To run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with VLC and OBS, use OBS Studio to play and encode your music, then send the feed to YouTube with your stream URL and stream key. In OBS, add your local playlist as a VLC Video source and make sure Loop Playlist is enabled. VLC handles playback; OBS connects the feed to YouTube. A loop alone does not make the stream live or guarantee uninterrupted service.
Before you start: check rights, files, and channel access
Confirm you can broadcast the music
Use audio you have permission to broadcast live on YouTube. Buying a song or being able to play it privately does not establish public livestream rights. For licensed third-party music, check that the licence covers live streaming and ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID. YouTube warns that even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. A “copyright free” label is not a substitute for checking the licence terms. YouTube’s copyright guidance explains how live-stream scans can affect a broadcast.

Check livestream eligibility early
YouTube requires a verified channel, no live-stream restriction within the prior 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube’s eligibility requirements and encoder setup guidance.

Prepare the playlist and visuals
Keep the audio files and any artwork or video background accessible on the computer that will run OBS. Make an ordered playlist if sequence matters, or plan to use shuffle if rotation matters more. The rights to visual assets are your responsibility too.

Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
Set up a repeating music source in OBS
For a playlist of multiple files
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Open OBS, create or select a scene, and add a source using Sources → + → VLC Video.
- Add your local audio or video files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Inspect the source properties and leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents it as on by default, but verify the setting rather than relying on the default.
- Choose whether to enable Shuffle Playlist. Keep the source visible in the scene; OBS’s visibility behavior can stop playback when a source is hidden and restart it when visible, depending on the source settings.
OBS documents the VLC dependency, playlist loop, and visibility behavior in its media sources guide.
For one file only
If you are looping a single supported file rather than sequencing a playlist, add OBS’s built-in Media Source and enable its Loop property, which is off by default. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among its built-in audio formats. Its listed video formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The built-in Media Source is simpler for one file; VLC Video is the playlist option.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room. Select or create the stream.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or display it publicly.
- In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow uses these connection details; VLC playlist playback by itself does not connect to YouTube.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check that the feed appears in the Live Control Room and wait for the preview. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube directs creators to select Go live after the preview is ready.
Use the current YouTube encoder setup instructions for the Live Control Room flow and connection details.

Use YouTube’s current guidance for your resolution and frame rate
YouTube recommends H.264 video with CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS delivery. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. For stereo audio, its advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. These are configuration recommendations, not guarantees that a particular computer or network can sustain a stream.

Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. On YouTube’s current settings page, the recommendation for H.264 1080p30 is 14 Mbps, with 5 Mbps as the minimum. Do not apply that figure to other resolutions or frame rates; consult YouTube’s table for the exact combination you plan to use. The guidance is on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Run a controlled test
- Use representative audio and motion, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Listen for gaps, clipping, playlist transitions, and unexpected desktop audio.
- Confirm the visual scene is present and remains appropriate throughout playback.
- Check YouTube’s review messages and monitor stream health during the broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and choosing quality appropriate to the upload connection. A test can reveal problems, but it cannot guarantee that the computer, files, power, or network will remain available later.

What “24/7” means in practice
With this method, OBS runs on your computer, reads the local media, and sends the encoded feed over your internet connection. The playlist can repeat while those pieces work, but a shutdown, software problem, missing file, or lost connection can interrupt the stream. Monitor the broadcast and have a way to restart it if needed; a local playlist loop is not an uptime guarantee.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Also plan separately for replays. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer will produce a complete automatic replay. See YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance.
