How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a VPS Under ₹500 per Month

Possibly—but a VPS price below ₹500 a month does not by itself make a 24/7 YouTube stream fit that budget. Check the monthly transfer allowance against your chosen bitrate, plus taxes, overages and any storage charges. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, a 30-day stream uses about 2.592 decimal TB of video payload at 720p30 or 4.536 decimal TB at 1080p30, before audio and protocol overhead. A VPS that relays compatible, already-encoded video is less demanding than one that has to encode or transcode continuously.

Work out the transfer requirement before choosing a VPS

A continuous stream sends data every second, so the monthly transfer allowance is often the budget’s limiting factor. YouTube’s official live encoder settings recommend the following H.264 video bitrates:

Stream format Recommended video bitrate Video payload over 30 days
720p30 8 Mbps About 2.592 decimal TB
720p60 8 Mbps About 2.592 decimal TB
1080p30 14 Mbps About 4.536 decimal TB
1080p60 17 Mbps About 5.508 decimal TB

The payload estimates are calculations using the listed video bitrates, 30 days, and 8 bits per byte. They exclude audio and protocol overhead; the provider may also account for transfer differently. Check whether the VPS allowance is stated in GB or GiB, whether it covers outbound traffic to YouTube, and what happens when you exceed it. YouTube’s settings are published in its official live encoder guide.

Compare the advertised price with the all-in monthly cost

DigitalOcean’s official Droplet pricing table, accessed in 2026, lists plans at $4/month with 500 GiB transfer, $12/month with 2,000 GiB, and $18/month with 3,000 GiB. These are USD examples, not a quote for an India checkout or a guarantee that a particular plan suits a workload. The listed transfer on those examples is below the calculated 30-day video payload for the 720p30 recommendation, even before audio and overhead.

Use this checklist when you compare providers. Do not treat a low introductory or headline VM price as the recurring all-in cost:

  • Region: Confirm which data-centre region you can select and assess the connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Do not assume a particular region or connection quality without checking.
  • Transfer: Find the monthly outbound allowance, its units, how traffic is counted, and the price or policy for exceeding it.
  • Compute: Match CPU and memory to the actual job: relaying an existing encode or encoding/transcoding in real time.
  • Billing: Check the renewal price, billing period, taxes, currency conversion and any storage or backup fees at checkout.
  • Operations: Determine how you will detect a stopped process, restart it, monitor YouTube stream health and respond if the server or connection fails.

Choose a relay workflow or an encoding workflow

Relay compatible, pre-encoded media

If your source file is already encoded in a format and settings suitable for the stream, a copy/relay workflow can send it without real-time re-encoding. This reduces the VPS’s CPU workload, but does not reduce the video bitrate’s transfer requirement. Confirm that the media is compatible with the output you intend to send, and test the complete stream rather than assuming the server can sustain it.

Encode or transcode on the VPS

Encoding or converting video continuously adds a substantial compute requirement. A plan’s advertised vCPU count alone does not establish that it can handle your resolution and frame rate without overload; sustained performance depends on the actual plan and workload. Benchmark the intended stream on the plan you would buy, and watch for dropped frames or process instability. No particular VPS or FFmpeg setup is established here as capable of continuous encoding under ₹500.

Set the stream to YouTube’s published requirements

YouTube’s live encoder guide lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Match the settings to your encoder and the quality you are actually sending; for H.264, use the resolution-specific recommended video bitrate in the table above.

Before relying on an always-on setup, send a test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Check YouTube’s stream health and read any messages it displays; a static or silent test may not expose problems that occur with the real content. YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Plan for copyright, continuity and channel rules

A technically healthy stream is not automatically permitted content. Use video, music and other material you have rights to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization policies before leaving a channel running continuously. Repeatedly looping material does not grant permission to use it, and technical compliance with encoder settings does not determine whether content qualifies for monetization. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical prompt for rights questions; it is not a substitute for permission from rights holders or YouTube policy.

For an unattended VPS, arrange monitoring and recovery deliberately. Decide how you will detect a dead encoder or lost connection, how a process will restart, and how you will verify that YouTube has resumed receiving the stream. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A VPS provider’s transfer allowance and compute resources do not, by themselves, establish end-to-end uptime or automatic recovery.

Managed cloud streaming as an alternative

StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider if the goal is a continuously running YouTube stream without administering a VPS: it loops uploaded video from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free and no card required. This is a managed service, not a VPS, and its stated prices do not establish that it fits a ₹500 all-in budget.

StreamSetu’s pricing page, accessed in 2026, advertises plans from $5/month per live channel; the page says quality-specific prices appear in its dashboard and storage is charged separately. Verify current price and limits with the provider before choosing it.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on; it supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
