- Enable live streaming for the channel. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup prompts. If this is the first time the channel is going live, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the live control room and create or select the stream you want the encoder to feed.
- Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. In the encoder’s destination settings, paste the server URL and key into their matching fields. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in shared configuration.
- Configure the source in the cloud service. For a prerecorded loop, upload the videos and set the playback or playlist behavior. For a live production, provide the live input and configure the encoding and output path required by the service.
- Start the encoder or cloud stream, then verify it in YouTube Studio. Check that YouTube receives a stable video and audio signal before relying on the stream for a long run.
Plan for broadcasts, long runtimes, and archives
Continuous feed versus separate event
YouTube’s Live Streaming API represents a broadcast (the event or video resource) separately from a stream (the incoming audio-video transmission and its settings). Its documented 24/7 use case allows an operator to keep a continuous broadcast live while starting a separate interview broadcast bound to the same stream, then complete the interview without stopping the continuous feed. Do not assume one complete archive for a 24/7 feed
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a single complete archive for a stream that runs continuously beyond 12 hours. When a cloud media workflow makes sense
For a camera feed or a custom production where a creator tool is not enough, AWS Elemental MediaLive can ingest and transcode content supplied by upstream systems, then send outputs to configured downstream systems. Troubleshoot common setup problems
- YouTube does not show the stream as live: Confirm live streaming is enabled, the selected broadcast is active, and the encoder has the matching YouTube server URL and stream key. If the channel has never streamed before, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
- The encoder cannot connect: Check that the stream key has not been mistyped, revoked, or replaced in YouTube Studio. Update the encoder if the key changed, and never share the key publicly while troubleshooting.
- A prerecorded loop stops or plays the wrong sequence: Check the uploaded files and playlist order, then confirm the service is configured for continuous playback rather than a single pass.
- A live production has no usable input: MediaLive depends on an upstream source. Verify that source is supplying the expected content and that the configured output and any required origin or packaging components are available.
- You need a complete recording of a long stream: Do not rely on YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive guidance for a 24/7 broadcast. Arrange independent recording and confirm current archive behavior.
Costs and practical limits
Cloud streaming avoids the need to operate a dedicated local server, but managed services and cloud infrastructure have separate account terms, limits, and costs.
