You can run OBS continuously on a Mac mini, but a 24/7 stream depends on more than the computer: YouTube must allow your channel to go live, the Mac and network must stay available, and the stream needs monitoring and a recovery plan. For a live production with changing scenes or live inputs, use OBS as described below. If you only need to loop uploaded videos, a cloud service such as StreamNeo is a different option that does not require a Mac to remain on.

Before you begin: choose the right kind of 24/7 stream

OBS on a Mac mini is suited to a continuously produced live feed—for example, a scene combining live inputs, overlays, or other changing content. It runs on the Mac, so that computer, its power, and its internet connection are part of the streaming path.

If your goal is to replay prerecorded videos continuously rather than produce a live OBS scene, YouTube lists cloud services for that workflow. StreamNeo is one alternative: it loops videos uploaded to its cloud and streams them to YouTube. It is not a camera-based live production tool.

What you need

  • A Mac mini running macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later, with an Intel or Apple Silicon processor. This is OBS’s macOS baseline, not a guarantee that a particular Mac can handle your scenes or run without interruption. OBS says capacity varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements
  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before launch. YouTube live streaming tips
  • OBS Studio, a YouTube Live Control Room event, and a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity.
  • A plan to monitor the stream and respond if the Mac, OBS, or network stops sending video.

Set up OBS and choose an encoder

Install OBS and run its configuration wizard

Install an OBS version compatible with your macOS, then open OBS and use its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. Treat its result as a baseline to test, not proof that your Mac mini can sustain your final scene around the clock. Complex browser sources, captures, animated graphics, and multiple scenes can add load.

Match the encoder to the Mac mini

On Apple Silicon, OBS documents hardware streaming through Apple VideoToolbox using H.264. On Intel Macs, OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported for services requiring constant bitrate and directs users to x264. Do not select an encoder just because the Mac mini has hardware video capabilities; choose the option supported by your Mac and OBS, then test it with your actual scene. OBS hardware encoding

Apple’s current Mac mini specifications page covers M6 and M5 Pro configurations and lists hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC encoding. Those specifications do not establish how a specific Mac mini will perform in a 24/7 OBS setup. Apple Mac mini technical specifications

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule the event you want to broadcast. If live streaming is not enabled for the channel yet, complete activation first and allow up to 24 hours.
  2. Get the stream key and stream URL. YouTube describes the key as both the encoder’s feed address and password. Keep it private; do not show it in screenshots, public guides, or screen recordings. Manage live stream settings
  3. Configure the YouTube service in OBS. Enter the stream key and use the stream URL supplied by YouTube. Prefer RTMPS where supported; it transports RTMP over TLS/SSL. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  4. Keep the event available for preview. Start the encoder before you announce or depend on the stream so you can check the incoming picture, audio, and health indicators in Live Control Room.

Use a conservative YouTube output target

For a typical SDR H.264 stream, YouTube’s undated encoder-settings guidance recommends these starting bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of stream stability. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Output target Recommended H.264 video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced recommendations for SDR include 44.1 kHz stereo and 128 kbps stereo audio.
  • Color: Rec. 709 for SDR.

Choose 30 fps if it meets the content’s needs and you want a lower bitrate target; 60 fps may suit content with more motion but calls for more upload bandwidth and encoding capacity. Keep resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity within what your Mac and connection can sustain.

Check upload bandwidth, not just download speed

YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. The relevant result from a speed test is upload capacity, and the connection should have extra room for normal variation or other devices sharing it. If you use a backup stream, account for the primary stream, backup stream, and headroom together. YouTube streaming tips

For example, a 5 Mbps video target plus 128 kbps audio is about 5.13 Mbps before transport overhead. Adding roughly 20% gives a rough minimum of 6.2 Mbps of usable upload for that stream. This is arithmetic from YouTube’s recommended settings and headroom guidance, not a separate performance guarantee; allow more margin on a shared or variable connection.

Test the whole setup before relying on it

  1. Configure early. YouTube’s event setup tips advise configuring at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. For a continuous channel, use the same principle: test well before the broadcast becomes important.
  2. Test representative content. Include audio and movement similar to what the stream will actually show. Confirm that OBS is sending the intended scene and that the sound is audible and at a suitable level.
  3. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Look for warnings in Live Control Room and verify the channel or watch page from another device, including a phone.
  4. Exercise the recovery plan. Decide who will notice a failed stream and how they will restart OBS or reconnect it. If you use a backup encoder, test failover. Do not assume that OBS or macOS will automatically recover from every failure.
  5. Monitor during operation. Check picture, sound, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. YouTube streaming tips

Plan for continuous operation and YouTube policies

Keep the Mac and connection available

A local OBS stream relies on the Mac mini staying powered, awake, connected, and able to encode the scene. Check macOS power and sleep behavior, avoid planned restarts during the broadcast, and consider the effects of internet or power interruptions. These precautions reduce avoidable stops but do not make a local setup uninterrupted.

Use content you have the right to stream

Before running a continuous broadcast, confirm that you have the rights to the video, music, and other material in your scenes. YouTube’s live-streaming tools may surface restrictions or stream-health problems; a test does not replace rights clearance or guarantee that content will remain available.

Do not assume one endless event or complete archive

The maximum duration for one uninterrupted YouTube live event and the archive behavior for a stream left running around the clock are not established here. If a complete recording or archive is important, check YouTube’s current guidance for your planned use case and arrange separate recording or rotation accordingly rather than assuming a 24/7 event will become one complete video.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
You cannot start a live stream Channel verification, restrictions, or first-time activation may be incomplete. Check channel eligibility and live-streaming status in YouTube. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed Wrong stream key, wrong URL, or incorrect YouTube service configuration. Confirm the event’s key and URL in Live Control Room, then re-enter them in OBS. Keep the key private.
Stream health reports connection trouble or the stream drops Insufficient or fluctuating upload bandwidth, local network disruption, or internet outage. Test upload capacity, lower the output target if needed, leave more headroom, and inspect the connection. Follow your restart or failover plan.
Video stutters or OBS struggles The encoder, resolution, frame rate, or scene may exceed the Mac’s available capacity. Reduce scene complexity or output demands, select the encoder appropriate for Intel or Apple Silicon, and retest using representative content.
Audio is missing or goes silent The selected audio source, routing, or content may not be producing sound. Check OBS audio meters and the YouTube preview, then test the actual audio source before leaving the stream unattended.
The stream ends while the Mac is unattended Power, sleep, application, system, or network interruption. Review power and sleep settings, inspect logs or status when available, and make sure a person or monitoring process can detect and respond. No single setting guarantees automatic recovery.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you are looping uploaded videos rather than building a live OBS production, StreamNeo keeps the YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.

See StreamNeo or start your free day.

Cost and trade-offs

OBS itself is the encoder software, but a local 24/7 setup also depends on the Mac mini, electricity, internet service, and whoever handles monitoring and recovery. A cloud service shifts the playback workload away from the home computer, but it is a different workflow: StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube rather than broadcasting a live camera or OBS scene.
