You can keep prerecorded video live on YouTube while your computer is off by running a playlist and encoder on a cloud virtual machine (VM), then sending that feed to YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube must be enabled for the channel, and the cloud encoder needs the stream’s current server URL and key. The alternative is a managed playout service that handles the continuous broadcast for you. These are different from Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, whose documented outputs are HLS or DASH files in Cloud Storage rather than a direct YouTube playout feed.
Choose the cloud setup that matches your needs
For a basic continuous YouTube broadcast, the most direct do-it-yourself route is a cloud VM running a media playlist and an encoder such as FFmpeg. It sends one live feed to YouTube. You manage the server, process supervision, and recovery.
A managed playout service instead takes responsibility for playlist scheduling and continuous delivery through its own service. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a third, distinct product: it accepts SRT or RTMP input, transcodes it, and saves HLS or DASH output to Cloud Storage. It is intended for a managed video pipeline, not as a turnkey process that pushes a loop directly to YouTube.

Check YouTube eligibility before setting up the server
YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Live content remains subject to YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Before scheduling a broadcast, make sure the video and audio are yours or that you have the rights to use them. A continuous stream is still subject to copyright rules and YouTube’s policies; a cloud server does not make unlicensed music, films, or other material permissible. Do not assume that looping or adding a live label avoids policy or monetization review.
Set up a VM-based stream
The broad workflow is the same across cloud providers, though console labels and available regions differ. Choose an India region if proximity and data location matter to you; size the machine for the actual job rather than assuming every stream needs a GPU.

- Provision a VM and storage. Select a cloud region and an instance that can handle the intended workload. Attach persistent storage for the media and, if needed, an independent recording. Check provider charges for compute, disk, public IP, outbound transfer, and any accelerator separately.
- Put the media on the server. Use a file or playlist that can continue seamlessly after each clip ends. Confirm that the files are readable by the account running the encoder and that the playlist’s end-of-file behavior is suitable for continuous playback.
- Create or schedule the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream. The key is a credential that lets an encoder send a feed to your channel; YouTube explains this in its stream settings documentation.
- Configure the encoder. Point FFmpeg or another encoder at the playlist and the exact destination shown in Live Control Room. Use RTMPS where supported, with the supplied hostname, application path, and stream key. Do not assume a generic endpoint path or paste the key into a public script, repository, screenshot, or support post.
- Keep the process supervised. Run the encoder under a process supervisor or service manager configured to restart it after failure. Configure an alert for process exit and ingest loss, and document how to restart the service and rotate the stream key. These are operational recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Start the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Monitor the server and the incoming feed after launch; a process that is running does not necessarily mean YouTube is receiving healthy audio and video.
Set the ingest protocol and encoding settings
RTMPS endpoint and key
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which tunnels RTMP through SSL/TLS. Its RTMPS requirements specify port 443 and correct host and path handling, including preserving the hostname for SNI authentication. Use the exact RTMPS destination shown in Live Control Room rather than reconstructing one. Keep the stream key secret and reset it if it is exposed.
Codec, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its published H.264 bitrate examples are:

These are YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VM, media file, or Indian region can sustain the feed. Match the output resolution and frame rate to the source and encoder capacity. If a file is already encoded in the format and quality you want, relaying or remuxing it may avoid the work of transcoding. Re-encoding consumes more CPU or GPU capacity; the right instance size depends on the media, codec, output settings, and whether you transcode.
Estimate the cost without confusing unlike services
There is no substantiated all-in monthly price for a basic always-on VM in India. Price the exact region and expected hours using the provider’s calculator, including compute, persistent disk, public IP, outbound transfer, and any GPU or separate encoding service. A low compute quote alone is not the total cost of a continuous stream.

Google Cloud lists Mumbai (asia-south1) as a supported region for its Live Stream API. Its page says channel charges accrue while active even if no input is present; usage is hourly, rounded up to the nearest minute after a 10-minute minimum, and varies with configured input, output resolution, and features. The listed H.264 HD rates are $0.14 per active hour for input and $0.45 per active hour for output. Those are API resource charges, not a VM price or a quote for pushing directly to YouTube. The API’s documented architecture accepts SRT or RTMP and produces HLS or DASH in Cloud Storage; Google’s best practices prefer SRT over RTMP when the encoder supports it.
Do not treat viewer-delivery examples as a cost estimate for this workflow. AWS currently illustrates about $69.74 for a one-hour 540p managed event with approximately 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia), including encoding/packaging and distribution; that is not a monthly VM-to-YouTube estimate, and regional availability matters. See the AWS solution page for the scope of that example.

Keep the stream healthy and plan for archives
A 24/7 watch page and a single uninterrupted YouTube archive are not the same thing. YouTube says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If replay matters, schedule shorter sessions and keep an independent recording rather than relying on one continuous archive. Test session boundaries for your channel’s viewer experience and notifications; there is no universal schedule established for every channel.
Monitor encoder process status, CPU and memory, available disk space, output bitrate and frame rate, and YouTube’s stream health. Keep a separate recording if you need a dependable copy. A single VM is a single point of failure; a second encoder or backup input can improve resilience but adds configuration and cost. Google’s managed Live Stream API supports a backup input, but that feature does not turn its documented HLS/DASH output into direct YouTube playout.
Troubleshoot common failures
