system starts swapping and whether the laptop becomes uncomfortably hot.
  7. Adjust one variable at a time. If the result is usable, increase context or try a larger model. If it is not, reduce context, choose a smaller quantization or close other applications before changing several settings at once.

LM Studio can also serve a model through a local API. That is useful for a script or editor that expects an OpenAI-compatible local endpoint, but the exact endpoint and interface can change with the application version; use the current API section in its documentation rather than copying an old port number.

Option 2: Run Ollama from the command line

Ollama provides installers for macOS, Linux and Windows. Its model library and command-line workflow make it a good choice when you prefer a short command over a graphical model manager. Install it from the official Ollama download page.

  1. Install Ollama. Choose the installer for your operating system and allow its local service to start if the installer asks.
  2. Run a general model. Open a terminal or PowerShell and enter ollama run llama3.2. Ollama downloads the model if it is not already present, then opens an interactive prompt.
  3. Start smaller if memory is tight. Use ollama run llama3.2:1b for the listed 1B tag. Its published download size is an example of disk usage, not a promise about total runtime RAM.
  4. Test with a short prompt. Ask for a concise response and observe memory use, temperature and responsiveness before attempting a long document or large context.
  5. Keep model files organized. If internal storage is limited, place the model store on a sufficiently fast external drive only if your Ollama configuration and operating system support that location. Moving files changes storage capacity, not the CPU’s generation speed.

Ollama notes that speed depends on hardware and that large local models can be slow without a strong GPU. That is why a small model and modest context are sensible first tests rather than evidence that every model will perform the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 3: Use llama.cpp directly for maximum control

llama.cpp is the lower-level route. Its README documents CPU execution, quantized models, server workflows and hardware backends. It requires more setup than a desktop application, but it gives you control over the model file, quantization and execution backend. Start with the llama.cpp README.

  1. Obtain a build. Use a release build appropriate to your operating system, or build the project with the toolchain described in the README.
  2. Choose a compatible model file. llama.cpp commonly uses GGUF files. Select a quantization that fits your memory and verify that the file is intended for the model family you want to run.
  3. Run a CPU test. From the directory containing the command-line binary, use a command in this form: ./llama-cli -m /path/to/model.gguf -p 'Write a two-sentence summary of CPU inference.'. Replace the path with the actual file location.
  4. Keep the first prompt short. A short test separates model-loading problems from context or workload problems.
  5. Use the server mode if an application needs an endpoint. Follow the README’s current server command and options; binaries and flags can change between releases.

On Apple Silicon, llama.cpp documents Metal acceleration. It also documents Intel GPU support through its SYCL backend, along with other platform-specific backends. These paths may need separate drivers and are not required for a working CPU setup.

CPU first, integrated GPU second

The CPU path is the most portable baseline. It avoids GPU-driver compatibility problems and works even when the laptop’s integrated graphics are unsupported. An iGPU is worth testing only after the CPU path loads the model successfully.

Path Advantages Limitations
CPU inference Broad compatibility, no special GPU backend and no dedicated graphics hardware required. Generation may be slow, especially with larger models or long contexts; sustained load can trigger thermal throttling.
Supported iGPU backend May accelerate some operations by using graphics compute hardware. Requires a compatible runtime, driver and memory arrangement; shared RAM is still a system resource.
Discrete GPU Often provides more parallel compute and dedicated high-bandwidth memory. Not required for a small local model and outside this guide’s hardware assumption.

For Intel integrated graphics, llama.cpp’s SYCL documentation covers selected devices, including specified 11th-generation and newer hardware. It does not mean every Intel iGPU works with every llama.cpp release. Confirm the exact GPU, operating system, driver and backend version in the llama.cpp SYCL documentation.

Memory guidance differs by implementation. The llama.cpp example for a Llama 2 7B Q4 configuration calls for at least 8 GB of shared memory and warns that fewer than 80 execution units may be too slow for practical use. Intel’s separate guide for the same general 7B Q4 class recommends more than 4.5 GB of shared memory and at least 16 GB of total system memory. These are configuration-specific recommendations, not universal minimums. The guide is available at Intel’s llama.cpp GPU article.

Install the required graphics driver before selecting an iGPU backend. If the backend fails to initialize, return to CPU inference rather than assuming the model or laptop is defective. Shared memory also reduces what remains for the operating system, so an iGPU run can fail even when the model’s file appears to fit on disk.

