You can use OBS on a DigitalOcean Droplet to send a YouTube livestream, but YouTube and DigitalOcean’s documented settings alone do not establish a reliable, unattended OBS-on-Linux setup or restart procedure. First confirm your channel is eligible, create the live stream in YouTube, and configure OBS with YouTube’s recommended encoder settings; then verify the Droplet’s network capacity, monitor stream health, and budget for both compute and outbound data.
What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee
OBS encodes a broadcast and sends it to YouTube; the Droplet is the Linux virtual machine that would host OBS instead of a computer at home. YouTube then transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers. That does not mean a particular Droplet can sustain a chosen stream, or that OBS will keep running or recover unattended after a failure.

It does not establish exact current steps for installing and running OBS without a conventional desktop session, keeping the process alive, or automatically restarting it after a failure. Check YouTube eligibility before provisioning a Droplet
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and belong to a streamer at least 16 years old. Confirm eligibility in YouTube before spending time or money configuring a server. A channel restriction can prevent the broadcast regardless of the Droplet or OBS settings.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to run. Use the stream’s current server URL and key; do not assume an old key or endpoint is still appropriate.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes the key as the encoder’s password/address. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to the stream. Do not publish it, paste it into public logs, or share screenshots that expose it.
- Reset a compromised key. If it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration to use the replacement before broadcasting again.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use an encoder’s YouTube RTMPS preset when available; otherwise get the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. Confirm the endpoint and key together rather than substituting a generic server address.
Set OBS to YouTube’s recommended encoder values
In OBS, configure the stream service and server/key from the YouTube stream you created, then set the video and audio output to match your intended broadcast. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its recommendations are guidance, not proof that a given Droplet can encode or upload at those settings.

Choose a bitrate for the resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations vary with output resolution and frame rate. The values below are recommendations from YouTube’s encoder guidance, not minimums, guarantees, or validated Droplet capacities.

Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the full resolution-and-frame-rate table before selecting a different output. Choose an OBS output your production actually needs; a higher resolution or frame rate raises the bitrate requirement and the outbound-data bill.

Prepare the Droplet and verify the broadcast path
- Select a Droplet only after checking current plan details. DigitalOcean describes Droplets as Linux-based virtual machines, but the material available here does not establish a particular size adequate for OBS encoding. Do not treat a suggested CPU or memory size as validated for your workload.
- Confirm that your intended OBS environment is supported. The official material cited here does not provide an authoritative current recipe for desktop/session setup on headless Linux, process supervision, or restart-on-failure. Establish those details for your chosen operating environment before relying on it for unattended streaming.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube stream. Enter the current RTMPS endpoint and protected stream key, and configure the codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings described above.
- Test before leaving it unattended. Start with representative audio and movement, check the YouTube preview, and read the stream-health messages. A static test alone may miss problems that emerge with motion or audio.
- Monitor the connection during operation. YouTube warns that network interruptions can break a stream. A Droplet is not a substitute for monitoring, and the documented settings do not guarantee automatic recovery if YouTube or the network drops the broadcast.
Leave upload-bandwidth headroom
YouTube advises keeping total streaming bitrate below the available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% of that capacity unused. As a planning rule, a 10 Mbps stream needs at least 12.5 Mbps of stable available upload capacity to preserve 20% headroom; a 12 Mbps stream needs at least 15 Mbps. These are arithmetic implications of YouTube’s guidance, not measurements of a particular Droplet’s network.

Check the actual upload capacity available to the server and account for all simultaneous traffic, not only OBS’s configured video bitrate. A bitrate that briefly fits but repeatedly competes with other traffic can still produce poor stream health or interruption.

DigitalOcean’s bandwidth billing documentation, last verified 14 September 2026, says Droplet plans include an outbound-transfer allowance pooled across a team’s Droplets. Inbound transfer is free, and outbound transfer above the team’s included pool is listed at $0.01 per GiB. Check the current plan allowance and rate before provisioning; both pricing and usage terms can change.

For an always-on stream, the video bitrate gives a useful first estimate of outbound data. At 10 Mbps, a continuous 30-day stream sends about 3,240 decimal GB (roughly 3,019 GiB) of video payload; at 12 Mbps, about 3,888 decimal GB (roughly 3,623 GiB). These are calculations from bitrate × runtime, not observed billing totals. Actual transfer can differ because of protocol overhead, audio, reconnects, and other outbound traffic. Compare the estimate with the team’s pooled allowance, not a per-Droplet allowance.
DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing documentation, last verified 25 August 2026, says bundled CPU Droplets continue accruing charges while powered off because compute resources remain reserved; billing ends when the Droplet is destroyed. Include the selected Droplet’s current price for the intended runtime as a separate cost from possible transfer overage. A total cannot be stated responsibly without the current Droplet plan, stream bitrate and uptime, and team-wide transfer consumption.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube will not accept the broadcast: recheck channel eligibility, the selected stream, and whether the current stream URL and key were copied correctly. Reset and replace the key if it may have been exposed.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: compare OBS’s configured bitrate with the available upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and check for competing traffic or connection interruptions.
- The picture or audio does not match the intended output: verify H.264, CBR, the two-second keyframe interval (never above four seconds), resolution/frame rate, and stereo audio settings. Test with representative motion and sound.
- The stream stops after a disconnect: YouTube warns that network disruptions can break a stream. The available documentation does not establish a verified OBS restart or automatic-recovery procedure for a headless Droplet; do not assume the process will resume by itself.
- The bill is higher than expected: check compute runtime and the team’s pooled outbound transfer separately. A powered-off bundled CPU Droplet still accrues charges, and transfer overage applies beyond the pooled allowance.
