A computer or hardware encoder must stay powered and connected for a do-it-yourself setup. Plan for shorter sessions if you need YouTube archives: streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements.
- A 4K-capable encoder path: software running on a computer or a dedicated hardware encoder. The encoder must sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec for long periods; YouTube’s setup documentation does not certify specific computers or devices.
- A dependable upload connection with capacity beyond the video bitrate you select, plus power and a plan for recovering from a network, encoder or power failure.
- A finished video-and-audio source, such as a long recording or a loop, with rights cleared for YouTube live use and any archive you intend to keep.
Prepare the forest video and clear its rights
Decide whether the picture will be a static scene, a long continuous recording or a loop. For a loop, check the transition between its end and beginning, and listen for abrupt changes in the ambience. Prepare the complete feed—including every sound, image and any music—before connecting the encoder.

You must have the necessary rights for the live broadcast and any resulting archive. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions cover rights obligations; its live-stream restriction guidance describes copyright-related restrictions. Use material you own or content licensed for the intended uses, and keep license records. A sound recording that seems ambient or freely available is not automatically cleared for rebroadcast.
Choose 2160p30 or 2160p60 and configure the encoder
YouTube’s surfaced encoder guidance recommends these H.264 bitrates for 4K. They are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection or encoder will hold a stable stream.

| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p30 | 30 Mbps | Lower frame rate and bitrate than 2160p60; a natural starting point for a mostly still forest scene. |
| 2160p60 | 35 Mbps | Can provide smoother motion, with greater encoder and upload demands. |
These figures are YouTube’s surfaced H.264 recommendations; codec-specific ranges vary. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, so check the current table and the row for your codec and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance before configuring a different codec.
- Set a constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where supported.
- For 2160p, expect normal latency: YouTube does not offer low-latency mode at 4K.
- Test the selected resolution, frame rate and audio with representative motion before committing to a continuous broadcast. Leave dependable upload headroom above the target video bitrate rather than treating the target as a safe connection speed.
Create the YouTube live event and connect your encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow for the current interface.
- Choose the applicable stream key and protocol. Copy the stream URL and key into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
- Start the encoder output and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room preview. Confirm the image, audio and stream health before selecting Go live.
- Open the public watch page from a separate device or browser session to check that viewers can reach the event and hear the intended mix.
Plan session lengths around archives and DVR
A single uninterrupted broadcast is not a dependable way to create a full-day YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including at 1440p and 2160p, but warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” See YouTube’s archive guidance.

If the archive matters, schedule sessions shorter than 12 hours, deliberately restart between them, and keep a separate local recording. Account for the short gap or transition a restart may create on the public stream. YouTube also says DVR may be unavailable or limited for streams longer than 12 hours, so viewers should not be promised the ability to rewind to any point in a continuous broadcast; see YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Keep the broadcast healthy and recover from failures
Continuous streaming needs ongoing operational attention. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring the broadcast and checking local archive files.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Watch YouTube stream health, encoder status, picture and audio throughout the session.
- Check that the local recording exists, continues to grow as expected and can be opened; file growth alone does not prove the recording is intact.
- Have a recovery procedure for loss of internet, encoder crashes and power loss. Test any backup encoder or failover path you decide to use; redundancy adds cost and operational complexity, and is not a universal requirement.
- Test the full workflow before a public 24/7 launch, including a restart and recovery, rather than assuming a successful short preview proves sustained operation.
Choose a do-it-yourself setup or cloud playback
Computer or hardware encoder
A local encoder gives you direct control over the feed and can support a separate local recording, but the computer or encoder, power and internet connection must remain available. Choose equipment only after checking the encoder maker’s requirements for your codec and frame rate, along with cooling and sustained workload. A dedicated computer is one possible setup, not a YouTube requirement.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