Make CPU inference more usable

Keep context length proportional to the task

Context includes the conversation, instructions and documents supplied to the model. A longer context consumes more memory and generally increases the work required for each response. Start with the application’s modest default, then increase it only when you have a concrete need such as a longer document.

Close competing applications

Browsers with many tabs, virtual machines, photo editors and development environments can consume the RAM your model needs. Close them before concluding that a model is too large. Leave headroom rather than running at the point where the operating system begins swapping to disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use wall power and ventilation

CPU inference is a sustained workload. Plug in the laptop, use a hard surface and keep air intakes clear. A sudden drop in generation rate after several minutes often indicates thermal or power management rather than a model-format problem.

Prefer a smaller model over extreme settings

Reducing context and choosing a smaller quantized model usually produces a better experience than forcing a large model into insufficient memory. Quantization reduces the representation size, but it cannot remove the cost of the model’s layers, runtime buffers or context.

Do not treat storage as acceleration

An external SSD can be a practical place to keep model files when internal storage is constrained. It does not make token generation faster after the model is loaded. A slow drive can lengthen loading, but the sustained generation work still occurs in system memory and on the CPU or selected accelerator.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The application will not start

  • Check that the installer matches the operating system and CPU architecture.
  • On x64 Windows, verify AVX2 support for the current LM Studio requirements.
  • Update the application from its official download channel rather than mixing binaries from different versions.

The model downloads but will not load

  • Compare available RAM with the model size, context setting and other running applications; the download size is not the full runtime requirement.
  • Try a smaller model or lower-bit quantization supported by your runtime.
  • Reduce context and retry after closing memory-heavy applications.
  • Confirm that the model format matches the selected runtime, such as a compatible llama.cpp/GGUF build.

The laptop freezes or becomes unusably slow

  • Stop generation and check whether the operating system is swapping.
  • Lower context, use a smaller model and run on wall power.
  • Improve ventilation and allow the laptop to cool before retesting.

The iGPU backend fails

  • Verify the exact GPU is listed for the backend you selected.
  • Install or update the required driver, then restart the application.
  • Test the same model on CPU. If CPU works, the model is probably usable and the problem is isolated to backend compatibility or configuration.

Output is poor after quantization

  • Try a higher-bit quantization if memory allows.
  • Compare the same prompt and context length; changing both model and prompt makes the result difficult to diagnose.
  • Remember that lower precision trades numerical accuracy for a smaller representation, so unchanged quality is not guaranteed.

Privacy, offline use and local APIs

After model files are downloaded, LM Studio can operate offline and can expose local API endpoints for software running on the same machine. Ollama and llama.cpp also run the inference process locally. “Local” does not automatically describe every feature in a surrounding application, so review any optional telemetry, remote-model or network settings you enable. For sensitive work, disconnect the network during a test and confirm that the workflow still functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A local endpoint is useful for a script, editor or home automation tool, but protect it like any other service. Bind it only where needed, do not expose it to the public internet without authentication and firewall rules, and avoid placing secrets in prompts unless you understand where the calling application stores logs.

Which setup should you choose?

Your priority Best starting path Why
Fewest decisions and a visual chat window LM Studio with a small llama.cpp model Download, select a runtime, load and chat without building a toolchain.
Fastest command-line experiment Ollama with ollama run llama3.2:1b A short installer-and-command workflow and a listed small model tag.
Control over files, quantization and servers llama.cpp More configuration and setup, but direct access to CPU and supported accelerator backends.
Apple Silicon laptop LM Studio’s MLX option or llama.cpp with Metal, when supported These runtimes document Apple-specific acceleration; CPU remains the fallback.
Intel laptop with a potentially usable iGPU CPU first, then llama.cpp SYCL SYCL support is hardware- and driver-specific, so a working CPU baseline makes troubleshooting possible.

A practical first-day plan

  1. Record RAM, free disk space, operating system and CPU model.
  2. Install LM Studio or Ollama; choose llama.cpp directly only if you need its additional control.
  3. Download one small, quantized model and keep the context short.
  4. Run a short prompt on CPU while plugged in.
  5. Check responsiveness, memory pressure and temperature for several minutes.
  6. Only then try a larger model, a longer context or a supported iGPU backend—one change at a time.
  7. Keep the model that meets your quality and patience requirements; an impressive file size is not a useful result if the laptop cannot run it comfortably.
