To run a 24/7 YouTube video game music radio stream legally, get written permission for every recording and composition you plan to play, covering continuous YouTube streaming, your territories, monetization, and any replay. Then ask the relevant rights owners to add your exact YouTube channel to their Content ID allowlists. A game’s streaming policy, a lack of copyright claims, or another channel playing the same music does not establish that you have those rights.

These checks matter even if the music comes from a game soundtrack. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, and a licensed stream can still be interrupted if its channel has not been allowlisted. The rights and legal rules depend on the catalog and the countries where the stream is available; the U.S. Copyright Office’s Title 17 framework is U.S.-specific, not a worldwide legal opinion.

What you need permission to do

A continuous soundtrack-only broadcast is not automatically covered by permission to play a game, stream gameplay, listen to a soundtrack, or upload a soundtrack album. Ask whether the rights grant covers the precise use you intend: audiovisual livestreaming of the music on YouTube, around the clock, for the relevant territories and term, with monetization if applicable and a retained replay if you plan to keep one.

Music can involve distinct rights in the sound recording and in the underlying musical composition. YouTube’s “Music Rights Management on YouTube” overview describes those separate categories and notes that rights may be administered by different parties. In the United States, Title 17, Chapter 1 of the U.S. Copyright Office’s statute text also treats musical works and sound recordings as distinct subject matter. Neither source identifies the owners of a particular game track.

Clearance question What to confirm
Recording (master) Who controls the exact recording or version you will play, and whether that party grants the proposed YouTube broadcast.
Composition Who controls or administers the music and lyrics, and whether the grant covers the composition’s use in the stream.
Other incorporated music Whether the soundtrack includes third-party songs or other material for which the publisher cannot grant all necessary permissions.
Use and monetization Whether continuous live audiovisual transmission on YouTube is expressly covered, and whether monetization is allowed.
Territory, term, and replay Where the stream may be viewed and for how long, and whether the grant covers a retained on-demand archive.
YouTube Content ID handling Whether the relevant owner will allowlist the exact channel and how it will handle mistaken claims or interruptions.

Depending on the track, relevant parties may include a game publisher, record label, music publisher, composer, performing-rights organization, collecting society, or another rights administrator. Do not assume the game publisher controls every recording and composition in its soundtrack. Confirm who can grant each necessary right for the specific catalog.

How to clear a soundtrack before launch

  1. Define the stream. Make a track-by-track list identifying each game, track, recording or version, intended territory, planned start and end dates, whether the channel will be monetized, and whether viewers can watch a replay afterward. This gives rights holders a concrete use to approve.
  2. Identify the rights administrators. For each track, establish who controls or administers the recording and the composition. Ask the publisher whether it can grant all permissions needed for this use; if not, ask which other parties must approve it. A soundtrack album listing or permission to stream gameplay is not, by itself, evidence that these rights are covered.
  3. Get written permission for the actual format. Request a written grant that expressly covers continuous audiovisual livestreaming on YouTube, the intended territories and term, monetization, and archived or on-demand playback if you want to keep a replay. Verify the grant language with the rights holder. There is no universal game-music license established here that can be assumed to cover every soundtrack.
  4. Request Content ID allowlisting. Give each relevant rights owner the exact identity of your YouTube channel and ask it to add the channel to its allowlist. Keep written confirmation. A license and an allowlist are different: the license is permission from the rights owner; allowlisting helps prevent Content ID from disrupting a stream it recognizes as using that owner’s content.
  5. Test the broadcast and prepare a fallback. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a test stage before broadcast. Use the available test process, but do not treat a clean test or the absence of a match as proof of clearance. Be ready to stop the stream, mute or replace a track, or end the broadcast if a rights issue appears.
  6. Choose an archive policy. If you plan to leave the stream available after it ends, confirm that the written grant covers the retained copy. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the live stream ends when the operator chooses to archive it.
  7. Keep a clearance record. Store the track list, written grants, territories and term, monetization and archive terms, allowlist confirmations, and any claim or dispute correspondence together. This makes it easier to establish what was approved and to respond if a platform issue arises.

What YouTube may do if it detects music

YouTube Help’s “Copyright issues with live streams” page says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the operator to stop streaming it. If the content remains, the stream can be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike may also terminate a stream.

YouTube also warns that a licensed stream can be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted by the rights owner—even when the operator limits the broadcast to territories where it has rights. If a match, warning, claim, interruption, or termination occurs, do not assume that the platform response proves the music was unlicensed, or that a license alone will prevent another interruption. Review the notice, contact the relevant rights holder about the allowlist or claim, and follow YouTube’s process where appropriate. The rights permission and the platform’s Content ID handling are separate matters.

Why a game’s policy may not cover a 24/7 music channel

YouTube Help’s “What kind of content can I monetize?” guidance says creators need commercial-use rights granted by the video-game publisher’s license to monetize game content. It also notes that some publisher agreements may not grant commercial rights for videos showing extended gameplay. That guidance does not create a blanket license for a soundtrack-only radio stream: the proposed use still needs to be checked against the publisher’s actual terms and the separate rights in the music.

A game’s “stream-safe” setting, if it has one, may avoid playing certain tracks. It does not by itself establish that every remaining audio element can be rebroadcast continuously as a radio channel. Check the setting’s scope and the publisher’s current policy directly, then clear the tracks that remain in the stream.

Is running the stream from the cloud enough?

No streaming setup, including a cloud service, grants music rights or guarantees that YouTube will accept a broadcast. Clear the catalog and resolve Content ID allowlisting first. Once you have permission, you can choose how to keep the stream running; a cloud setup changes where the video is played from, not who owns the music or what your license permits.

What remains specific to your catalog and countries

There is no basis to assume that a particular publisher grants standalone radio-stream rights, that any specific rights owner will allowlist your channel, or that one permission covers every territory. The required parties, terms, and legal rules depend on the actual tracks and distribution plan. Identify your audience territories, verify the written grants for those places, and consult qualified counsel for the relevant jurisdictions if you need legal advice.
