Provision the server, prepare and test the playlist, connect OBS to a YouTube live event, then monitor the stream before leaving it unattended. One important trade-off: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a single 24/7 event is not a reliable way to create a YouTube archive.
What you need to confirm first
This is a self-managed setup: you are responsible for the server image, OBS environment, media, outgoing connection, and recovery when something fails. Contabo’s installation guide explains how to install a server image, but it does not establish that a particular VPS plan can encode your OBS scene continuously. There is no verified Contabo-specific benchmark or guaranteed upload capacity to rely on here.

- A Contabo VPS with an operating system and remote access suitable for the OBS setup you intend to use.
- A playlist of media you have the rights to stream and, if needed, record.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to the event’s current stream settings.
- Sustained VPS CPU or compatible encoder capacity, plus outbound bandwidth above the combined audio and video bitrate.
- A plan for monitoring, process recovery, and archive retention.
OBS’s hardware encoding options depend on compatible hardware and drivers. The cited OBS guidance does not confirm that any particular Contabo VPS exposes an encoder such as NVENC or Quick Sync. Check your actual instance rather than assuming a hardware encoder is available.
1. Install and access the Contabo VPS
- Sign in to the Contabo Customer Control Panel and install the VPS using an available image appropriate for your intended operating system. Contabo’s first-install guide covers the provider’s provisioning steps: How to install a Contabo server for the first time.
- Save the server credentials securely. For a Linux setup, Contabo’s installation guidance supports using an SSH public key; keep the corresponding private key private and restrict access to it.
- Confirm that you can connect remotely and that the selected image supports the display, desktop, and remote-session behavior required by your OBS configuration. Those details vary with the image and are not established for every Contabo VPS.
- Before building the full scene, run a short encoding test on this instance. Watch CPU use, dropped frames, and network behavior at your intended output settings. Do not infer sustained performance from the advertised core count alone.
2. Put the playlist on the server and test it
Copy the media files to the VPS, then configure your OBS scene and playlist source to play them in the intended order and loop as required by your chosen setup. The exact playlist method can depend on your operating system, OBS version, and scene configuration; the available sources do not validate a specific OBS-on-Contabo recipe.

- Use only videos and audio you are authorized to broadcast. A public or unlisted YouTube stream is still a public performance and does not grant rights to music, video, or other material.
- Check the first item, transitions, and the loop boundary. Listen for silence, abrupt audio changes, and clips that end or restart unexpectedly.
- Use a short private or otherwise appropriately restricted test event where possible. Watch the YouTube preview and confirm that the picture, sound, and playback order are correct before switching to a public event.
- Estimate local recording storage separately if you intend to keep an archive. Continuous recording can consume substantial disk space, and the required capacity depends on bitrate and duration.
3. Connect OBS to a YouTube Live event
- Enable live streaming for the YouTube channel if it is not already enabled, then create or select the live event in YouTube Studio.
- Open the event’s stream settings in YouTube Studio and copy the current server details and stream key into the corresponding streaming settings in OBS. Prefer RTMPS when it is offered by YouTube.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not include it in screenshots, public configuration files, logs, or support messages. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Start OBS streaming and verify that YouTube receives the signal. Use YouTube Studio’s live preview and stream-health indicators rather than treating OBS’s “streaming” state as proof viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance is the authority for encoder configuration. The older OBS community walkthrough, How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio, can provide broad orientation, but it should not override current YouTube settings.
4. Set output quality and bitrate
Choose a resolution and frame rate that match the source and that the actual VPS can encode continuously. Higher resolution and frame rate increase processing and bandwidth demands. YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate ranges include:

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of image quality or stable delivery. They refer to video bitrate; allow for audio and protocol overhead when estimating the total outgoing stream rate. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) and use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS for the connection.

If the VPS cannot sustain the selected settings, reduce output resolution or frame rate and retest. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guidance discusses reducing output resolution or scaling sources as possible troubleshooting approaches. Do not switch to a hardware encoder unless the instance actually provides compatible hardware and drivers.
5. Check sustained outbound bandwidth
Your available upload capacity must exceed the total bitrate of the stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom beyond the combined stream bitrate. A one-time speed test only shows conditions at that moment; it does not establish that the VPS path will sustain the load continuously.
- Calculate the combined video and audio bitrate you plan to send.
- Confirm that the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity exceeds that total and includes YouTube’s recommended 20% margin.
- Run an extended test from the VPS using the intended OBS scene and inspect YouTube’s stream health for instability or dropped frames.
- Repeat tests at the output settings you will actually use; changing resolution, frame rate, or bitrate changes the load.

6. Plan for 24/7 operation and archive limits
Keeping OBS open is not the same as guaranteeing continuous service. A server restart, network interruption, OBS crash, encoding overload, or YouTube-side disconnect can interrupt the broadcast. Test how your own setup behaves after each kind of failure you can safely simulate, and decide how you will notice and recover from an outage. The sources do not verify a particular automatic-restart configuration for Contabo.
YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 event therefore may not produce a YouTube archive. If retention matters, keep a separate local recording and check its file growth and available disk space, or schedule shorter broadcasts. YouTube’s archive behavior is not a substitute for your own backup.
Before leaving the setup unattended, verify the playlist, audio, outgoing bitrate, YouTube stream health, and recording behavior. Consider how you will receive alerts and regain access to the server; monitoring and recovery arrangements depend on your own tools and configuration.
