To keep recorded Orthodox Christian services playing on YouTube around the clock, run the recordings through a playback system and encoder that continuously sends a live feed to a YouTube broadcast. YouTube does not provide a setting that automatically loops recordings indefinitely. Before launch, confirm the channel is eligible to stream, clear the rights and consent for every recording, test the feed, and decide how you will handle outages and archives.
What you need for a continuous YouTube stream
The setup has two parts: a playback source that repeats the parish’s recordings, and an encoder that sends that video and audio to YouTube. YouTube receives the encoder feed as an incoming live stream; viewers watch the associated broadcast. The playback and encoding must keep running and keep sending data for the broadcast to continue.

You can use a local computer or a hosted service for that work. YouTube’s documentation explains how to send and monitor an encoder feed, but does not prescribe a particular computer, provider, or automatic 24/7 playlist feature. Whichever setup you choose, plan who will notice and respond if playback, encoding, power, or internet access fails.

Check rights for each recording
Make a playlist only from recordings the parish is authorized to stream. Keep a record of who controls each recording and the rights to its music, chant, images, readings, and other incorporated material. YouTube places responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider, including music rights. A parish-owned copy, an old recording, or a general music license should not be assumed to cover continuous public streaming, every territory, monetization if applicable, or an archived copy. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match may interrupt or terminate a stream; even licensed material may be interrupted unless the rights holder adds the channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Confirm the rights and any required allowlisting before relying on a recording for a continuous broadcast.
Make a local plan for filming and privacy
Follow your jurisdiction’s requirements and your diocese’s policies. Orthodox Church in America (OCA) guidance recommends informing parishioners when worship is filmed, posting signs when services are distributed online or through broadcast media, and obtaining signed media releases from adults and from guardians of minors who may be filmed. It also makes clear that the parish should consider how people can avoid appearing. Establish a clear local process, keep sensitive pastoral situations outside the camera frame, and consider camera framing or no-camera areas for those who do not wish to appear. Confirm YouTube channel eligibility
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to use live streaming. Check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio before scheduling the project; eligibility is tied to the actual channel, not simply to the parish’s possession of recordings. Set up and test the encoder broadcast
- Prepare continuous playback. Put the authorized recordings in the order you want them played and configure a playback system to repeat them. Verify the transition between files, audio levels, and that the source does not stop after one pass.
- Create or select a broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast. Copy its stream key and ingestion details into the encoder. Treat the key as a password: restrict access and do not publish it.
- Set encoder output. For ordinary parish programming, YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the parish’s stable upload connection can sustain; YouTube’s recommended bitrate range varies with codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube transcodes live streams for different playback formats. Check the current encoder settings guidance before configuring the encoder, since platform recommendations can change.
- Send a private test feed. Start playback and the encoder, then inspect the incoming preview and stream-health messages in the Live Control Room. Test representative movement and audio, including quiet passages, and confirm the stream remains stable through transitions. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- Start and monitor the broadcast. When the preview and health status are satisfactory, start the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Assign someone to respond to a stopped encoder, internet outage, copyright warning, or silent or broken source; a continuous stream still needs an operational response plan.
Schedule the stream and plan for the archive
Schedule the broadcast in advance and share a stable channel or broadcast link with parishioners. Decide whether live chat is appropriate; if you enable it, assign moderation and set expectations for respectful participation. YouTube’s production guide describes scheduling and management of upcoming and past live streams.

Do not assume that a 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete YouTube archive. A Google/YouTube production guide says streams up to 12 hours are automatically archived and recommends recording longer streams separately for manual upload. That guide is not a guarantee of current behavior for every account. If a complete archive matters, record the program separately or use shorter broadcasts, and check the Live Control Room’s current behavior before depending on an archive.

A local computer gives the parish direct control, but playback and encoding depend on that machine, its power, and its internet connection staying available. A hosted option can avoid leaving a parish computer running, but compare who monitors interruptions and restarts, what happens during connectivity problems, how stream-key access is controlled, what support is available, and how rights and consent are managed. These operational responsibilities matter more than simply starting the feed.

Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has not had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Review the channel’s live status in YouTube Studio.
- YouTube receives no signal: Confirm playback and encoder are running, the correct broadcast’s stream key and ingestion details are entered, and the encoder is sending. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream is unstable or drops: Check the encoder’s health messages, the upload connection, and whether the selected bitrate exceeds what the connection can sustain. Verify the recommended codec, constant bitrate, and keyframe interval in YouTube’s current settings guidance.
- The broadcast is interrupted by a copyright match: Identify the matched material, stop using it until rights are confirmed, and contact the relevant rights holder about permissions and Content ID allowlisting. A general license or possession of the recording is not proof that this particular rebroadcast is covered.
- Viewers hear silence or see a frozen image: Check the playback source at the affected point, the encoder’s audio and video input, and the YouTube preview. Test transitions and quiet sections before public launch, and arrange an operator to respond if the source fails.
- The full day is missing from the archive: YouTube’s production guide describes automatic archiving for streams up to 12 hours, not a complete archive of a longer broadcast. Use a separate recording or shorter broadcasts if the complete archive is important, and verify current account behavior.
Keep the stream pastoral as well as technical
The OCA’s guidance offers a useful pastoral principle: “One of the most important principles to keep in mind when live-streaming is that we want to draw the faithful into prayer and worship, and not just provide something for them to watch.” Build the camera, consent, moderation, and recording policies around the parish’s worship and the people taking part, not only around keeping a feed online.
