How to Run a Generator Safely During a Power Outage

Run a portable generator only outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents, with its exhaust pointed away from the building. Never operate it in a home, garage, basement, shed, crawlspace, porch, carport or any other enclosed or partly enclosed area. Open doors and windows do not make indoor operation safe because carbon monoxide (CO) is colorless and odorless.

Set up the generator before connecting anything

Portable generators solve one problem—lack of electricity—but create a lethal exhaust hazard if they are positioned incorrectly. Choose the operating location before an outage so you are not making decisions in darkness, rain or cold.

Choose an outdoor location with a clear exhaust path

  1. Set the generator on a stable, level surface outdoors.
  2. Keep it at least the required 20-foot separation from every door, window and vent. Measure from the generator, not merely from the end of the exhaust pipe.
  3. Point the exhaust away from the house and away from neighboring buildings, occupied areas and openings.
  4. Check the wind direction and nearby structures. A location that is technically outside can still allow exhaust to collect near an opening if walls, fences or other obstructions redirect it.
  5. Keep the generator where people will not need to walk through the exhaust stream to reach the unit or connected appliances.

CDC’s plain-language instruction is: “When you’re using a generator, keep it outside at least 20 feet away from any doors, windows, or vents.” Treat that as a minimum placement rule, not a target to reduce when space is tight.

Places that are never acceptable

Do not run a portable generator in any of these locations:

  • Inside the home or another occupied building
  • A basement or crawlspace
  • A garage, even if the garage door is fully open
  • A shed or other outbuilding
  • A porch, veranda or carport
  • Any enclosed or partly enclosed shelter

CPSC’s warning is unambiguous: “NEVER operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed spaces.” An open garage door, an open window or a fan does not reliably remove CO. Moving the unit just outside an opening can also allow exhaust to enter the building.

Use carbon-monoxide alarms and know the emergency response

Install alarms before the outage

Place battery-operated CO alarms, or alarms with battery backup, outside sleeping areas and on every floor. Test each alarm monthly, including units that have not sounded an alert recently. Keep spare batteries available, and replace batteries and alarms according to their labels and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Alarms are a second line of defense. They do not make indoor generator operation safe, compensate for inadequate separation or permit exhaust to face a window. The generator must still be outdoors and correctly positioned.

Recognize CO poisoning symptoms

CDC lists headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain and confusion among possible CO-poisoning symptoms. People may not realize what is happening because CO has no color or smell. Treat symptoms during generator use as an emergency, especially when more than one person feels ill.

What to do when an alarm sounds or someone feels ill

  1. Get everyone, including pets, outside to fresh air immediately.
  2. Call 911. You can also contact Poison Control for guidance.
  3. Do not go back inside to switch off, move or troubleshoot the generator.
  4. Tell emergency responders that a generator was operating and identify any symptoms.
  5. Do not re-enter until responders say it is safe.

CPSC estimated that about 750 people in the United States died from generator-associated CO poisoning during 2012–2022. That is a period estimate, not an annual rate, but it shows why an alarm should trigger immediate evacuation rather than investigation.

Connect appliances without creating an electrical hazard

Use a suitable outdoor-rated extension cord

Use an outdoor-rated extension cord that is long enough to keep the generator at the required separation from the building. CDC guidance specifies a cord longer than 20 feet for this purpose. Check the cord’s rating against the generator’s output, the appliance load and the generator manufacturer’s instructions; no single wire gauge is correct for every generator and load.

  • Inspect the cord before each use. Do not use one with cuts, crushed insulation, exposed conductors, damaged plugs or overheated sections.
  • Use a cord and plug configuration that matches the generator’s receptacle and the appliance. Never force a connection or defeat a grounding feature.
  • Route the cord so vehicles, doors, foot traffic and water cannot damage it. Keep the generator’s controls accessible without entering the exhaust path.
  • Connect only the appliances you have planned for. Add their running and starting demands and stay within the generator’s rated output; consult the owner’s manual for the way that model states these limits.

If a cord becomes hot, smells of melting insulation, trips protection repeatedly or shows discoloration, shut down the affected load and stop using the cord until it has been replaced or evaluated.

