- Included outbound transfer, fair-use conditions, and the charge for exceeding the allowance.
- Whether advertised port speed is a burst or sustained limit. A “1 Gbps port” does not tell you how much monthly transfer is included or whether the server can encode your media.
- CPU allocation and whether it can sustain software encoding at your intended resolution and frame rate.
- Any separate charges for IPv4, backups, or other required services.
For a basic file loop, FFmpeg avoids the overhead of a graphical desktop. Use OBS only if you need its scene-composition workflow, and confirm that the VPS can sustain the chosen encoder settings.
Estimate monthly outbound bandwidth
Use the bitrate you actually configure. A useful estimate is: bitrate in megabits per second ÷ 8 × 3,600 seconds × 24 hours × 30 days. The results below are arithmetic estimates for one continuous output in a 30-day month, in decimal terabytes; they exclude protocol overhead and retries.

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom over the combined primary and backup bitrates. For a single 4.5 Mbps output, that means at least 5.4 Mbps of stable outbound capacity under that recommendation. Capacity is not the same as a monthly transfer allowance. Set YouTube’s ingest settings
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and copy the server URL and stream key shown for the encoder. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. Use RTMPS when available; Google describes it as RTMP over SSL.

YouTube currently accepts RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. For an H.264 stream, its recommended bitrates are 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Apply the settings that match the actual source and encoder, and consult the current YouTube encoder settings rather than assuming a VPS can encode any format at any rate.
Higher bitrate uses more transfer and may require more stable network capacity. A lower bitrate reduces traffic, but test the resulting picture and sound before relying on it for a continuous channel.

Run a loop with FFmpeg on Linux
Prepare and upload your media file to the VPS, then install FFmpeg using the package method supported by your Linux distribution. The exact command depends on the source file’s codecs, desired output settings, and current YouTube ingest requirements; the cited third-party VPS livestream guide is an example workflow, not a tested command or reliability guarantee. Do not paste an arbitrary command without checking its input path, encoder settings, and stream-key handling.
- Prepare a test source. Confirm that the file plays correctly and that you have permission to use its video and audio. Decide whether to preserve its existing quality or encode it to a chosen H.264 output.
- Get the ingest details. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key. Keep the key out of public scripts, logs, screenshots, and support posts.
- Configure the encoder. Set the output to the supported ingest protocol, choose a resolution and frame rate your VPS can sustain, use CBR where appropriate, and set a two-second keyframe interval. Use the bitrate guidance in the previous section as a starting point.
- Loop the media. Configure FFmpeg to repeat the source and send it to YouTube’s ingest URL. Verify the command against your media and FFmpeg build; the third-party guide provides an example, not a universally safe or validated recipe.
- Preview before relying on it. Check YouTube’s stream preview for video, audio, and health warnings. Test stopping and restarting the process, and verify that the channel resumes receiving the feed.
- Keep it supervised. Run the encoder under a process supervisor and configure alerts for process exit, network loss, and stream health. These are operational safeguards; no particular watchdog configuration is validated here.
A single looping process can fail if the encoder exits, the VPS loses connectivity, or YouTube stops receiving the feed. A process restart can address an encoder exit, but it does not replace checking the YouTube preview or investigating a persistent network or ingest problem.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says that if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured as an archive at all. If a replay matters, keep each live session under 12 hours and retain a separate recording when needed. You are responsible for having the rights to the material in your stream and for following YouTube’s rules and Community Guidelines. A file looping continuously is not exempt from copyright or platform policies. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and use only content you are permitted to broadcast.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the stream URL and key match the active Live Control Room session, that the key has not been exposed or replaced, and that the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Preview again after correcting the details.
- The stream starts but drops or buffers: Check actual sustained outbound stability, encoder health, and provider limits. Compare the configured bitrate plus any backup output with available capacity; YouTube recommends 20% headroom above the combined bitrates.
- The VPS runs out of transfer or incurs overage: Compare measured or estimated monthly egress with the plan’s allowance and overage terms. A fast port does not establish an unlimited transfer allowance.
- The picture is poor at a reduced bitrate: Test the source at the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Lower rates save transfer but can reduce quality; adjust based on preview rather than assuming a particular result.
- The encoder stops after running for a while: Inspect its logs and the VPS resource and network status, then configure supervision and alerts so an exit is noticed and can be recovered.
- No replay appears after a long session: Sessions longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives. Keep archive-critical sessions shorter and make a separate recording.

A VPS gives you control of the operating system, encoder, and media handling, but you must arrange setup, transfer budgeting, supervision, and recovery. A managed service shifts the ongoing stream connection away from your VPS after you upload the media; assess its limits and terms directly.
