You can run a 24/7 sleep-sounds livestream on YouTube from a laptop by looping a local audio-and-visual file in OBS, sending it through YouTube’s Live Control Room, and keeping the laptop, power and internet connection running. First verify that your channel is eligible, clear the rights to every sound and image, and test the exact content and settings before going public. A laptop setup is inexpensive and gives you direct control, but its ability to stay online continuously depends on your device and home conditions.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s eligibility guidance is at Get started with live streaming.
- OBS Studio, a sleep-sounds audio file, and a still image or video to show while the sound plays.
- Permission to use both the audio recording and visuals in a live transmission and, if enabled, the archived replay.
- A stable upload connection and a laptop with dependable power and adequate ventilation for extended operation. No cited official guidance establishes a universal safe laptop temperature, continuous-operation rating, or UPS size for this use.
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, which is the laptop workflow described here. In the YouTube Live Control Room, choose the encoder option and use its stream destination and stream key in OBS. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to stream to your channel.
Choose and prepare the loop
One file or a playlist
For the simplest setup, put the complete sound-and-visual loop into one local media file. In OBS, add a Media Source and enable its loop option. OBS documents formats including MP3, AAC, MP4 and WebM; see OBS Media Sources (documentation dated 2022-01-11). If you want several clips in sequence, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists and has loop-playlist enabled by default. VLC must be installed for that source type.
Local files avoid relying on a streaming website or remote playlist during the broadcast. Check that the file actually repeats without an unintended gap, silence, abrupt cut or visible transition you do not want viewers to see.

Use material you have rights to stream
Clear rights for the sound recording and every visual element, including for the live transmission and any video-on-demand archive. India’s Copyright Act defines sound recordings and communication to the public; the Copyright Office describes exceptions as limited, not as a general licence for commercially released music or ambience. A “royalty-free” label alone does not establish permission for livestreaming, monetization, every territory or an archived replay. Read the specific licence terms. Set up OBS and YouTube
- Confirm live access. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction from the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility.
- Create the stream in Live Control Room. Choose encoder streaming and copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service, and enter or connect the stream key. Do not share it publicly.
- Add your media. In the scene, add a Media Source for one looping local file, or a VLC Video source for a playlist. Confirm the source is visible and that its audio meter moves during playback. Set the source to loop, or verify the playlist’s loop behavior.
- Choose stable output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). For H.264 at 720p30, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 3 Mbps. These are platform encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular household connection can sustain the stream. - Match quality to the connection and content. For a largely static sleep-sounds scene, 720p30 may be sufficient; choose higher resolution only if the visual benefit justifies the additional sustained upload capacity. Measure your upload bitrate under realistic conditions. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the connection’s best-case speed; there is no universal household upload-speed figure that guarantees reliability.
- Start an unlisted test. Start streaming in OBS, check the Live Control Room preview, and listen for the intended sound. Make sure the image or video moves as expected, the audio is neither silent nor clipped, and the stream health shows no warnings before switching to a public broadcast.
Keep the laptop stream running
For a laptop-run broadcast, OBS must remain open and streaming; the laptop cannot be shut down or allowed to sleep. Use reliable power, prevent automatic sleep while plugged in, keep vents unobstructed, and check the laptop maker’s guidance for sustained use. A wired Ethernet connection is often a practical way to avoid local Wi-Fi variability when a cable is available, but neither wired networking nor any particular home connection type is an official YouTube requirement.

Watch the stream health and messages while live, as YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend continuous quality monitoring. If you record a local archive in OBS, confirm disk space and recording status separately; streaming successfully does not by itself confirm a local recording is being saved.
Do not treat government webcast specifications as household YouTube requirements. The National Informatics Centre lists 2–4 Mbps per stream for its agency webcast service context (NIC Webcast Services); that figure should not be transferred to a home YouTube setup. Power interruptions, internet stability, heat and a specific laptop’s continuous-operation limits depend on local conditions and the device. The cited official sources do not establish a universal laptop endurance rating or UPS specification for India.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction occurred in the preceding 90 days. Resolve the account issue before preparing a long-running broadcast.
- OBS connects, but the preview is black: Confirm the scene contains the intended media source, the file path is valid, and playback has started. For a VLC Video source, ensure VLC is installed and the playlist points to accessible files.
- The stream has no sound: Check that the media file includes audio, playback is active, and the source’s audio meter moves in OBS. Check mute controls and the YouTube preview before going public.
- The loop stops or leaves a gap: Verify the Media Source loop setting or VLC playlist loop behavior, then replay the full sequence locally and in an unlisted test. Confirm the files remain available at the paths configured in OBS.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Compare the configured bitrate with measured, sustained upload capacity. Reduce output bitrate or resolution and test again; a speed-test peak is not evidence of stable capacity for an uninterrupted broadcast.
- The broadcast stops after a power or connection interruption: Check the laptop’s power and network, then inspect OBS and the Live Control Room to confirm whether the encoder and event are still connected. Local laptop streaming depends on the home setup remaining operational.
- A claim or restriction appears on the stream or archive: Review the licence for each sound and visual asset, including live and archived use. Replace or remove material whose permissions do not cover the intended use; do not assume a “royalty-free” description settles the issue.
