Short answer: VLC can repeat a playlist, but playlist repeat alone does not create a YouTube livestream. VLC’s documented playlist examples and YouTube’s encoder-ingest setup are separate workflows. You can use VLC to organize and loop music, but you need a tested bridge that delivers a YouTube-compatible feed to YouTube’s stream URL and key; the official instructions linked below do not establish a complete, reliable VLC-to-YouTube recipe.
What you need to make a 24/7 music stream work
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with live streaming enabled.
- Music you are authorized to broadcast on YouTube, including any rights needed for territories and an archive.
- A computer running VLC and a playlist of local audio files.
- A separate, tested encoder workflow that sends a compatible audio/video feed to YouTube using its stream URL and key.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity, plus a plan to recover from power, network, or software interruptions.
The important distinction is between playing and repeating files and sending a live encoder feed to YouTube. VLC’s documentation shows playlist sequencing and network streaming, while YouTube’s workflow asks you to configure an encoder with a stream URL and key. The documented VLC playlist examples publish local HTTP streams; they do not show that VLC’s repeat control by itself supplies YouTube’s ingest workflow. Enable YouTube live streaming first
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for your channel. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days.
- If this is the channel’s first livestream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Enable it well before the planned broadcast.
- Open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the encoder you will use.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Use the Live Control Room preview to confirm the feed before starting the public stream.
Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and activation guidance and encoder instructions; interface labels can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrepare and repeat a playlist in VLC
Build the playlist from authorized files
Add the local music files you are allowed to broadcast to a VLC playlist. Check that files play through completely and that there are no accidental gaps, silence, or unsuitable tracks at the beginning or end. If you assemble files into a continuous program, test transitions rather than assuming every file has matching volume or a clean ending.

Turn on repeat and test the boundary
Use VLC’s playlist repeat control to loop the playlist, then let it reach the final track and verify that playback returns to the beginning. Repeat handles playback sequencing inside VLC; it does not configure YouTube’s stream URL, key, or encoder ingest. VLC’s documentation also describes stream-output chains that process media and keep output open as tracks change, as well as sequential playlist broadcasts, but the cited examples use local HTTP output rather than documenting YouTube ingest. See the VLC streaming documentation.
Do not treat the repeat button as an end-to-end recipe
To publish on YouTube, the output from playback must reach a compatible encoder feed configured for YouTube. The official VLC and YouTube instructions cited here do not document a complete direct VLC-to-YouTube bridge or establish a version-specific repeat command that guarantees uninterrupted publication. Before relying on a combined setup, test it on your operating system and software versions: track changes, the playlist loop, audio continuity, reconnects, and a long-duration run. Do not assume a local HTTP playlist stream can be entered as YouTube’s encoder feed.

Configure YouTube-compatible encoding and upload
Use settings that match the selected stream
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use; there is no single bitrate that is correct for every stream. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before configuring the encoder.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must fit your available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room above the stream’s total bitrate. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Run a speed test, then test the actual audio/video configuration on the connection you will use. Prefer a reliable network; an Ethernet connection can be useful for a fixed computer, but YouTube does not require it. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.
Clear music rights before going live
Use only music for which you have the necessary rights to livestream on YouTube. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the creator to have all necessary rights, including music licensing rights. A licence for on-demand use or for another platform may not cover a live YouTube broadcast, every territory, or an archived copy, so confirm the scope with the rights holder.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can interrupt or terminate a stream. Even if you have licensed third-party music, YouTube warns that the stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm allowlisting requirements with the rights holder before scheduling the broadcast. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Plan for interruptions and YouTube archives
Playlist repeat does not keep a computer powered, prevent it from sleeping, maintain an internet connection, or restart an encoder after a crash. For a self-hosted setup, disable sleep for the operating period, ensure the machine and network equipment have stable power, monitor the Live Control Room’s stream health, and decide who will respond if the feed stops. Test the recovery procedure rather than relying on an unattended loop.

YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise of one unlimited archive for a continuous 24/7 channel. Plan how you will manage archives and confirm current Live Control Room behavior for your stream before depending on a recording. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.

| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC plays music, but YouTube shows no incoming feed | Playlist playback is working, but no compatible encoder feed is reaching YouTube. | Verify the encoder’s stream URL and key, confirm the selected workflow actually sends to YouTube ingest, and check the Live Control Room preview. VLC repeat alone is not an ingest configuration. |
| Playback stops at the end of the playlist | Repeat is not enabled, or the playlist boundary behaves differently than expected. | Test the final-to-first-track transition in VLC before connecting the workflow to a scheduled stream. |
| Stream health reports instability or drops | Upload capacity, network reliability, or encoder output may be insufficient or inconsistent. | Compare total bitrate with available upload capacity, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, check the selected codec and keyframe interval, and run a representative test. |
| Audio is interrupted or the livestream ends after a rights match | A track triggered a copyright match, or the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel. | Stop using the track until you have confirmed live-broadcast rights and any Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder. |
| The stream ends when nobody is at the computer | Sleep, power loss, network failure, or an encoder/process crash stopped the local setup. | Check power and sleep settings, network stability, process status, and your restart procedure. A repeating playlist does not provide recovery from host or connection failure. |
