FFmpeg loops your audio or video, then sends it to YouTube Live using the channel’s ingest address and stream key. Docker packages the software; it does not keep the host online, restart a failed process by itself, or guarantee that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide explains the process.
- A computer or server that can stay on and connected to the internet, with Docker available.
- Audio or video files you have the rights to stream, plus a playlist or other way to define what plays.
- FFmpeg in a Docker image, and YouTube’s current server address and stream key for the stream.
This is a self-hosted pattern, not a verified, ready-to-run Docker Compose recipe. The image provides FFmpeg; you still need to configure the media loop, output format, credentials, restart behavior, and monitoring for your own host.
Enable YouTube Live and get the ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel if it is not already enabled. Allow for the first-time enablement period stated by YouTube; it can take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio and locate its server or ingestion address and stream key.
- Keep the stream key secret. It authorizes an encoder to send a feed to your channel, so provide it to the container at runtime rather than placing it in a public image, source repository, or shared configuration file.
Use the endpoint YouTube supplies for your channel rather than copying an address from an older tutorial. If you choose RTMPS, follow YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guidance: the guide specifies TLS, port 443, and the correct hostname for SNI-based authentication.
Prepare the media and decide whether to encode
Make the playlist loop explicit
Place the media and playlist where the container can read them, such as a mounted directory that persists outside the container. Configure FFmpeg’s input behavior so playback returns to the start or advances through the playlist continuously; an unattended process should not depend on someone restarting it when a file ends. The exact loop syntax depends on how the playlist is built and whether it contains audio-only or audio-and-video inputs.

Copy compatible streams or encode them
If a source’s codecs and stream layout are compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements, FFmpeg may be able to pass the streams through rather than re-encode them. Otherwise configure an encode that meets YouTube’s current guidance. Check the actual input files and output settings before relying on a long run: a container can stay active while producing an unsupported or incomplete feed.
Do not treat an arbitrary FFmpeg command copied from an example as universal. The appropriate media mapping, codecs, bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, and audio settings depend on the files and the current YouTube ingest requirements. The sources available here do not establish a tested Dockerfile or Compose file, nor a single set of encoder values suitable for every channel.

Run FFmpeg in Docker and keep it available
- Choose a Docker image that includes FFmpeg, or build an image with the FFmpeg version and dependencies your media requires.
- Provide the playlist and media to the container, using persistent storage where the container needs access to files across restarts or replacements.
- Pass the YouTube ingest address and stream key at runtime through your deployment’s secret or environment mechanism. Avoid baking the key into the image.
- Configure FFmpeg to loop the inputs and send the resulting feed to the current YouTube endpoint. Confirm that it maps the intended audio and video streams.
- Run the container on a host that will remain powered and connected. Choose a Docker restart policy or an external supervisor appropriate to the host, and test what happens after both a process failure and a host reboot.
- Monitor the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s live health feedback. A running container only proves that a process exists; it does not prove that viewers are receiving valid audio and video.
These are operational design steps, not a claim that any particular restart policy, host size, or configuration has been tested here. One public Ubuntu VPS implementation example uses FFmpeg looping with a service manager to survive crashes and reboots; treat that as one approach, not as a guarantee of uptime or official Docker guidance.
Understand streams, broadcasts, and 24/7 archives
YouTube distinguishes the incoming stream from the viewer-facing broadcast. The stream is the encoder’s audio/video feed; a broadcast is the live event viewers watch. YouTube’s API documentation describes keeping a 24/7 broadcast live while completing a separate broadcast associated with the same stream. This distinction matters if you need to change or segment the viewer-facing event without assuming the encoder feed and broadcast are the same resource. See the YouTube Live Streaming API reference.

YouTube Help says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single uninterrupted 24/7 session exceeds that stated threshold, so do not assume it will produce one complete automatic archive. If archive segments matter, check the current Studio controls and plan separate broadcast sessions deliberately.
Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
Only stream material you are authorized to use. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” When a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube’s guidance also warns that having a license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before putting a playlist on repeat.

Diagnose stream health
Use YouTube’s live dashboard and resource health information alongside container logs. YouTube’s API health reference identifies configuration problems including missing audio or video, an unsupported video codec, an open GOP, and keyframes that are too far apart. Health findings can be informational, warnings, or errors. Check the specific reported issue rather than inferring success from a locally running FFmpeg process. Common symptoms and what to check
- The container exits when a file ends: verify the FFmpeg input or playlist loop behavior, and inspect the process logs for the exit reason.
- The process runs but YouTube shows no usable feed: confirm the server address and key, then check whether the intended audio and video streams are present and mapped.
- YouTube reports an encoder or configuration problem: use the health status details to check codec support, GOP structure, and keyframe spacing against current YouTube guidance.
- The stream stops after a host restart or process crash: test the chosen restart policy or supervisor and make sure required media and configuration persist outside the container.
- The stream is interrupted despite successful ingest: check YouTube notifications and copyright status; Content ID matching can affect a live feed independently of Docker or FFmpeg health.
- The expected full-day archive is missing or incomplete: review the broadcast session design and YouTube’s archive behavior for sessions that exceed the under-12-hour automatic-archive description.
Docker self-hosting or a managed cloud service?
Docker offers control over the encoder and deployment, but you remain responsible for the host, updates, process recovery, and monitoring. A managed service reduces the need to keep a computer at home running, though its precise features and pricing depend on the service. The evidence here does not establish a comparative reliability or cost ranking across providers.
