You can run a continuous YouTube music stream by hosting FFmpeg on an always-on Ubuntu server, looping authorized media, and sending the encoded output to YouTube Live with the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The process can restart after a failure, but that alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream: you still need to test reconnect behavior, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and clear the music for live use and the relevant territories.
How do I run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with FFmpeg?
The signal path is media accessible to your Ubuntu host → FFmpeg → YouTube Live ingest. For an unattended setup, use a server that remains online, rather than relying on a home computer that may sleep or lose its connection. An Ubuntu VPS with looping files and a systemd service is one published implementation pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service or a universally tested configuration. The example setup and operations notes describe that general approach.
1. Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s access in YouTube Studio before building automation. Requirements can change, so consult YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
2. Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder configuration. YouTube’s setup instructions explain the encoder workflow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and logs. Store it in a restricted environment file or secret store, and limit who can read that file.
Use the stream URL and key associated with the intended YouTube event. Do not paste a real key into an example command shared publicly.

3. Prepare media and choose the loop
Make sure the audio and any accompanying visual files are available to the server, in formats supported by your FFmpeg build. Decide whether to loop one track, a collection, or a longer prepared program. FFmpeg can loop inputs, but a loop only repeats the media; it does not establish that the content is licensed, make a YouTube event permanent, or recover an ingest connection.
4. Configure FFmpeg for YouTube Live
YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its listed video ingest codecs include H.264, H.265, and AV1. For stereo audio, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Select settings appropriate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually send; the H.264 reference bitrates below are not universal values for every codec or upload path.

These are YouTube’s encoder ingestion recommendations, not a measurement of what an India-based VPS or home connection can sustain. Check the host’s sustained upload capacity and leave room for network variation. Test using audio and visual movement representative of the intended stream; YouTube explicitly recommends that kind of test and advises monitoring stream health. 5. Keep the process running and inspect failures
At a high level, configure FFmpeg to read the authorized input, loop it as planned, encode to compatible settings, and send the output to the YouTube ingest URL using the protected key. A systemd service can start the process at boot and restart it when the process exits. That is process supervision, not proof that a broken network path or YouTube ingest interruption will recover cleanly. Validate reconnection behavior with your specific FFmpeg build and event, and check both FFmpeg logs and YouTube Studio’s stream-health messages.

What bitrate should I use for a YouTube live stream?
Start with the row matching your H.264 resolution and frame rate in the table above, then test from the actual Ubuntu host. The recommended bitrate is a YouTube ingest reference, not a promise that a particular server region or network route will deliver it reliably. For audio-only programming with a still image, avoid choosing a larger video output than your visual needs justify; audio and video settings should still match YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and confirm that YouTube accepts the incoming signal in Live Control Room. If health warnings appear, compare the chosen bitrate and output mode with the encoder guidance, inspect FFmpeg’s error output, and test a lower sustainable output rather than assuming a process restart will fix insufficient bandwidth.
Can FFmpeg stream a looping playlist to YouTube?
Yes. FFmpeg can repeatedly read media inputs, so a playlist or set of files can form a looping program. The playlist itself does not guarantee seamless transitions or uninterrupted delivery: test the exact files and loop behavior, watch for input or encoding errors, and separately test what happens when the server loses its connection to YouTube. A systemd restart can relaunch a failed process, but it cannot by itself preserve a single live event or ensure an ingest outage is recovered.
Will YouTube archive a 24-hour stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not count on one uninterrupted 24-hour session producing a complete archive. If an archive matters, plan around shorter sessions or make separate recordings; confirm the current archive behavior in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Can I play copyrighted music on a YouTube live stream if I have a license?
Only if the rights you hold cover the intended live-stream use and applicable territories—and even then, a license may not prevent an interruption. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. It may issue a warning, replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube also says a rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for licensed third-party content to avoid interruption. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the provider to obtain the necessary worldwide rights, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. “Free,” purchased, or licensed for ordinary video use does not by itself establish permission for a YouTube live stream. Confirm the rights for each recording and composition, permitted territories, live use, monetization, and any allowlisting directly with rights holders or qualified counsel. The official material cited here does not settle India-specific licensing requirements.
Do not treat Creator Music as a solution for this use in India: YouTube’s Creator Music usage details describe U.S. YPP availability with expansion beyond the U.S. pending, and exclude Creator Music tracks from live streams.

Troubleshooting a continuous FFmpeg stream
