You can use a Mac mini as an encoder for a 24/7 YouTube Live stream by feeding it a prepared ocean-sounds recording and visual, then sending the encoder output to YouTube. YouTube supports encoder streaming, but its guidance does not establish a Mac mini-specific setup or guarantee that any particular Mac mini will run continuously without intervention. Plan for power, network and software interruptions—and do not rely on YouTube to save a broadcast that runs longer than 12 hours.
What you need before you start
The Mac mini method keeps the encoding work on your computer: the Mac mini, encoder and internet connection need to remain available while the broadcast is running. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers the connection to YouTube, but the Mac mini model, macOS version, OBS build and power-management setup are not specified here. Treat those as variables to test rather than assuming a particular machine has been validated for continuous operation.

- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to live stream, with no live-streaming restriction from the last 90 days.
- A prepared audio recording and visual that you have the rights to use in a livestream.
- An encoder such as OBS, an internet connection that can sustain your chosen upload bitrate, and the YouTube stream key for the event.
- A plan for local recordings if you need a replay or backup archive.
First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. Enable it and confirm access well before the planned launch.
Prepare and test the ocean-sounds feed
Choose a recording and visual you can legally broadcast
Use an ocean recording you made yourself or one whose license expressly covers livestreaming. Check that the terms also cover the territories where you expect to be heard, monetization if you intend to monetize, and any replay or local archive you plan to keep. The rights and Content ID status of a particular recording cannot be inferred from the fact that it is available online.

If the recording is licensed third-party material, ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the owner has not allowlisted the channel.
Build the feed in your encoder
Prepare an encoder feed containing the audio and a visual—such as a still image or ocean video—that you are entitled to use. YouTube’s materials support encoder streaming and list OBS as an encoder that can use HLS ingestion, but they do not provide Mac-specific OBS instructions for making a local audio file or image loop. The exact scene and looping controls therefore depend on your OBS version and source setup; verify that the audio continues and the visual behaves as intended in a test before scheduling a long broadcast.
Connect the encoder to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or manage an encoder stream for the broadcast.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Select the ingestion protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. HLS is another option; YouTube lists OBS among encoders that can use YouTube HLS ingestion. For HLS, select the HLS protocol in the Live Control Room and follow YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements.
- Start the encoder, then check the preview. YouTube’s encoder workflow calls for starting the encoder and using the Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm the sound is audible, the visual is correct, and the stream health messages do not show a problem before you begin the public broadcast.

A static ambient broadcast does not usually depend on ultra-low latency, so the extra HLS latency may be an acceptable trade-off if your workflow needs HLS. That is a practical judgment, not a YouTube requirement.

Choose a resolution and sustainable bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance recommends the following H.264 bitrates for these two frame-rate and resolution combinations:

| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | More visual detail, but requires more sustained upload capacity. |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | Lower upload demand; may be sufficient when the source visual is simple. |
These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of your Mac mini or connection. A mostly still scene may make 720p a reasonable bandwidth trade-off, but judge the result using your actual source material and a test stream. Run a speed test, leave capacity beyond the encoder’s target bitrate for normal network variation, and verify stream health during preflight. YouTube’s guidance also recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream-health messages while it runs.
Go live and monitor the broadcast
- Check the Live Control Room preview before making the stream public.
- Confirm the event is accessible from your channel and watch pages, and check it on a mobile device.
- Listen for clean, continuous audio and inspect the picture for freezes or unintended changes.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and verify the local recording file is growing if you are recording a backup.
- Keep the Mac mini, encoder and network connection available for the duration. The official guidance does not promise automatic encoder restart after an outage or uninterrupted 24/7 operation from a particular Mac mini.
A UPS may help protect against a brief power interruption, but no particular UPS is required by YouTube’s encoder guidance. It does not protect against an internet outage or an encoder failure.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Do not count on YouTube to archive a stream that runs continuously for a full day. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams over 12 hours.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies such material, it may replace the live video with a placeholder and warn you to stop using it; if the material remains, the broadcast can be interrupted or terminated. A copyright strike can also end a stream.

- Use audio you created or have permission to livestream.
- Read the license for livestreaming, relevant territories, monetization where applicable, and archived copies.
- For licensed third-party audio, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel in Content ID before launch.
- Keep proof of the license and the rights holder’s allowlist confirmation with your stream records.
Permission to use a recording and Content ID treatment are related but distinct: a license alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
Troubleshooting common problems
