To run public-domain films as a continuous YouTube live stream, loop a local video file with FFmpeg, encode it to YouTube’s supported live format, and send it to the RTMPS ingest address and stream key from YouTube Studio. The computer, network connection, and media storage must remain available for the stream to continue; FFmpeg does not by itself guarantee recovery from a crash or lost connection. First confirm that the exact film, restoration, soundtrack, and territory are cleared for your use.
Before you stream: confirm the rights and prepare the film
Check the exact copy, not just the film title
A film described as public domain is not automatically safe to stream in every version or territory. Check the source and rights information for the precise file, including its restoration and soundtrack. Internet Archive cautions that its rights labels are supplied by uploaders and may be inaccurate; its U.S.-specific guidance also warns that a restored print or later soundtrack may carry separate rights. Its generalization that U.S. films completed in 1923 or earlier are generally public domain does not settle rights in later enhancements or in other countries. See Internet Archive’s Movies and Videos guide as a screening aid, not a definitive clearance ruling.

Download a file you can play locally
Use a local video file that you have the right to broadcast, rather than depending on a browser player during continuous playout. Check that the file decodes and that its audio and video play correctly before going live. Internet Archive notes that some formats cannot be played in its web player and provides download links for those files; a successful download or playback does not establish that the content is rights-cleared.

Enable YouTube Live and get the encoder details
-
Enable live streaming on the YouTube channel if it is not already enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
#1 Best Overall
-
Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create an encoder stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the live setup details.
-
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it, share it, or leave it visible in screenshots. Put the current server URL and key into FFmpeg’s output destination as described below; do not guess an ingest URL.
See YouTube’s current instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder. For encoder settings, follow its current bitrate and resolution recommendations, since the appropriate values depend on resolution and frame rate.

This is a configuration template, not a tested command. Replace the file name, ingest URL, and stream key with your own values. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the listed encoders, then test privately or unlisted before publishing.

What the important options do
-
-repaces reading from the file in real time.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely. These are input options, so put them before-i, as in the example. -
-c:v libx264encodes H.264 video;-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a commonly supported pixel format. The example sets output to 30 frames per second with-r 30. -
-b:vand-maxrateset the target and maximum video bitrate in this example;-bufsizesets the rate-control buffer. YouTube’s current table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended video bitrate for H.264 at 1080p30. The example’s 5 Mbps target is a starting point at that resolution and frame rate, not a universal recommendation. Use the current YouTube table and the source file’s actual resolution and frame rate to choose settings.PerformanceWindows Errors? -g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which is a 2-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds; if you change frame rate, set the GOP accordingly.Rank #3
-
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes AAC audio at the example’s bitrate and sample rate. Check that the chosen file has the audio you expect, including levels and channel layout. -
-f flvselects the output container used for this RTMP-family ingest. The destination uses RTMPS, which YouTube recommends as the secure extension to RTMP. Copy the actual server URL and key from Live Control Room rather than using the placeholder literally.
FFmpeg documents the loop option in its command-line documentation and RTMP-family transport in its protocol documentation. Confirm the installed version’s options and the input file before relying on a long-running process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test the stream and keep it supervised
-
Start with a private or unlisted stream and confirm that YouTube receives both audio and video. Check the picture, sound, cadence, and stream-health messages in Live Control Room.
-
Make the test representative of the real film. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
-
For continuous operation, keep the computer, network connection, and media storage available. Arrange your own process monitoring, alerts, and restart procedure for FFmpeg exits or network failures; YouTube’s encoder instructions describe stopping an encoder stream but do not promise that FFmpeg will recover unattended.
Plan for copyright checks and stream archives
Public-domain status does not prevent a live interruption
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause the video to be replaced by a placeholder and a warning; if the matched content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. YouTube also says that licensed third-party content may require the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. A public-domain claim, an archive label, or a successful test does not guarantee that Content ID will not act.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not rely on automatic archiving for streams over 12 hours
YouTube automatically archives live streams only when they are under 12 hours. A longer continuous broadcast may not produce a complete automatic VOD. If an archive matters, schedule shorter sessions and preserve the original file or make a separate recording.
Costs and practical limits of a home FFmpeg setup
FFmpeg itself is the encoder in this workflow, but a 24/7 setup still depends on a continuously running computer, stable upload capacity, reliable access to the media files, and a plan for failures. Before choosing a home machine or hosted computer, compare sustained encoding capacity, network stability, storage access, uptime, and restart handling. There is no single hardware configuration established here as best for every file or connection. An external hard drive is optional local storage; the needed capacity depends on the size of your film collection.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer at home to stay on, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video in the cloud, with no home computer or connection required. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo plans or start the free day.
