How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Livestream with Prerecorded Videos on Google Cloud Run

To run a 24/7 YouTube livestream with prerecorded videos on Google Cloud Run, run a supervised, restartable publisher that reads media from durable cloud storage and sends it to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. Do not make one Cloud Run service request the stream’s lifetime: service requests time out after at most 60 minutes. Start by evaluating a Cloud Run worker pool or long-lived instance for the publisher; use a service for control and status endpoints if needed.

The publisher must handle reconnects, process restarts and media failures, and YouTube channel eligibility must be in place before launch. Google Cloud and YouTube settings change, so confirm resource availability, quotas and pricing in your target region before deployment.

Choose the right way to keep the stream running

Cloud Run has distinct execution models. Match the workload to the resource instead of trying to stretch an HTTP request into a permanent stream. Google Cloud describes worker pools as suitable for always-on background work and instances as supporting long-lived singleton workloads.

Option Fit for a continuous publisher What to account for
StreamNeo Managed alternative for YouTube prerecorded-video streams Always on from the cloud, any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with the first day free.
Cloud Run worker pool Strong Cloud Run starting point for background publishing Check current availability in your region, quotas, scaling behavior and pricing.
Cloud Run instance Potential fit for a long-lived singleton publisher Verify the current operational contract and availability for your use case.
Cloud Run service Poor fit for one uninterrupted publishing session A request times out after at most 60 minutes. A service can still host start, stop, configuration or status endpoints.
Cloud Run job Better for finite tasks than permanent publishing Jobs run to completion; repeatedly relaunching one adds coordination and possible stream gaps.

Compare options by process lifetime, recovery gap, restart and resume behavior, CPU allocation, termination and scaling controls, secret handling, network egress and total cost. Worker pools and instances are starting points, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation; verify their current behavior in the intended region.

Prepare the YouTube channel and live destination

  1. Confirm eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. Resolve eligibility before building the publishing process.
  2. Create the live destination. In YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, create or configure the stream and obtain its ingest server URL and stream key. YouTube supports software encoders.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Store it in a secret-management mechanism and inject it at runtime. Do not bake it into a container image, commit it to source control or print it in logs. Rotate it if exposed.
  4. Plan the content. Use video you have the rights to stream and check YouTube’s copyright and reused-content requirements for your channel and material. A live connection does not establish permission to rebroadcast a recording.

Build a restartable publisher

Keep media and state outside the container

Put source videos and playlist metadata in durable object storage. The container’s local filesystem should not be the canonical media library: a replacement instance may not have the same local files. Store the desired running state and, if needed, the current playlist item or playback position externally so a replacement can resume predictably.

The publisher should read the selected asset, then either encode it or copy compatible streams to the YouTube destination. A single-video loop and a playlist scheduler are both possible; define how the scheduler advances and what happens if an asset is missing, corrupt or still uploading.

Supervise the encoder and reconnect

Run the encoder under a small supervisor or entrypoint that detects process exit, reports health, and restarts it when appropriate. On a transient media or network failure, reopen the source or publishing connection and retry with bounded backoff. Log the failure and retry outcome clearly. Do not rely on one long-lived download or upload connection as the only recovery mechanism.

Keep desired state and playlist state external to the process. This makes recovery after crashes, maintenance, deployment or instance replacement an explicit application behavior rather than an assumption that a container will live forever.

Configure an output YouTube can ingest

Use the ingest server and key assigned to the live destination. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says it should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport.

Example starting profile: 1080p30 H.264

For 1080p at 30 fps with H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published profile figures, not a measurement of your Cloud Run workload. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for other resolutions, frame rates and codecs; do not carry the 14 Mbps recommendation over to a different profile without checking it.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Set a constant video bitrate appropriate to the selected profile, configure a two-second keyframe interval, and use a compatible audio codec. Ensure the encoder’s frame rate matches the source or your chosen output. The source material does not prescribe one FFmpeg command: whether to encode or copy streams depends on the uploaded file and desired output. Validate the actual encoder configuration with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before relying on it.

Deploy with a deliberate lifetime and shutdown plan

  1. Choose the publisher resource. Start with a worker pool or suitable long-lived instance for the background publisher. Keep any Cloud Run service focused on control-plane work such as start, stop, configuration or status.
  2. Set CPU and memory for the workload. Encoding cost and CPU demand vary with resolution, codec and encoding complexity. Google documents service CPU configurations up to eight vCPUs, but that is not a sizing recommendation for this publisher. Measure resource use with your chosen media and encoder settings.
  3. Configure secrets and permissions. Give the process access only to the media objects, playlist state and stream-key secret it needs. Confirm the service account and secret access in the target environment.
  4. Make termination graceful. For service background processing, instance-based billing allocates CPU across the instance lifecycle, but autoscaling can still stop instances. Google documents a 10-second grace period after SIGTERM before an instance is stopped. Catch termination, stop cleanly and persist enough external state for a replacement process to resume.
  5. Deploy and test before announcing. Start the encoder early, inspect the Live Control Room preview for picture and sound, and test the recovery path. If you have a backup encoder, test its handoff rather than assuming it works.

A Cloud Run service request defaults to five minutes and can be configured up to 60 minutes; a timed-out request closes its connection and returns 504. Google recommends retries and reconnection tolerance for service requests longer than 15 minutes, and clients are not guaranteed to reconnect to the same instance. Those request behaviors are another reason not to treat a service request as the 24/7 stream session.

  • Encoder exits, repeated restarts or failed reconnects.
  • A prolonged absence of outgoing media or a missing Live Control Room preview.
  • Increasing errors, unavailable or incomplete media assets, and failure to read playlist state.
  • Unexpected termination, failed secret access or a replacement process that does not resume the desired stream.

Cloud Run troubleshooting guidance notes that outbound connections can be reset during infrastructure updates. Recreate long-lived connections when they fail instead of assuming an existing connection remains healthy.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
The stream stops around an hour later, or a request returns 504. The publishing session was tied to a Cloud Run service request. Move the publisher to a worker pool or suitable long-lived instance; reserve service requests for control operations.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. Wrong ingest URL or stream key, ineligible channel, or incompatible encoder output. Check channel eligibility, the destination’s assigned server URL and key, transport, codec and Live Control Room preview. Keep the key secret while diagnosing.
The feed disconnects during an update or network interruption. A long-lived outbound connection was reset. Detect the failed connection, reopen it with bounded retries and backoff, and alert if output does not resume.
A replacement process starts at the wrong playlist item or cannot find media. Playback state or source files existed only in the old container. Store media and required playlist state durably outside the container; define recovery behavior for missing or incomplete assets.
The encoder exits or cannot keep up. Resource sizing or encoder configuration does not match the workload. Inspect structured logs and CPU use, then measure with the intended resolution and codec before changing resource allocation.
Audio or video is missing or poor in preview. Source, codec, bitrate, frame-rate or audio configuration is unsuitable. Check the selected profile against YouTube’s current encoder guidance and inspect the preview before launch.

Estimate the real 24/7 cost

There is no deployment-independent monthly Cloud Run price for this design. Estimate from the chosen resource type, CPU, memory, active duration, storage and network egress in the target region. Instance-based billing charges for the lifecycle of running instances; request-based billing allocates CPU while processing requests. Add object-storage and egress charges, and use Google Cloud’s current pricing calculator with the actual configuration. Also account for restart gaps and any backup publisher you decide to run. Do not treat a sample estimate from another region or resource configuration as your bill.