Never energize house wiring through a wall outlet

Plugging a generator into a household wall outlet is backfeeding. It can send electricity onto building wiring and utility lines, creating a shock or electrocution hazard for occupants, neighbors and utility workers. It can also damage the generator or the building’s electrical system. A power strip or outlet adapter does not make backfeeding safe.

Use a transfer switch for selected household circuits

If you want to power permanently wired circuits—such as a furnace, well pump or selected refrigerator circuit—ask a qualified electrician about an appropriate transfer switch and installation. The switch is designed to isolate the building from the utility supply before generator power reaches the selected circuits. Do not improvise a wiring method, remove a panel cover or attempt to install a transfer switch without the required qualifications and permits.

Older CPSC guidance is useful for the central distinction: outdoor-use cords are for connecting equipment directly, while household wiring requires a properly installed transfer switch. Local electrical-code requirements and equipment ratings vary, so the electrician and the generator manual control the final design.

Rain, snow and other weather conditions

Water and electricity can create a shock hazard, but there is no single sheltering arrangement that is safe for every generator. Manufacturers specify different clearances, covers, ventilation requirements and prohibited conditions. Read the weather section of your owner’s manual before operating in rain or snow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not improvise an enclosure

Never solve precipitation by moving the generator into a garage, shed, porch, carport or makeshift enclosure. Blocking rain must not block ventilation or allow exhaust to collect. Do not drape a tarp over a running unit unless the manufacturer specifically provides and approves that arrangement. If the manual does not describe safe operation in the current conditions, shut the unit down and wait for conditions that meet its instructions.

Keep the setup stable

Before starting, check that the surface is level and that snow, leaves or debris cannot obstruct the exhaust. Recheck the area as weather changes. Strong wind can alter where exhaust travels, so the original position may no longer protect nearby openings.

Refuel only after shutdown and cooling

Fuel vapors can ignite on hot engine or exhaust parts. CPSC’s direct instruction is: “Never refuel a generator while it is running.”

  1. Turn off all connected loads according to the owner’s manual.
  2. Shut the generator down using its normal stop control.
  3. Allow the engine and exhaust system to cool before opening the fuel cap.
  4. Refuel outdoors, away from flames, smoking materials, pilot lights and other ignition sources.
  5. Wipe up spills and close the fuel container before restarting.

Use only the fuel type and storage method specified for your model. Do not guess about fuel stabilizer, storage duration, mixed fuels or approved containers; those details are model- and fuel-specific.

A safe operating routine during the outage

Once the location, alarms and connections are ready, use the same sequence every time. A routine reduces mistakes when the outage lasts overnight or several people are sharing the equipment.

  1. Survey the site. Confirm the generator remains outdoors, the required separation from openings is clear, the exhaust points away from buildings and the weather still meets the manual’s instructions.
  2. Check the unit. Look for fuel leaks, damaged controls, loose parts or blocked exhaust. Verify the fuel level and oil condition as directed by the manual.
  3. Disconnect loads before starting. Remove or switch off appliance connections as the manual requires, then start the generator using its specified procedure.
  4. Let the unit stabilize. Follow the manual’s warm-up or connection sequence before adding loads.
  5. Connect only planned loads. Use the approved outdoor-rated cord or the professionally installed transfer-switch arrangement. Add appliances one at a time if the manual recommends that approach, watching for overload signs.
  6. Monitor people and alarms. Check that CO alarms remain powered and that no one develops symptoms. An alarm or symptom ends the procedure: evacuate and call for help.
  7. Shut down before refueling or changing the setup. Remove loads and stop the engine as specified. Let it cool before handling fuel or moving connections.

Never leave a running generator unattended when a child, visitor or untrained household member could approach it. Keep operating instructions and emergency contact information where the person supervising the outage can find them.

Prepare before the next outage

Generator readiness checklist

  • Read the complete owner’s manual, especially starting, stopping, grounding, load limits, weather and refueling sections.
  • Record the generator’s rated output and the starting requirements of the appliances you intend to use.
  • Inspect the fuel system, oil, exhaust, wheels, frame, controls and receptacles according to the maintenance schedule.
  • Start and stop the unit periodically as the manual directs, but do so only in the same safe outdoor location and never in an enclosed area.
  • Buy an outdoor-rated extension cord with sufficient length and a rating appropriate for the planned load.
  • Test CO alarms monthly and replace batteries or alarms when required.
  • Label the appliances that may be connected and keep the transfer-switch documentation, if installed, available for the electrician and household.
  • Keep the generator manual, approved fuel information and emergency numbers together in a waterproof location.

