Riot Games explicitly warns against simply reusing esports matches or other players’ VODs with only light commentary. An encoder or cloud service can keep a stream running; neither gives you permission to show the footage.
Can you run a 24/7 League of Legends VOD stream?
Technically, yes: YouTube supports encoder-based live streams, and a continuous playlist can be sent as a live feed. Whether you may stream the particular footage is a separate question. Riot’s general fan-use policy says, “Don’t just rip off or add some light commentary to existing content (e.g., esports matches, other players’ vods).” That warning makes a bare loop of esports matches or other players’ recordings a poor basis for a channel.

The available policies do not decide the rights to any particular match recording, event, territory, or channel. Before transmission, identify who controls the recording and obtain and document the permissions that apply to it. This includes checking the rights for broadcast audio, music, graphics, and commentary, as well as any event-specific broadcast rules. Riot’s Terms of Service treat game recordings and broadcasts as Game Content and direct users to its fan-use policy; regional publisher terms may differ.

Permission must cover the actual recording
Do not assume that a public VOD, a game client, or the fact that a recording is already on YouTube makes it available for rebroadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed to exploit the livestream, including relevant music rights. Keep written permission or other applicable licensing records with the files, and confirm that the permission covers the proposed continuous YouTube use.

Adding commentary does not automatically clear rights
Riot’s policy allows certain community uses subject to its conditions, but it specifically rejects simple reuse or light commentary on esports matches and other players’ VODs. YouTube also evaluates reused content for meaningful original commentary, substantial modification, or educational or entertainment value. Those are distinct tests: a substantial analysis format does not itself grant copyright permission, and a license does not by itself guarantee monetization.
A repeating playlist is a monetization risk
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy update renamed its repetitious-content policy “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible for monetization; YouTube said its reused-content policy had not changed. A channel that simply repeats match footage is therefore a poor fit for monetization even if it has separately resolved the footage rights. Riot’s limited exceptions for qualifying community projects, such as passive ad revenue for some individual projects, do not remove the originality requirements or guarantee YouTube Partner Program eligibility or revenue.

Set up the YouTube stream, if your footage is cleared
The following is the basic encoder workflow. It describes delivery setup, not rights clearance. Use a streaming encoder or playout system that can send your authorized video and audio as a continuous feed.

- Inventory and clear every source file. Record the source and rights holder for each match VOD and identify included broadcast audio, music, graphics, and commentary. Keep the applicable permissions and event rules with the media. Exclude any file whose streaming rights you cannot establish.
- Build an original, rights-compliant program. Avoid making the format a 24/7 replay loop with only light commentary. If your license permits the use, plan substantial analysis or educational commentary that gives viewers a distinct reason to watch. Treat originality and licensing as separate requirements.
- Create a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose the encoder-based streaming workflow and create the stream. Use the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream in your encoder’s corresponding server and key fields.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a private credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or place it in a public playlist or project file.
- Configure the encoder for the source and inspect the preview. Set the encoder’s video and audio input to the cleared program. Use the supported settings presented for your encoder and YouTube workflow rather than assuming one resolution or bitrate fits every source and connection. Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, and playback before starting the public feed.
- Start the feed and monitor it. Begin sending from the encoder, confirm the stream is live in Live Control Room, and monitor audio, video, and interruptions. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast; it may warn you to stop using that content, and a stream may be terminated following a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.
- Keep a local recording if the archive matters. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive as backup. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not assume that dividing a long broadcast into separate sessions guarantees a complete archive.
Plan for continuity without sacrificing the archive
A single uninterrupted 24-hour session has practical trade-offs: the archive may be missing, and viewers may not be able to rewind through the whole stream. If preserving the program matters, record a local copy and plan the session length around the 12-hour archive and DVR limits. Those limits do not guarantee that any particular schedule will be archived completely.

Continuous operation also needs monitoring and recovery planning. YouTube’s setup guidance emphasizes checking stream quality and local archive files. Decide who will notice a failed feed, how the encoder or playout process will be restarted, and how you will confirm that the replacement feed is reaching Live Control Room. A streaming service cannot repair a rights problem, even if it restores delivery after an interruption.
