You can use a Mac mini running OBS as the encoder for a continuous YouTube Live stream, but OBS alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. You also need an adequately capable Mac mini, stable sustained upload bandwidth, dependable power for both the Mac and network equipment, and a plan for long-running YouTube sessions and archives.
What you need before going live
- A Mac mini running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later. OBS supports Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but its baseline requirements do not guarantee that a particular scene, resolution, frame rate or encoder will perform reliably. OBS system requirements (dated August 25, 2021) explain that the actual workload affects what the system can handle.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned start. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers creating a stream.
- A reliable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the chosen stream settings, not merely a high download speed.
- A suitable power arrangement for the Mac mini and the network equipment needed to keep the internet connection up.
Apple’s India specifications for the currently listed Mac mini family include Ethernet and hardware-accelerated video encoding. Check the exact model’s specifications because features can change between releases. Apple’s listed 155 W maximum continuous power is a maximum specification, not measured OBS power draw or a basis for estimating UPS runtime. Apple Mac mini specifications for India.

Set up YouTube Live and OBS
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. If this is your first time, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, copy the server URL and key for the selected stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, share it, or include it in a screen recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Select YouTube as the service and enter the stream key; if your OBS setup asks for a server URL, use the URL supplied by YouTube. Keep the key private.
- Build and check the scene. Add the video, images, text, audio sources or other elements your broadcast needs. Confirm that audio is present and that movement or transitions behave as expected. A complex scene can demand more from the Mac than a static image.
- Start with conservative output settings. Configure the video resolution and frame rate, then set the encoder output bitrate and rate control. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS as YouTube recommends. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate, and to the upload capacity you have actually measured; there is no single safe bitrate for every Indian connection.
- Test before relying on it. Run a representative stream with the same kind of audio and movement as the real program. Watch OBS for dropped or lagged frames and YouTube’s stream health indicators. If the connection or encoding is unstable, lower the bitrate, resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or address the underlying network or performance issue before treating the setup as ready.
- Begin the broadcast and verify it in YouTube. Start streaming in OBS, then check the Live Control Room for incoming video, audio and stream health. Confirm the public or scheduled viewing page also plays as intended.
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are the authority for the ingest settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but that does not compensate for an unstable source feed. Its guidance recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate; test under conditions representative of the stream rather than relying on a momentary peak.
Choose settings from measured upload and workload
Decide on resolution and frame rate first, then use YouTube’s corresponding bitrate guidance. Compare candidate settings against sustained upload capacity with headroom for normal fluctuations. Test with the actual Mac mini, encoder choice, scene complexity, audio and motion you intend to leave running. OBS compatibility is not a performance guarantee: requirements vary with resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene workload.

For the network path, use the Mac mini’s Ethernet connection to a suitable router or switch where practical. Wired Ethernet can make the local link more dependable, but it cannot fix insufficient ISP upload bandwidth or an upstream outage. Monitor both OBS and YouTube stream health during a representative extended test, and change one relevant setting at a time so you can identify what improves stability.
Keep the stream and internet connection powered
A 24/7 setup is only as continuous as its weakest link: computer, router, modem or optical network terminal (ONT), ISP connection, and any other equipment required for the broadcast. A UPS can provide ride-through for equipment connected to it, but runtime depends on the combined real load and the runtime you need. Include the Mac mini and the network equipment; include a display only if it must remain on. A UPS cannot keep an ISP’s upstream equipment powered, nor can it prevent an ISP outage.

Do not size a UPS from Apple’s 155 W maximum continuous power specification. That figure is not an OBS workload measurement. Base sizing on the actual combined load and desired runtime, and check whether the internet path remains available during a local power interruption.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that threshold, so do not assume a single uninterrupted session will automatically produce a complete archive. Decide how you will manage long-running sessions and whether you need separate recordings; verify the relevant YouTube Live Control Room behavior for your channel and workflow. Keep copyright in mind when choosing music, video and other material for a continuous stream. You need the rights or permissions appropriate to the material and use; a 24/7 format does not exempt a stream from YouTube’s copyright rules. Also consider YouTube’s reused-content rules if you intend to monetize: the fact that content can be streamed continuously does not itself establish eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel before building a monetization plan.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that OBS is using the selected stream’s current key and URL, that the correct service is selected, and that the stream is started in OBS. If the key may have been exposed or replaced, copy the current one from YouTube Studio.
- Stream health shows connection problems: Run an upload test, check for competing uploads or other traffic, and lower the bitrate if sustained capacity is insufficient. A fast download result does not prove adequate upload capacity.
- OBS reports dropped frames: Investigate the connection between OBS and YouTube. Test Ethernet where available, check the router and ISP path, and reduce bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain them.
- Frames are lagged or the picture stutters despite a healthy connection: Treat this as a possible encoding or scene workload limit. Simplify the scene or test a lower resolution, frame rate or less demanding encoder configuration on the actual Mac mini.
- The stream stops during a power event: Check that the Mac mini and required router/ONT equipment are all supported by the power plan. Reassess the combined load and required runtime; a UPS on the computer alone may not preserve the connection.
- You cannot find a complete archive: Check the stream duration and YouTube’s archive behavior. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; plan separately for a 24/7 session and any recordings you need.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube stream made from uploaded videos without leaving a Mac mini, OBS computer or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
