Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAn old PC can loop a YouTube Live playlist in OBS Studio, but looping is only one part of the job: the computer must also decode the video, render the scene, encode a 4K60 stream and sustain the upload. Check those limits before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s current recommended ingest bitrate for 4K60 is 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265; those are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Indian internet connection or PC will work reliably.
What you need to establish first
There are two practical routes: run the playlist locally in OBS, or use hosted infrastructure to avoid keeping an older computer running. Decide based on the PC’s ability to decode and encode the actual files, the connection’s sustained upload performance, and whether you need the stream to continue unattended.

- Source media: note each file’s codec, resolution and frame rate. A 4K60 file can be demanding to decode even when OBS can loop it.
- PC capability: check whether the GPU supports hardware decoding of the source format and whether the installed hardware offers an OBS encoder. A hardware encoder can move encoding work away from the CPU, but does not guarantee the PC can decode the file or handle the whole OBS workload. OBS Media Sources and OBS Hardware Encoding explain these distinctions.
- Upload: measure upload speed, not download speed, and test under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and monitoring stream health.
- Continuous operation: consider heat, power, network interruptions and the maintenance burden of leaving an old PC on around the clock.
Set up the playlist in OBS Studio
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC video source requires VLC to be installed. Install a compatible VLC version for your operating system before adding the source.
- Add the source. In OBS, use Sources → + → VLC Video Source. Name the source, then add the media files to its playlist.
- Enable looping. In the source properties, enable Loop Playlist. OBS will restart the source after its media files finish. This controls playlist playback; it does not ensure your PC can process every file continuously.
- Check decoding. In the VLC source properties, enable Use hardware decoding when available only as an available option, not a guarantee. It helps only if the GPU has a decoder for the source’s format. Test the actual files and watch OBS for rendering or decoding strain.
- Set the scene and audio. Keep the scene as simple as the broadcast requires. Confirm the intended audio source is present, at a usable level and not clipping. Test files with motion and sound similar to the real playlist; a static or silent sample is not a meaningful stress test.
Configure YouTube ingest for 4K60
Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for the output codec you select. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommended ingest bitrates, accessed in 2026; they are not measured requirements for an Indian ISP and do not guarantee viewer playback quality.
Recommended Free Tools
| Output resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 4K / 2160p at 60fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 30fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 60fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
In OBS, choose an encoder actually supported by the installed hardware and software. The available options vary by PC. YouTube recommends CBR, supports up to 60fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for current details and the applicable YouTube Studio stream settings.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Set the output resolution and frame rate to the stream you intend to deliver, then set the bitrate for the selected codec using YouTube’s guidance. A 50 Mbps H.264 recommendation must not be substituted with the 35 Mbps AV1/H.265 figure. For 4K, YouTube says the option to improve for low latency is unavailable.
Use YouTube Studio’s stream key for the intended broadcast and keep it private: anyone with access to the key may be able to send video to that stream. Select the RTMPS server/ingest option in the encoder where supported, enter the stream key in OBS, and start a private or unlisted test before scheduling a public continuous stream.

Test the old PC and connection before relying on them
- Run an upload test. Use a speed test that reports upload performance. YouTube explicitly recommends testing upload bitrate; a strong download result alone says nothing about whether the outgoing stream is stable.
- Start a representative test stream. Use the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, playlist motion and audio planned for the real broadcast. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and OBS statistics.
- Watch for local bottlenecks. Check for dropped or lagged frames, encoder overload, playback stutter and rising temperatures. If the source cannot decode smoothly, lowering output bitrate alone will not fix decoding; test hardware decoding support or reduce the source/output workload.
- Observe longer than a quick preview. A short successful test does not establish 24/7 reliability. Run a longer trial and check that the PC, power and network remain stable under the intended conditions.
- Change one variable at a time. If the stream is unstable, test a lower resolution or frame rate, a supported hardware encoder, or a lower-load source. Recheck YouTube stream health after each change.
Common problems and fixes
- The playlist plays, but the stream stutters: looping works independently of decoding and encoding capacity. Confirm the source codec is supported by hardware decoding, simplify the scene, check OBS statistics, and test a lower output workload.
- OBS reports encoder overload or lagged frames: try an available hardware encoder and verify its output settings. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU work, but it cannot fix an overloaded decoder, weak graphics pipeline or unstable upload.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: confirm the codec-specific bitrate, CBR, keyframe interval and RTMPS configuration. Measure sustained upload again and avoid assuming that a speed-test download figure reflects upload capacity.
- The PC works for a while, then fails: inspect temperatures, power settings and network stability during a longer test. An old system that succeeds briefly may still be unsuitable for unattended continuous operation.
- The video appears at a lower quality to viewers: YouTube’s ingest recommendation is not a promise of viewer-side playback quality. Confirm the stream’s incoming resolution and health in YouTube Studio, and account for processing and playback conditions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the old PC cannot decode, encode or stay online continuously, a cloud-hosted loop is an alternative. StreamNeo is #1 among the options here because it runs the loop from the cloud, supports uploaded video as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera or to other platforms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Upload your recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your home computer and connection do not need to stay on.
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Before looping music, footage or other media, confirm you have the rights or permission needed for a public live broadcast. A playlist feature does not grant streaming rights. YouTube may detect copyrighted material or restrict a stream; check the applicable copyright safety checklist before going live. Also consider whether a channel built around repeated or minimally changed material meets YouTube’s current monetization and reused-content policies; eligibility is separate from the technical ability to keep a stream running.
