You can run a YouTube live stream from a Mac by connecting an encoder—such as compatible streaming software—to a stream URL and stream key created in YouTube Studio. For a true 24/7 broadcast, the Mac, encoder, network connection and source all need to keep working; YouTube’s setup guidance does not certify a particular Mac or guarantee an uninterrupted stream. Plan separately for local recording, failures and YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit.
What you need before going live
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned start. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Mac-compatible encoder. YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders; check the selected software’s current macOS requirements. OBS provides an official Help Portal, but compatibility and performance depend on your Mac and setup.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen stream settings. A speed test is a starting point, not a substitute for testing the actual broadcast.
- A source to stream, such as video, a camera, microphone or a combination. The encoder turns that source into a feed for YouTube; camera and audio equipment are production choices, not universal requirements.
- Enough local storage if you want a recording backup. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive, but does not require a particular storage device or capacity.
Create the YouTube stream and connect your Mac
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube will provide a stream URL and a stream key. The exact Studio layout can change; follow the current encoder setup instructions.
- In the encoder, choose YouTube or a custom RTMP/RTMPS destination as appropriate, then enter the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it functions like a credential and should only go into the intended encoder.
- Configure the source, video and audio in the encoder. Connect any camera or microphone you plan to use and confirm that the encoder is receiving them before starting.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube Studio’s stream preview and health indicators. Confirm that picture and sound are present and that the upload remains stable before treating the stream as live and unattended.
Use conservative encoder settings, then test
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video codecs, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps. That is a platform recommendation, not a promise that your internet connection or Mac can sustain it. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Choose resolution and frame rate according to the content and the upload speed your connection can reliably maintain. Higher settings need more upload capacity. YouTube transcodes incoming streams into other formats for viewers, so do not assume that sending a higher resolution will make every viewer receive that exact format.
- Run a speed test and leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s best-case upload result.
- Test with representative motion and audio: a static screen can hide problems that appear during a full-motion segment.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health while testing; lower the bitrate or video settings if the connection cannot hold them steadily.
- Test the exact Mac, encoder, source and network you intend to leave running. Official platform guidance does not establish a Mac-specific 24/7 reliability guarantee.
Plan for archives, recording and interruptions
A continuous stream and a dependable archive are different goals. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the recording matters, keep a local recording as a backup and plan how you will retain it. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a 24/7 channel, decide in advance whether you will run one long broadcast or end and restart it in segments. Segmenting may make archive management more practical, but it is not a guarantee of a seamless handoff or uninterrupted viewing. Test the chosen schedule and confirm what viewers see during transitions.
Also test what happens if the Mac sleeps, restarts, loses power, the encoder stops, or the internet drops. Disable sleep only if appropriate for your Mac and operating conditions, keep the machine adequately powered and ventilated, and check whether the encoder can reconnect after an interruption. Do not assume automatic recovery unless you have tested it with your specific setup. An external drive can be one way to hold local recordings, but YouTube does not mandate an SSD or specify a capacity.

Choose software or a hardware encoder
| Option | Useful when | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder on the Mac | You want to use the Mac as the encoding computer and have its source and controls in one place. | Confirm compatibility with your macOS version, test CPU load and stream stability, and establish recording and restart plans. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Your production calls for a dedicated encoder rather than software running on the Mac. | Confirm that it accepts your intended sources, works with the YouTube stream URL and key, and fits your budget and recovery plan. |
YouTube documents both categories, but its guidance does not provide a tested Mac-versus-hardware reliability comparison. Neither category is a guarantee of 24/7 uptime; select based on your inputs and test the whole chain.
Protect rights and understand monetization limits
You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast your content, including music. YouTube’s livestream terms place that responsibility on the content provider.

Being live continuously does not guarantee monetization. Live streams remain subject to channel monetization policies, including originality and authenticity requirements. YouTube says its policy clarification dated July 15, 2025, renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under its originality requirements. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around repeated programming.
Troubleshooting a Mac YouTube stream
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Verify the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the selected destination, and check that the encoder is actually streaming. If needed, retrieve the current key in YouTube Studio and enter it privately.
- Health warnings or dropped frames: Test upload speed under the same network conditions, reduce bitrate or resolution, and run another test with motion. YouTube’s 1080p30 H.264 recommendation is 10 Mbps, but your actual connection may need lower settings.
- Video arrives but audio does not: Check the encoder’s selected audio source, input levels and audio codec settings; test with the microphone or source you will use live.
- The Mac or encoder stops during a long run: Check power, sleep behavior, ventilation, system load and network continuity. Test reconnect behavior and decide how a human will be alerted or restart the stream; do not assume an unattended Mac will recover.
- The broadcast is missing from archives: Check stream duration. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; use local recording when retention is important.
- A stream is restricted or monetization is affected: Review channel live-stream eligibility and restrictions, confirm rights for all audio and video, and assess whether the content meets YouTube’s originality and authenticity rules.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded video without leaving the Mac on, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube only.
