Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can run a YouTube radio-style live stream from a refurbished PC by connecting an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room, choosing settings the computer and internet connection can sustain, and planning for power, network, recording, monitoring, and music rights. YouTube does not publish a minimum PC specification or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation, so test the actual setup before relying on it.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- A refurbished desktop PC capable of encoding your chosen video settings for a sustained period.
- An encoder, a stable internet connection with sufficient upload bandwidth, and the YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Video and audio you have the necessary rights to stream and, if applicable, archive.
- A monitoring and recovery plan for encoder, network, power, storage, and audio failures.
YouTube’s official guidance supports encoder-based streams, but the reviewed YouTube pages do not specify a minimum CPU, RAM amount, or approved refurbished-PC model. Treat compatibility as something to verify with your particular machine and settings, not a certification attached to a PC model.

Choose and inspect a refurbished PC
Start with the workload rather than a model name. A static radio visual with audio may demand less encoding capacity than a program with motion graphics or multiple video sources, but the only reliable answer is a sustained test using the output settings you intend to broadcast.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the machine and seller
- Encoding path: Confirm which encoding options the PC and encoder can use, then test the chosen one at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Processor and memory: Check that the machine handles the encoder and any other software you need without overload. YouTube does not publish a minimum CPU or RAM requirement for this use.
- Storage and cooling: Inspect drive health and available space, and watch temperatures and fan behavior during a long test. A local recording needs additional sustained storage capacity.
- Connectivity: Check for a usable Ethernet port if you plan to connect the PC by cable. Wired networking can avoid some local wireless problems, but cannot increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service.
- Condition and recourse: Review the seller’s warranty and return terms, and check the physical condition before committing the machine to a continuous workload.
Compare the supporting equipment
| Item | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Refurbished desktop PC | Encoding capability for your chosen settings, CPU and memory workload, storage health, cooling, Ethernet, physical condition, warranty, and return terms | YouTube supports encoder streams but does not specify a minimum PC configuration in its reviewed guidance. |
| UPS for PC and router | Combined load, usable battery runtime, outlets, battery condition, and replacement cost | A UPS may bridge a short interruption; actual runtime depends on the load and battery health. |
| Local recording drive | Capacity, interface, sustained write behavior, drive health, and retention plan | A local copy can protect an archive when a long YouTube live event is not captured. |
| Wired network accessories | Cable length and compatibility with the PC and router | Ethernet can support a more stable local connection, but does not solve insufficient ISP upload capacity. |
Set up and test the YouTube encoder stream
- Confirm eligibility: Verify the channel and check for a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- Create or schedule the event: Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Allow time for setup and testing; YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
- Choose output settings: In your encoder, select a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that the PC can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 options, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—not exceeding four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Use a suitable bitrate: YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular PC or connection can deliver them reliably. The recommended rate varies with resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Connect the encoder: Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder’s live-stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in public screenshots or configuration files, and regenerate it if it is exposed.
- Start a test and inspect the preview: Start the encoder, confirm that the event receives a preview, and check stream health, picture, and audio before publishing. Run the test long enough to reveal heat, encoder overload, dropped frames, or audio gaps.
- Monitor after going live: Keep checking the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A successful preview at the start does not prove the stream will remain healthy indefinitely.
For full settings by codec and format, use YouTube’s current encoder settings page rather than assuming one bitrate works for every resolution or frame rate.

- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
Make upload capacity and power more dependable
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom above that total. Test upload speed on the actual connection, including at the times when the network is likely to be busy; advertised download speed does not establish how much upload capacity is available. YouTube warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. See its encoder guidance and streaming tips.
- Prefer a reliable wired connection when the PC’s location makes that practical.
- Check whether other devices or uploads are competing for bandwidth during the broadcast.
- If brief power interruptions are a concern, consider a UPS for both the PC and router. Size it for their combined load and the runtime you need; there is no universal capacity that guarantees a particular outage duration.
- Plan for longer outages too: a UPS may only bridge a limited period, depending on load and battery condition.
Plan monitoring, restarts, and recordings
YouTube’s reviewed documentation does not promise a maximum uptime for one live event or prescribe a guaranteed unattended restart method for a 24/7 channel. Treat continuous operation as an operational responsibility: decide who or what will detect a failure, how it will be diagnosed, and how the stream will be restored.

Write down a recovery checklist
- Check whether the encoder is still running and whether it reports an error or stopped output.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status and confirm that the event is receiving video and audio.
- Check the network and power, then reconnect or restart only as appropriate for the failure.
- Check the recording destination for free space and confirm the local recording is still growing.
- Listen for audio gaps or silence as well as checking the video; a live picture alone does not confirm a working radio feed.
Do not rely on a single YouTube archive for a 24/7 event
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its archive guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If a replay matters, record locally, confirm that the file grows during the broadcast, ensure the destination has enough free space, and plan how recordings will be retained or segmented. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

File size depends on bitrate and duration. Keep enough capacity for the recording and verify local archive integrity rather than assuming that a running encoder has produced a usable file.

Clear music and visual rights before broadcasting
Use only material for which you have the necessary rights for the intended live stream and any replay. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the broadcast with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the identified material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on live-streaming copyrighted content.
YouTube’s live-streaming terms require the provider to hold the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation on Google services, including relevant rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants, and to follow applicable laws and regulations. See YouTube’s live-streaming terms.

For an India-based channel, the licensing path depends on the repertoire, rights holders, territory, and whether the program uses live performance, recordings, or archived playback. Do not assume that one license covers every use. Obtain permission that covers the planned uses and consult a qualified Indian rights professional where needed.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or poor stream health | Insufficient or unstable upload bandwidth, or competing network traffic | Check upload capacity on the live connection, compare it with total stream bitrate, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them. |
| Encoder overload or stuttering video | The refurbished PC cannot sustain the chosen encoding workload, or is overheating | Test the actual settings over time, check encoder status and cooling, and choose a less demanding output if needed. |
| Live event has no incoming picture or audio | Encoder output is stopped, settings or stream key are incorrect, or the source is silent | Check the encoder’s server URL and key, confirm it is sending, inspect the YouTube preview, and verify audio at the encoder source. |
| Stream interrupted after a copyright match | Third-party material was identified and remains in the live feed, or the channel is not allowlisted by the rights owner | Remove or replace the matched material and resolve permissions or Content ID allowlisting with the relevant rights holder before resuming. |
| No complete YouTube replay | The live event exceeded 12 hours | Use a local recording for important archives; check that it is growing and has adequate storage. |
| Recording stops or disk fills | Insufficient free space or a storage failure | Check drive health and remaining capacity, establish a retention or segmentation plan, and verify the local file during the broadcast. |
| Stream stops during a power event | Power interruption outlasted the available backup, or the router lost power | Check both PC and router power backup, account for actual load and battery condition, and document how to restore the encoder and event. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a refurbished PC, connection, and home power available around the clock is not the right fit, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the uploaded content, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.
