You can run a continuous Rajasthani folk music stream from a laptop with an encoder such as OBS, a verified YouTube channel, a stable upload connection and music rights for every recording. Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
YouTube lists OBS as an encoder option and describes it as open-source software available at no charge. The exact menu wording can vary by OBS version, but the essential setup is to create a stream in YouTube Studio, then enter its stream URL and key in the encoder.
- Install an encoder. Download and install OBS on the laptop. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how encoder software sends a broadcast to the platform.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, enter the Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If you configure a custom server, use the stream URL and key supplied by YouTube. YouTube recommends the secure RTMPS ingest protocol; use it when available in the encoder’s service or server settings.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS before the next broadcast.
- Build the broadcast scene. Add the visual you intend viewers to see, such as a still image or a prepared video, and add the audio source for your music. Confirm the sources are active and that the sound is audible without clipping. Do not assume that a static image or a traditional song makes the music rights-free.
Choose a sustainable video and network configuration
Resolution and bitrate
Choose an output that the laptop can encode reliably and the connection can upload continuously. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends an H.264 bitrate of 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. That is a platform configuration recommendation, not a guarantee of picture quality or a requirement for every setup. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table for the target resolution and frame rate before configuring OBS. Avoid selecting a higher output merely because the laptop can produce it; the upload connection must sustain the chosen bitrate, and a long stream magnifies the cost of instability.

Upload headroom and connection
YouTube recommends having 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Other people or devices using the same network can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream, and connection disruption can damage the broadcast. Test the actual connection you will use, preferably at the time and location of the planned stream, and keep other heavy uploads or downloads off the network. A wired connection may help avoid Wi-Fi interruptions; if the laptop lacks an Ethernet jack, check its ports and operating-system compatibility before buying an adapter. Test, go live and monitor the broadcast
- Test the whole setup first. Preview the stream in YouTube Studio and test representative music and visuals before the public launch. Use the same laptop, encoder settings and network you expect to use continuously.
- Check audio and video together. Confirm that the music is clear, the levels are not clipping, the picture is present and the live preview shows no connection or encoding warning.
- Start the encoder and confirm the stream in YouTube. Once OBS is sending data, verify that YouTube receives the feed and that the intended stream is live. Follow the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators rather than assuming that an active OBS session means viewers can see and hear a healthy broadcast.
- Keep the laptop operating. Prevent sleep or hibernation while the stream is running, keep it connected to power and internet, and monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health. A laptop-based setup is not unattended in the same way as a hosted service: a power, network, software or operating-system interruption can stop the feed.
Plan for 24/7 continuity and replay archives
A live broadcast and its replay are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining a replay matters, record locally and confirm that the laptop has enough storage for the recording. Do not rely on a single uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours to create a complete YouTube archive.

For a continuous schedule, plan how you will handle stream boundaries: prepare an orderly handoff or restart before the stream passes the 12-hour mark, and check that the next broadcast starts correctly. A restart creates a new live session rather than one uninterrupted broadcast, so it can affect how viewers encounter the stream. Keep local recordings if you need an independent copy; recording also requires storage and adds work for the laptop.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: verify the channel, check for an active live-stream restriction from the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- The Live Control Room does not receive the encoder: check that OBS has the current stream key and the correct stream URL or YouTube service selection. Replace an exposed or outdated key in YouTube Studio, then update the encoder.
- The stream buffers or stream health degrades: reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the actual connection can sustain, restore the recommended upload headroom, and check whether other devices are consuming bandwidth. YouTube warns that shared network constraints and connection disruption can affect streaming.
- Audio is missing, distorted or too loud: inspect the selected OBS audio source, confirm its meter responds during playback, and listen to a private or test preview before relaunching. Adjust levels to avoid clipping.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: stop using the disputed material until you have verified the rights and, where required, arranged a Content ID allowlist with the rightsholder. A genre label or license alone does not guarantee that YouTube’s live scan will not interrupt the stream.
- The YouTube replay is missing or incomplete: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be archived. Use a local recording for preservation and schedule shorter live sessions if an automatic YouTube archive is important.