Make the placement decision in daylight

Walk around the property and identify the nearest doors, windows and vents. Account for basement windows, bathroom or kitchen exhaust vents and openings on neighboring structures. Measure the intended position and cord route now. During an outage, do not move the generator closer because a cord is inconvenient or because weather makes the original position uncomfortable.

What to compare when choosing a portable generator

There is no universally safest model. Compare the characteristics that affect your particular loads and location, then verify every operating limit in the manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison point Questions to answer Why it matters
Automatic CO shutoff Does the model monitor CO and stop automatically at a dangerous level? What conditions trigger it, and how is a shutdown indicated? CPSC recommends asking retailers about automatic high-CO shutoff. It is a backup feature, not permission to operate indoors or closer to openings.
Output and load suitability What are the rated and starting outputs? Can they cover the appliances you need simultaneously? Starting surges from motors and pumps can exceed running demand. Use the model’s stated ratings rather than a generic wattage estimate.
Fuel type and runtime Which fuel does the model accept, how much does it hold and what runtime does the manufacturer state under its test conditions? Fuel availability, storage and refueling frequency affect whether the generator can support a long outage safely.
Operating and weather instructions What clearances, precipitation precautions, ventilation rules and shutdown procedures does the manual specify? Weather protection and setup details vary by design. A cover or accessory approved for one model may be unsafe on another.

Do not choose a model solely because it advertises a CO shutoff. Correct outdoor placement, alarms, safe connections and attentive operation remain necessary.

Common questions and unsafe shortcuts

Situation Safe decision Reason
“Can I run it in the garage with the door open?” No. Move the generator fully outdoors and maintain the required separation from openings. Garages are enclosed or partly enclosed spaces, and an open door does not prevent CO from entering the home.
“Can I put it on the porch or under the carport?” No, unless the manufacturer’s instructions clearly define a location that is not enclosed and still meets every clearance; the listed porch and carport scenarios are not acceptable default locations. Roofs and walls can trap or redirect exhaust, while people remain close to the source.
“Can I run it in the rain?” Only if the owner’s manual gives instructions for the current precipitation and you can follow them without creating an enclosure or shock hazard. Weather requirements differ by model.
“Can I plug it into a wall outlet?” No. Use direct connections through an appropriate outdoor-rated cord, or have a qualified electrician install a transfer switch. A wall-outlet connection can backfeed building and utility wiring.
“The alarm has not sounded; can I keep operating?” Continue only while the generator remains correctly placed and everyone feels well. If an alarm sounds or symptoms appear, evacuate immediately. An alarm is a backup warning, not proof that placement is safe.
“The cord does not reach the safe location.” Obtain a properly rated, longer outdoor cord; do not move the generator closer to a door or window. Distance protects against exhaust exposure, while an unsuitable cord can overheat or fail.

Emergency stop: when to leave without troubleshooting

Leave immediately if a CO alarm sounds, anyone develops headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain or confusion, fuel leaks, the exhaust becomes blocked, wiring overheats, or weather no longer meets the manual’s conditions. Get to fresh air and call 911 or Poison Control. Do not return to switch off or diagnose the generator until responders declare the area safe.

Quick outage checklist

  • Generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents.
  • Exhaust pointed away from buildings and openings.
  • No garage, basement, shed, crawlspace, porch, carport or other enclosed location.
  • CO alarms installed outside sleeping areas and on every floor; batteries tested monthly.
  • Outdoor-rated cord long enough to preserve the separation and rated for the generator and load.
  • No wall-outlet connection or other backfeeding method.
  • Transfer switch installed only by a qualified electrician.
  • Weather operation approved by the owner’s manual.
  • Generator stopped and cooled before any refueling.
  • Everyone knows the symptoms and the fresh-air-and-911 response.
