You can run a Discord bot on a desktop or laptop you already own without paying a separate hosting fee. Keep the computer powered on, awake, connected to the internet, and running the bot program. If it sleeps, shuts down, loses internet, or the program stops, the bot can go offline; a home computer does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 service.
How does running a Discord bot on your computer work?
A Discord bot is an application powered by code that connects to Discord’s API. Discord provides the bot platform and the connection mechanisms; the bot program must run on a computer or other host chosen by its developer. In this setup, your own PC is the host. Discord’s documentation explains the app’s connection options, but it does not promise uptime for a bot running at home.

Most bots use Discord’s persistent Gateway WebSocket to receive real-time events and maintain state. Apps built to handle slash commands and interface components can instead use an HTTP interactions endpoint, which Discord must be able to reach. That architecture still needs an accessible endpoint: it does not make a program on a sleeping or powered-off computer available. If your goal is only to post messages into a channel, a webhook may be sufficient, but it cannot listen for events or respond to interactions like a bot. - The computer: It must remain powered on and awake. Sleep, shutdown, restart, or a power interruption can stop the bot.
- The internet connection: A connection loss can interrupt the bot’s access to Discord.
- The bot process: The program must remain running. A crash or manual stop takes the bot offline until it is started again.
Keeping a machine awake and available may consume electricity and internet service, so “free” here means no separate hosting bill if you already own the computer—not zero operating cost. Automatic startup and crash recovery depend on your operating system and the way the bot is installed. Configure those using current documentation for your OS; the exact steps differ, so there is no universal menu path or command to give here.

How do you set up the bot safely?
- Create or open a Discord application. In the Discord Developer Portal, create an application and use its bot user. Discord’s Getting Started with Discord Apps guide covers the application, bot, installation, scopes, permissions, and intents.
- Protect the bot token. Treat it like a password: do not post it publicly, share it, or commit it to version control. Discord warns that the token authorizes API requests and carries the app’s permissions. If it is exposed, reset or regenerate it in the Developer Portal and update the secret used by your local bot; the guide notes that a token cannot simply be viewed again later.
- Choose the installation context and minimum permissions. For server installation, the guide describes the
botscope; commands use theapplications.commandsscope. Select only the permissions the bot’s features require rather than granting Administrator by default. - Request only the intents the bot needs. Intents determine which Gateway events Discord sends. Some are privileged because they can expose sensitive information, such as presence, member, or message-content data. Enable required privileged intents in the Developer Portal and request them in the code; a mismatch can prevent the connection. Consult Discord’s Gateway documentation and getting-started guide.
- Run the project according to its own instructions. Start the bot using the language and library instructions for that project. There is no single command that works for every bot.
- Keep the host available and plan for recovery. Prevent the computer from sleeping while the bot is needed, and decide how you will restart the program after a shutdown or crash. Verify sleep, startup, and process-supervision instructions against current documentation for your operating system.
What happens if the bot needs privileged intents?
Discord’s guidance reviewed in 2026 says apps with fewer than 10,000 unique users can toggle on the privileged intents they need in the Developer Portal. Apps exceeding 10,000 unique users who can see the app across its servers need review for continued access, and approved access must be reapplied for annually. The threshold is based on unique users, not the number of servers. Because Discord can change these rules, check its current privileged intent review guidance when configuring a growing app.
Do you need to pay for a Discord bot host?
No separate hosting service is required if you run the bot on a computer you already own. The trade-off is responsibility: the machine, power, network connection, and bot process all need to remain available, and you need a recovery plan for interruptions. Remote hosting has provider-specific setup, account, and availability terms; check those terms directly before relying on a free tier. This method avoids that hosting bill but cannot provide a home-host uptime guarantee.

Which account should the bot use?
Use the application’s bot user, not an automated personal Discord account. Discord’s OAuth2 documentation covers bot accounts, and Discord Support’s Automated User Accounts (Self-Bots) policy says not to automate standard user accounts outside the bot or OAuth2 API.
