Yes: FFmpeg can send a continuous drum and bass broadcast to YouTube Live, provided you supply a repeating, rights-cleared audio source and a video stream, then keep FFmpeg running under supervision. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval; plan the broadcast and its archive as separate concerns, because YouTube says only streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
What you need before going live
A continuous source and a video stream
Prepare audio you have the necessary rights to broadcast, plus video. YouTube Live expects an audio and video stream for this setup, so a radio channel still needs a visual: for example, artwork or an animated visualizer. If you use a static image, test it with your audio in Live Control Room before announcing the channel.

A machine and a reliable connection
FFmpeg must remain running and keep a stable connection to YouTube. You can use a computer you control or a rented host, but the right machine depends on what FFmpeg must encode: a static image and audio are less demanding than real-time video effects or higher-resolution moving visuals. Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the encoder you intend to use. No particular host, computer specification, or hosting price is established here.
Rights for the music and visuals
Clear the rights for each recording, composition, and visual asset before broadcasting. Check YouTube’s current music, copyright, and monetization rules for your channel’s location and use case. Do not assume that buying a track, having permission to play it in a venue, or using a DJ mix automatically grants the rights needed for a YouTube livestream. No rights status for any drum and bass label, recording, or mix is established here.

Create the YouTube Live stream
Enable live streaming and set up the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room. If this is your first livestream, complete YouTube’s live-stream enablement process first; it may take time before streaming is available.
- Create or schedule a stream and choose its intended visibility. A scheduled broadcast lets you build a watch page and can give viewers a way to receive reminders.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository, or unprotected log.
- Use the RTMPS ingest URL shown in Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its Live API guide specifies port 443 for the RTMPS ingest URL.
For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room before selecting Go Live. For a workflow where starting the encoder takes the stream live, confirm the visibility and watch page first.
Choose FFmpeg settings YouTube can receive
Use a specific codec, resolution, and frame rate
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, at up to 60 fps. Its recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every output. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Those are distinct entries in YouTube’s table, not universal settings for other codecs or frame rates. Check the current full table for your chosen format.

- Smart Fader Does the Beatmatching: Automatically matches volume, BPM, and bass as you move the crossfader, even across genres
- Start With the Music You Have: Mix from Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and more through compatible apps like rekordbox and djay
- Grab It and Go: AlphaTheta's lightest, most compact controller runs on USB-C bus power from a phone, tablet, or PC/Mac
- Play Your Way: Play through your phone or laptop's own speaker, connect external speakers via the 3.5 mm output, or cue on headphones
Set rate control, keyframes, and audio
- Rate control: use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, two seconds corresponds to 60 frames.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its advanced stereo guidance recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Test the actual output: verify that Live Control Room receives both audio and video and reports healthy stream status.
The command below is an illustrative Linux/macOS shell template for one audio file and one image, not a tested command or a guarantee that your local FFmpeg build has the required encoder. It re-encodes the audio and image as 1080p30 H.264 plus stereo AAC. Replace the placeholders with values from your own setup; the video bitrate follows YouTube’s H.264 1080p30 recommendation above.

This example loops a single input file. For a station playlist, prepare and test a playlist-based input separately; confirm that transitions, audio levels, and any gaps behave as intended. A stream-copy workflow can avoid re-encoding only when the source already matches the chosen ingest requirements. If you add a visualizer or moving video, test its frame rate, resolution, and encoding load rather than assuming the static-image settings still apply.

Protect the key and validate before launch
The example uses environment variables to avoid writing the key directly into the command text, but that does not make the key safe if your shell history, environment, or logs are exposed. Restrict access to wherever you store it, and avoid printing the full output URL. Run a private or unlisted test with representative music and moving visuals, check the YouTube preview and stream-health status, and only then promote the stream to its intended audience. YouTube’s encoder help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Keep FFmpeg running and recover from failures
Use a supervisor, logs, and alerts
Starting FFmpeg in an interactive terminal is not an operating plan for a 24/7 station. On a machine you control, configure the operating system’s service manager or another process supervisor to start FFmpeg at boot, restart it after a process exit, retain logs, and notify you when it restarts. Store credentials in a restricted configuration file or secret store rather than in a shared script.

Test both a deliberate process exit and a network interruption before relying on the station. FFmpeg has reconnect options for particular protocols, and its documentation describes a TCP keepalive setting for RTMP; option names and behavior depend on the protocol and FFmpeg version. These options do not replace process supervision or prove that YouTube resumed receiving a valid broadcast.

Check YouTube’s receiver-side health too
An FFmpeg process can remain alive while sending media YouTube cannot use. Monitor Live Control Room and, if you automate monitoring, YouTube’s Live API stream status and health status. Documented issue types include low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. Treat process status and YouTube’s stream health as separate checks.

Can a YouTube radio stream run 24/7?
Broadcast duration and archive duration are different
YouTube’s Live API documentation explicitly describes a 24/7 live-feed model. That establishes that a continuous broadcast is contemplated; it does not mean every broadcast workflow will behave identically for viewers or archives.
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is the stated automatic-archive behavior for streams under 12 hours, not a promise that a single 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete video or divided into daily recordings.
Choose a broadcast model and test its results
Decide whether your station should run one ongoing broadcast, use scheduled successive broadcasts, or manage broadcasts through the API. Test the exact workflow you plan to use: what viewers see when a broadcast changes, how the watch page behaves, and which recordings appear afterward. If complete archives matter, design around the under-12-hour guidance and verify the result with your own broadcast workflow rather than relying on an assumed automatic split.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
FFmpeg exits immediately
- Likely cause: a bad file path, unsupported input, or an FFmpeg build without the selected encoder.
- Check: confirm the input paths and inspect FFmpeg’s error output; verify that your build includes
libx264if using the example. - Fix: correct the path or use an encoder available in your build, then test again before connecting a public broadcast.
YouTube receives video but no audio
- Likely cause: the input has no audio stream, or the output mapping is wrong.
- Check: confirm the selected input contains audio and that Live Control Room reports audio reception.
- Fix: adjust the input or mapping so the output includes an audio stream; test the final output, not just the source file.
YouTube reports low bitrate or frame-rate mismatch
- Likely cause: the encoder is not maintaining the configured output or the selected bitrate does not match the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check: compare actual stream-health warnings with the settings you chose and consult YouTube’s current encoder table for that exact format.
- Fix: correct the output frame rate or bitrate and run another test stream.
The stream stops after a network interruption
- Likely cause: FFmpeg lost its connection or exited, and no supervisor restarted it; reconnect behavior may also be protocol-specific.
- Check: inspect FFmpeg and service logs, then check YouTube’s receiver-side health and broadcast status.
- Fix: configure and test process supervision, alerts, and any applicable protocol reconnect behavior. Do not assume that a surviving FFmpeg process means YouTube has resumed receiving a healthy stream.
The livestream works, but there is no complete 24-hour archive
- Likely cause: the broadcast exceeds YouTube’s stated automatic-archive duration.
- Check: review the broadcast and resulting recordings in Studio.
- Fix: test a planned successive-broadcast or segmented workflow if archives are required; do not count on an automatic daily split.
